In Case You Need A Reminder… (Like I Do, Apparently)

So there was a supercard on Netflix. You may have heard of it. You might have even seen it… but I sure as hell didn’t because I don’t have a Netflix subscription and I don’t care enough about this show to get one.

Okay, kids. It’s time to break the kayfabe and explain how this thing works.

Both this and yesterday’s post (which also features that lovely image of Cold Ronda getting a cold dose of reality) were written back in February, when this thing was first announced. I did express some quick thoughts on the announcement (which you can read here) and then prepped these two posts because I figured… why not have a little fun with this? So as much as I would like to feed the notion that I’m obsessing over this thing despite supposedly not caring about, the truth of the matter is that this was written ahead of time and then promptly forgotten about.

That last line isn’t figurative; there’d be instances where posts would published before they were finished because I told myself that I’d get back to it later and later would turn out to be after the fact.

So yes, I more than likely didn’t watch the show. More than likely, I forgot the show was a thing. If anything, I’m probably watching some hockey games during this time for a lark. Not a sports guy in general, but I do enjoy some good, fun playoffs hockey, especially if it involves the home team.

Oh well…

In Case Anyone Cares… (Which I Don’t)

Just a reminder, tonight is the long awaited return of Cold Ronda Rousey to the MMA return to fight the long awaited returning Gina Carano brought to you by Netflix. If you wanna watch it, go for it. If not, that’s cool, too…

I’ll be in the latter category.

New Wily Challenge later today… I think.

Rondarano

In case you missed the news – either because you don’t follow combat sports news or you just had better things to do; both are valid – Netflix is going to air the return of two female legends in the MMA circle this coming may. Yes, Cold Ronda returns to something resembling an octagon but not really because it’s not a UFC thing to fight other legendary MMA person Gina Carano, who no doubt is looking forward to punching things after her truffles with the Disney Corporation.

It goes without saying that I care very little about the happenings of MMA. I care even less so about the happenings of Cold Ronda unless she’s eating some semblance of humble pie. But to say that something like this isn’t a big deal is ludicrous. Whatever your thoughts on the individuals involved, these are two pioneering women that brought the female portion of the combat sports equation up to a higher level and this is the first time both are stepping into the arena to face each other in what looks to be familiar MMA trappings.

Hey, good for Ronda giving Gina another payday since apparently, this whole deal was her idea. Is it something I’d be interested in watching? Not really, but for you MMA fans out there, I’m sure that’s something to look forward to down the road… and if not, there’s always that UFC show from the White House… which I also will not be watching.

What do you want? I was never an MMA fan. Not about to start now. But any excuse I can use to pull out Ronda’s KO’ed mug and plaster it on a post… I will take it… so you know who I’m rooting for, if nothing else.

WWE Evolution 2025

Yes, we’re doing the PPV musings early this week. Also, this is the last one for a while, as next Wednesday will begin my weekly visit to the first year of WCW Monday Nitro, which turns 30 next week. Hopefully, this run lasts longer than the NWA-TNA run did.

In any event, the people have wanted it and after almost a decade, WWE has delivered another all-women PPV event because we have an AEW megashow to counterprogram and we’re going to do that by swamping the weekend with all sorts of mediocre programming. Starting off with a run of the mill NXT show that featured a Slammiversary contract signing and nothing else of note unless you’re a regular NXT viewer – and I’m not – and then following that up with the latest Saturday Night’s Main Event, which featured GOLDBERG coming out of retirement to lose in his retirement match against GUNTHER and then getting cut off in the middle of his retirement speech.

And then there’s this show… which I’m only watching because I am genuinely curious to find out if there was any match that could match or surpass the superb All In match between Timeless Toni and Mercedes. This show that WWE pulled out of their ass purely for the sake of counter-programming AEW. I mean, let’s call a spade a spade. The only reason there was an Evolution PPV in the first place was to give the women something to do because they couldn’t wrestle in Saudi Arabia. Once that started to lighten up, there was no need for another Evolution… that and there was no Cold Ronda to build this show around.

So was there anything on this show that surpassed the All In match that I mentioned? The short answer is “maybe.” The long answer is the rest of this post.

Lots Of Choices, Only Time For One…

This weekend looks to be a pretty packed weekend of wrestling action for those who care for such things.

The big event that seems to be taking place is the AEW All In show from Texas; a show that happens to be in Texas because ol’ TK couldn’t book Wembley for a third year in a row, so he had to take it elsewhere. Probably a good thing when you claim to draw 80,000+ at your first show and then come back to diminishing returns year after year.

Obviously, you have the main event of Hangman Page vs. Jon Moxley for the AEW World title and hopefully, there will be a title change. There’s also another Kenny vs. Okada match that will have absurdly high expectations with no chance of those ever being met (Kenny due to his recent diverticulitus episode and Okada due to phoning it in for easy money… can’t say that I blame him), a Toni Storm/Mercedes match for the women’s title, and some other stuff as well.

But then there’s also Saturday Night’s Main Event, where they claim to feature Goldberg’s last match ever, but then they make it a World title match against GUNTHER and there’s already concern from some folks that they might actually pull the trigger on a Goldberg World title run. There’s also Drew vs. Randy and a couple othe matches.

