DTM Blog Post No. 200

DTM Blog ended 2005 with its 200 post, less than two years old at the time. And yet, here we are with a 2+ year old blog and 600 posts. Amazing what a better blogging interface will do for you.

So yeah, this is it. The 200th post of DTM Blog is conveniently the final post of 2005. And believe me, as much as I want to piss on the past year for all the stupid things I had to put up with, I really can’t. So I won’t. But I’ll just take the time to say thanks to those who have bothered to read this thing. And I hope that you stick around for the next year (or at the very list the next hundred posts), where there’ll be more of me rambling. But then, that’s all the blog has ever really been about, isn’t it?

And so as we kiss 2005 good-bye and send it on a trip to the retirement home, we look back on some of the good, bad, and tweener events that have shaped this great year.

2003 – The Year WWE Went To Shit

2001 was a year of transition for the wrestling business.

It saw the closure of both beloved indy promotion Extreme Championship Wrestling as well as global powerhouse World Championship Wrestling, both of whom would be acquired in some form or fashion by the World Wrestling Federation. It was during this time that the glory years of the WWF Attitude Era had come to an end, with Stone Cold Steve Austin – one of, if not, THE biggest star in wrestling history – turning heel and aligning himself with his arch-nemesis of many years Vince McMahon… and then came the Invasion angle, which should have been a surefire hit if done right and… it wasn’t.

Fast forward to 2002 and due to legal issues, the WWF was forced to rebrand itself as WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment)… something that I’m still trying to get used. Some people would consider Vince jobbing to the Panda people in court as the turning point where things started going to shit… but that’s a bit of a fib because the fall began a bit before that. But the name change is a nice, convenient excuse to separate the good old days of the WWF and the current bad times of the WWE.

2002 saw some hiccups, sure, but the year 2003 seemed poised for big things. There was some stuff to look forward. Stone Cold was making his return to WWE. The door was open for more WCW old timers to show up in WWE and job to McSon-In-Law add some much needed starpower to the brand split. And they’ve got a new young face in Brock Lesnar that could very well be that next big thing that Paul Heyman likes to tout him as being (before he turned on Brock and went with FUCKING BIG SHOW of all people.)

And then they shit the bed.

The WCW Invasion BLOWS! (a.k.a. The Loser Of 2001)

Happy New Year, everybody. Let’s talk about the WCW Invasion and how much it blows.

Yes, that’s how we starting out this new year is by talking about one of the worst misses in the history of sports entertainment. Hell, I’d be inclined to include the greater professional wrestling industry, but I’m pretty sure you can dig up some worse disasters out of the old territories that fizzled out and died.
