WWE Unforgiven 2004

Expecting something else? That’ll come up next week. In the meantime, enjoy this musings on a “classic” WWE PPV event from 2004.

On August 15th, 2004 – the night of Summerslam – Randy Orton defeated reigning World Heavyweight Champion Chris Benoit to win his first World title at the ripe young age of 24. The next night on RAW, Orton successfully defended the title against Benoit and was soon swarmed by his stablemates in Evolution, with HHH giving his young protege the thumbs up… before giving him the thumbs down and booting young Randy out of the group. This, along with a series of bits designed to make Randy the beloved hero by having him run away a lot, would lead to McSon-In-Law getting a title shot and subsequently beating Randy for the title; please pretend you’re shocked at this development.

The burial had begun.

Fun fact: I have not seen this show back in the day and if my revisits to the olden days of 2002-2003 a few years back are any indication, I’m going to be in for a rough ride with this one. Anyway, let’s get this out of the way and then next week, we can go back to finishing off the last couple WWF ’99 PPVs for the next couple weeks before we hit Double Or Nothing.

Flash Fiction #27 – Sunday

I’m going to indulge myself with a slightly longer edition of these quick stories. Apparently, a story that is written in less than 1,000 words is the absolute maximum word count of what one would qualify as “flash fiction” fare. So this is going to be a slightly meatier endeavor, but it’s a good one.

WWE Moves Money In The Bank B-Show From Stadium To Small Arena

Source: https://www.f4wonline.com/news/wwe/wwe-moving-money-in-the-bank-to-smaller-venue-las-vegas

Due to poor ticket sales a perceived bomb threat from would-be international incidental parties, WWE has opted to move their Money In The Bank B-Show from the larger Reliant Stadium to the much smaller MGM Grand Arena. Best wishes to all the talent who were threatened by this potential terrorist act.
Or maybe save the stadiums for the big shows and not your throwaway gimmick show… and yes, I’m calling Money In The Bank a throwaway gimmick show.
I wonder if they’ll blame Cody for this somehow…

AEW Dynamite (May 25th, 2022): Going Home On The Go-Home Show

Well, it’s the go-home show for Double Or Nothing, which means the last push before the big PPV event this coming weekend. It’s also going to be the last AEW Dynamite musings for a good while. I’ll keep watching the show on and off, but I think I’m going to give these things a rest for a couple months and pick it up later down the road.
That said, this was a fine show.
Wardlow killed the Ten Guy in a steel cage after a chairshot from Ten Guy killed special ref MJF, which prompted a regular ref to make the winning pinfall count. This is followed by a pretty solid Hangman/Punk promo segment hosted by Tony Schiavone, who is more than happy to stir up shit between these two, leading to Hangman knocking Punk on his ass… the intrigue in this World title feud is enticing, unlike anything involving Roman these days.
Jon Moxley and Eddie Kingston beat up a bunch of dudes and then they brawl with Jericho’s crew. This is followed by a ROH Tag Title match between defending champs FTR and Roppogi Vice ending in an actual, honest-to-God DISQUALIFICATION FINISH on an All Elite Wrestling television program caused by a couple New Japan guys whose names I don’t recall beating on both teams… I guess we gotta start building towards that PPV while we’re at it.
Thunder Rosa cuts a promo hyping her title defense against Serena Deeb… it’s fine. Britt Baker advances to the finals of the Owen tournament by beating Toni Storm… and Samoa Joe defeated Kyle O’Reilly to advance to the finals against Adam Cole or someone… and part of me has this funny feeling that the tournament is going to be won by Cole and Britt because they’re doing the lovin’ or something. I hope I’m wrong on that count because… eh…
On a whole, a perfectly fine go-home show for Double Or Nothing and a good note to bow out on this journey for now. See you all next Wednesday… or earlier if you like the other shit I post here every so often.

AEW Revolution 2022

You know… it just occurred to me that I have yet to comment on the AEW Revolution PPV that took place back in March. So let’s rectify that because I need a primer before I jump into Double Or Nothing this weekend, which is looking to be a banger of a PPV.
So did this, by the way. And no, there was no exploding bomb in this one. Then again, there wasn’t one in the last show, but at least they didn’t advertise it this time around.