But then there’s also that all-women’s Evolution show that they finally got around to booking another one because they realized that they didn’t need Cold Ronda to headline this thing and they could do another one of these with the women they have on the roster. I don’t know any of the matches booked, but I’m sure people will appreciate its return.

So, yes, lots of wrestling action this weekend, but I’ve only got time for one show this weekend and I think we all know which show that’s going to be…

It’s the one with the  dog.

Oh yeah, Krypto The Super-Dog Also Featuring Superman opens in theaters this weekend… nothing else really matters.

Cold Ronda’s Writing A Comic… No Thanks.

Source: https://www.wrestleview.com/wwe-news/319519-ronda-rousey-announces-new-graphic-novel-project-expecting-the-unexpected/

Former UFC and WWE Diva Ronda Rousey announced that she’s doing a graphic novel about a hired gun who pretends to be knocked up, only to eventually be knocked up and pregnant. And of course, said hired gun is modeled after Ronda herself, because of course it is.

While I’m sure that this is going to be on par with the Kevin Nash comic book from ages ago, I have no interest in giving this comic a look. Anything that actually involved giving Cold Ronda any of my money so she can start talking shit about people who thinks she sucks and use the “if it were a guy, you wouldn’t say it sucked” argument… which doesn’t work here because I compared her would-be project to the Nash comic, which was also wildly imaginative and shit… and that’s being generous.

Best of luck to her on the project, hope it works out for her, but… no buys for me. Sorry.

WWE Money In The Bank 2018

Yes, I decided to watch a WWE Pay-Per-View event from 2018 over either the latest Double Or Nothing show or WWE’s latest Blood Money venture from the progressive kingdom of Saudi. Truth be told, I almost bit on the DoN replay until I heard it was eleventy-billion hours long… yeah, no thanks. I don’t need to spend three months watching one show.

For what it’s worth, this is probably the only show that I hadn’t seen back in the day… though to be fair, this show was following Backlash, a show that was memorable for the Roman Reigns/Samoa Joe main event that was so thrilling that people were walking out before Roman even got a win. Also, if my old musings on the show are anything to go by, the show itself was pretty dreadful.

So to close out this month before beginning my June-wide wrestling moratorium, I decided to revisit this show for some reason and… you know, some time has passed and one has to wonder if this show is going to be any better now than if I were to have watched it live. I guess we’ll have to see about that.

Ramblemania Rewind 39 – WWE Wrestlemania 39 (2023)

Date: April 1–2, 2023
Venue: SoFi Stadium – Inglewood, California
Attendance:
Night 1: 67,303
Night 2: 67,553
Combined: 134,856

Yes, we’re back on this show again… and you know what that means?

I’ve written about my thoughts regarding this show last year and watching a year later – even taking into account everything that has happened since then – my thoughts more or less remain consistent. So the good majority of this Ramblemania Rewind is going to read like something of a repost, save for minor tenses and things of that nature.

Wrestlemania 39 took place last weekend; two nights of Wrestlemania, with one night easily considered to be one of the best Wrestlemania cards ever put together and the other night… well, you know.

This was the first time that I was actively looking forward to a Wrestlemania. Hell, it was the first time that I was actively invested in a major WWE storyline without all of the usual trappings that would be associated with. I was actually enjoying the ride that they were taking me on for the first time in a long, LONG while. I was actually intrigued by how things were going to turn out. And Wrestlemania turned out to be a tale of two shows. One show living up to the hype and delivering the pay-off to one of the most engaging storylines in years and the other… well, you know the old saying about the more things change…

The funny thing is that at the end of night one, I could safely that I had a good time. I will go so far to say that night one was one of the best Wrestlemania cards put together on PPV and it all came together thanks to all the superstars who made it happen. The way I saw it, Night One went down exactly as it should and everything played out exactly as it needed to. It was a good feeling.

But as the good feeling started to fall away, there was a dark thought came to mind. A thought that was fleeting and yet that fleeting moment was enough to cast doubt on the second night. It was the thought that if Night One is where everything would go right, then Night Two is where everything would come crumbling down.

Sure enough…

Okay, let’s get this over with.

Ramblemania Rewind 38 – WWE Wrestlemania 38 (2022)

Date: April 2–3, 2022
Venue: AT&T Stadium – Arlington, Texas
Attendance
Night 1: 65,719
Night 2: 65,653
Combined: 131,372

A lesson to be learned: just because you call something stupendous doesn’t necessarily make it so.

Yes, I used that opening line in the original Ramblemania post. Yes, it’s still valid.

Anyway, this is Wrestlemania 38. Another two-night affair that I recall taking me several days to get through because it was so damned long. The good news is that I was able to watch this show in two nights, meaning I sat through each night without interruption. Unfortunately, each night of Wrestlemania 38 were witnessed days apart and if I’m going to be honest, that was the only way that I would even consider giving this thing a shot. My main complaint with this show was that it was too damned long – each night was roughly four hours a night and a lot of these shows felt considerably bloated.

What helped this time around was a lot of fast forwarding, skipping through the non-wrestling bits and extraneous commercials. Even with a wonky Network interface, this helped in making these shows more tolerable than usual.
