Yeah… Here We Go Again…

I know that I said I wouldn’t touch on this anymore until something concrete comes out of the whole Doctor Who tendering business, but sometimes, I can’t help but ask questions that I know I’ll never get answers to… but gosh darn it, I’m going to give it a shot here.

Why can’t Marble Mouth Davies shut the fuck up? Why does he continue to insist that he did a good job on his second tenure on the series and regrets nothing? Why does he continue to court controversy among the fanbase who rightfully criticized his flaky body of work in these past two years and dismiss them as “hate-filled” or “toxic?” Why does he continue to deflect any and all blame for the franchise being in this situation in the first place?

Okay, so you take umbrage in the fact that people claim Doctor Who has been cancelled when, in fact, it’s on tender. Okay, fine. Technically speaking, you are correct. Doctor Who is not cancelled. You did not plunge the franchise to its lowest lows and there will, in fact, be a Christmas special later this year that you will indeed produce to resolve your stupid little cliffhanger that you apparently didn’t have a script for… which, again, runs contrary to claims made in the past.

So for you to get any semblance of free pass here, the tender process would have to be quick, a suitor would be found to foot the bill and begin production, and then the Christmas special will be back on schedule, right?

Right?

Look, I’ve said my piece on this whole tender business last month and I’m not going to repeat myself here. I will also clarify that, yes, there is no Christmas special this year, but the BBC is looking to find someone – anyone – who is willing to pick up the pieces left behind by Marble Mouth over there and bring forth the next glorious age of Doctor Who. I will also remind people that this process can (and possibly will) take years and anyone who thinks that everything will be up and about by next year can take a long walk off the deep end.

Reality is that Doctor Who is off the air. It’s going to be off the air indefinitely. It’s going to be a good, long while until we see that blue box on new adventures. And yes, it’s probably a good thing that there’s going to be a long pause… but the reality is that we wouldn’t be in this situation of getting a pause if this latest relaunch had been a success, but it hasn’t and here we are. And people can point to “woke this” or “DEI that” or whatever the case may be. But sometimes, the simplest explanation worked best.

The show failed because THE SHOW SUCKED.

End of story.

There’s something to be said about letting people think you the fool and then opening your mouth to remove all doubt. RTD ought to take that lesson to heart. Every time he speaks on the matter, it becomes even more pathetic.

NOW… I can retire that banner in peace.

Hopefully, next time we talk about Doctor Who ’round these parts, it’ll be something positive for once. I’m tired of writing about bad news. Maybe I should take Stephen Moffat’s advice and watch the old stuff again. There’s plenty to go around.

Later.

Christmas Special Axed, Doctor Who Put On Competitive Tender

Source: https://www.doctorwhotv.co.uk/doctor-who-christmas-axed-107069.htm

So after what seemed like an eternity, BBC has confirmed that Doctor Who’s Christmas Special has been officially cancelled and that the series will be put on competitive tender, which basically means the show is on indefinite hiatus until somebody comes up with the money to pick up the slack. As such, this effectively means that Russell T. Davies’ Bad Wolf production studios will NOT be continuing the series further.

How ironic that the man who was responsible for Doctor Who’s return after a long hiatus would also be the one to kill it… or at the very least, seriously damage it.

Is She Or Isn’t She?

A while back, while gathering emails and questions for a previous edition of the DTM Mailbag, someone had inquired about my thoughts on the whole Doctor Boo/Billie Piper conundrum that the BBC placed themselves in. I thought about giving a quick answer before moving on, but as I was conducting my answer, I found out that I actually had some thoughts that expanded beyond the brief period I would dedicate. Eventually, I found myself compelled (for whatever reason) to turn this answer into a more detailed write up and offer some thoughts on the matter.

I wanted to hold this off until the end of the month so that I’d have something to post during that last week, but apparently, Marble Mouth Davies suggests that the BBC might be putting some sort of word regarding the future of who at some point next week or so. So I’m going to share some quick thoughts – based almost purely on speculation – and should BBC offer something substantial (or at least remotely forward moving) in terms of their future plans with the proverbial TARDIS, I’ll probably do a follow up. If not, this is my words on the matter, for better or worse.

Marble Mouth Davies Wants Surprises In Doctor Boo!

Source: https://www.doctorwhotv.co.uk/doctor-who-christmas-spoilers-rtd-106956.htm

“Wouldn’t it be great if we got to this year’s Doctor Who Christmas Special and nothing had been spoiled and everything was new? Why do we do it any other way?” says current Doctor Who showrunner Russell T. “Marble Mouth” Davies in explaining why there are no news regarding the upcoming special or anything afterwards. He says this presuming that people want to be surprised by what’s going to happen, but people are just wondering what the fuck is going on with their favorite sci-fi show of the past 60 years.

Honestly, the question I’d be asking your audience is “Wouldn’t it be great if we got to this year’s Christmas Special and it didn’t suck. Why would we do it any other way?”

But yes, Russell. Keep telling yourself that we want surprises and not good quality Doctor Who stories like you used to be able to conjure up.

Bleeding Cool Should Stop Using That Paul McGann Clip

Why is it that every time Bleeding Cool does an article (or clickbait, whichever you prefer) on Doctor Who, they make a point to include a clip of former Doctor person Paul McGann on a podcast confirming that a series of AI-doctored (no pun intended) pictures featuring him in costume were not real? I get that you want people to know that there are fake photos floating around that aren’t real, but if someone has never seen these fake photos – such as yours truly – this comes across as “We’ve got nothing else to post to make this article look like anything of substance, so we’re just going to repost the same Paul McGann clip that we’ve posted several times over the PAST MONTH ALONE!

Seriously, folks. Stop using that clip every time you talk about Doctor Who. If your regular readership saw it once, they’ve seen it a thousand times. And while I’m not a regular reader, I have seen enough Doctor Who posts on this site that I can safely say that clip is on EVERY DOCTOR WHO POST ON THEIR GODDAMNED SITE THAT I’VE READ.

Enough. Find something else to fill the void. Promote the next Big Finish audio or upcoming comic. Just about anything that Doctor Who isn’t a complete and utter Doctor Boo in at the moment. That’d be nice.

Here. I’ll give you an example.

Doctor Who’s one TV Movie starring Sylvester McCoy and a couple others is being redone in 4K, so it won’t look or sound like shit anymore. How cool is that?

Doctor Who Doesn’t Need To Be Star Wars

Source: https://bleedingcool.com/tv/doctor-who-never-going-to-be-star-wars-is-a-good-thing-mark-gatiss/

Yes, we’re going to continue using the Doctor Boo banner for whenever we need to talk about the current direction of Doctor Boo. If we ever need to touch on vintage Doctor Who, we’ll use something else. But as far as this current flux of Doctor Boo, BOOM! There you go. I ain’t even bothering with Billie Piper. Ncuti deserves some love… and also deserved some better scripts, but that TARDIS has long since flown off… but I digress.

So some time ago, veteran writer of many Doctor Who scripts Mark Gatiss opined his two pence on the failure of the Disney experiment and suggested that maybe Doctor Who doesn’t need to be another Star Wars or Marvel type franchise with its own cinematic universe or other such rubbish. It should just focus on being a good show and embrace its somewhat kitschy nature.

I’ll leave that “kitschy nature” point open for debate, but yes, Doctor Who doesn’t need another Whoniverse or whatever marketing bollocks you want to use. There’s a whole bunch of Big Finish stuff that covers the nuances and how many people actually dig through all those subseries about the companions and side characters that aren’t the Doctor themselves? I don’t need (nor want) to watch eleventy billion side series to enjoy the main show. Just give me one good show with good stories and good characters. And then if that starts to get some wheels, you can think about maybe one (and just ONE) side story here and there.

Whatever happens with Doctor Who next, hopefully it’ll recover from the past few years of the Disney malaise that inflicted it. Go back to being cheap as shit if you have to. As long as the scripts are good.

And fuck off with all the “mavity” bullshit. That was fucking stupid.

BleedingCool’s Assessment Of RTD (also fish sex)

Source: https://bleedingcool.com/tv/doctor-who-russell-t-davies-is-now-the-best-the-worst-showrunner/

An interesting perspective on the second run of Russell T Davies, with comparisons to John Nathan-Turner, the last Doctor Who showrunner of the classic era before the show was put on ice for good. To be quite frank, I’m not sure if that’s a fair comparison. Sure, Nathan-Turner might not have been the most popular producer, but there’s stuff from his era that I thought was pretty good and at the very least, his solution to getting away from the sonic screwdriver (i.e. just get rid of the bloody thing) was a way to make the Doctor more clever and resort to other means to solve problems.

Far be it for me to use this as another excuse to rag on ol’ RTD for his recent shit run, but I made a banner called Doctor Boo and so I might as well make the most of it.

For what it’s worth, though, I got around to seeing some of that War Between Land And Sea before I decided that I got bored and just read the synopsis for the rest of the series. Of course, the whole thing degrades into a love story between a man and a fish girl. That’s all this whole thing was about anyway, wasn’t it? Anything that supposedly touches on an interesting premise eventually devolves into bestiality… er, sorry, I mean interspecies erotica, fucko!

Man, remember when this guy was a genius responsible for reviving Doctor Who and turning it into a sci-fi juggernaut? Those were the days… can we build a TARDIS and bring THAT guy over so he can fix up the mess his future self mucked up? Would be nice.

Doctor Boo And Chef Gordon Debate Fish Custard

Doctor Boo and Chef Gordon debate the culinary value of fish fingers and custard. Obviously not a real thing and the AI thing helped a bit, which should strike fear in the heart of Marble Mouth Davies that ChatGPT can produce a better Doctor Who script than anything out of his return trip.

Anyway, here’s the fun portion…

Sea Devils Serial Gets New Re-Release Despite RTD’s Efforts

Source: https://www.doctorwhotv.co.uk/doctor-who-sea-devils-special-106375.htm

The classic Jon Pertwee-helmed 1972 Doctor Who serial, The Sea Devils, is getting a fresh new special edition edit coming to BBC’s exclusive online streamer gimmick, due in December. Not mentioned in the story is RTD’s attempts to get the special renamed “The Homo Aquas” since he considers the original “Sea Devil” name to be “racist” and actually considers the Doctor to be the villain since he was played by a white dude. The BBC, naturally, told him to fuck off and go back to his silly Christmas special.

The Sea Devils: Special Edition sees release on December 7th.
