The Winners And Losers Of 2020

So 2020 has been a rather turbulent year of pandemics, human rights nightmares, speaking out on unimaginable horrors, and another round of politicians caring more about their own rep and numbers than the lives of their constituents. Another round of companies throwing generic statements of solidarity for the sake of lip service. Another round of people yelling and opening the doors to riots that have broken down into warzones that were once only the stuff of B-movie action schlock.

Suffice it to say, it’s been one of the more trying years in recent history. We’ve all had our problems – some graver than others – and it would be a great pleasure in leaving this year behind.

And as I try to compile this list and fulfill an annual tradition, a realization dawns on me; this year has been the drizzling shits from top to bottom and not even the brightest spot this year could overcome the mounds of dookey that we’ve been saddled with. I want to spotlight some good stuff on here, but the truth is that the few bright spots are outweighed by the many, many, MANY negatives. No matter how hard I try to make this somewhat amusing for a lark to read, I honestly don’t feel that positive.

So the thought occurred to simply bin it.

I had almost considered not doing this list because… are there any real bright spots in 2020 that are really worth celebrating? I’m sure Americans are happy they no longer have Trump for another four years, but… is that really going to solve anything? Is the guy going in really going to make things better? When the only reason for voting for the other guy is that he’s better than Trump, is that really a good thing? Don’t forget; better doesn’t necessarily mean good. It may very well means less bad. And as I’ve said in the past, whatever happens in America afterwards is on them… but I’ve said more than enough and I’m digressing from the main point.

I didn’t want to do this list because I don’t believe 2020 deserves to be celebrated. Hell, even after compiling this admittedly rushed list, I still don’t think we need to celebrate anything in 2020 and we should just bury it. And for the month of January, with the 100-post challenge – one hundred written pieces throughout the month of January before the return of reviews starting February 1st, kicking off two months worth of daily reviews – but then I realized that the Winners And Losers, the Years In Review lists are something of a historical document; a look back at things that were good, bad, and anything in between worth mentioning.

So here’s the deal; I’ve picked out five winners for 2020 and five losers for 2020. And there’s also a couple middle grounders. In a change of format, each entry (save one or two) will have some length to it and not just a quick blurb.

You’re Getting What You Deserve

No, this is not about the Joker movie. But the header does fit.

Because it’s the truth.

You know… I’m not one to talk politics on this here blog. It’s not a thing I care to comment on and it’s regarding a country that I do not live in. However, in light of the ongoing (as of this writing, at least) counting of the votes that is still ongoing, I feel the need to say this to all my neighbors in the south and I want to emphasize that this is from the bottom of my heart.

You’re getting what you deserve.

I’m not saying this out of malice, because I feel the pain of millions of southern neighbors in anxiety over their uncertain future. The voters who feel their vote to this political process called democracy may or may not be counted. There’s a part of me that feels sorry for the citizens of the nation genuinely concerned about their country’s future, but there’s also a part of me that feels this whole thing is your own damned fault and whatever happens afterwards is of your own doing.

This whole election snafu and the shitstorm that’s going to come afterwards is something that could’ve been prevented had anyone had the foresight to develop a system that would result in a timely and smooth electoral process during a period where such results would be demanded upon. Yes, the world is suffering from prevailing circumstances and we’re developing ways to operate in this pandemic-stricken environment. Don’t you think the means in which you’re determining your next head of state should be one of those things, especially considering the scrutiny and the ballyhoo that is going to be drawn to it?

This is harkening back to Gore vs Bush in 2000, where things turned to shit during that electoral process as well… and then things went to hell for the next eight years. You’d think we would’ve learned something from that, but instead we’re too busy trying to censor history because it might offend someone or hurt their feelings.

To hell with your feelings.

History is not supposed to be pretty. It’s not supposed to be all-inclusive. It is pretty diverse, but not in the way you’d like. You’re not supposed to like history. You’re supposed to learn from it and try to do better than what your predecessors have in the past. And you haven’t done a single thing of it. Hell, none of us have. That’s what so damned frustrating.

Anyone who had a hand in this mess… congratulations, you deserve whatever comes afterwards and the rest of us have to suffer for it by proxy.

Thanks a lot.

Welp… Here We Go Again…

You know… I whipped this banner up a year or so back when an issue of the now-cancelled Go Go Power Rangers comic book teased this image of Lord Drakkon – Boom Studios’ woefully uninspired and hackneyed take on the whole “Evil Tommy” idea that had been the subject matter of most of the wankiest of wankfest fanfiction. My disdain for this worthless character was such that when his presence was teased as such, I ceased giving these people my money and stop reading the comics altogether.

The Winners And Losers Of 2019

So it’s that time of year again, folks. The annual tradition that has been a thing since the old DTM Webstation days back in 2004 and has endured multiple blogs. For those who want the audio version, the latest edition of the DTM-Cast has you covered, but for those who prefer to read these things rather than hear them, I present to you the Winners And Losers Of 2019!

I’m not going to say that this is the hardest list that I’ve ever put together because, to be perfectly frank, there were a lot of easy shoe-ins for both sides of the coins. However, when it came to certain items to itemize, that became a bit more of a struggle and ultimately, the two that I struggled with the most ended up being middle grounders. But the rest of the list was perfectly fine.

Every time there’s a new Terminator movie, the first question I ask is… “Why?”

Let’s Talk Kofi

So I jumped the gun a bit in posting my musings on the utterly horrific Shit In A Cell PPV event a couple days ago, so in lieu of another PPV musings for the week, I’d figure that I would address on the Kofi Kingston losing to Brock Lesnar in 6 seconds… and why I’m actually okay with it.

Yes, that’s right. I did not have a problem with Kofi losing the title in the manner that he did. I did not throw a fit on Twitter acting like the dumb fuck fan that WWE believes they are catering to (besides the sponsors, of course). I did not go on the radio talking about how much of a complete burial of Kofi this turned out to be. I actually didn’t mind the way this match turned out and thought it was an excellent story told.

Legend Of The Cash Grab Dragon – NO BUYS

It’s been a while since I’ve touched on anything related to our old buddy JDF, but I felt somewhat compelled to chime in on this one occasion.

Full disclosure: I am not the biggest fan of Jason David Frank. I’m sure in real life, he is a genuinely nice guy and I have nothing but the utmost respect for his accomplishments in his martial arts endeavors and at one point, his place as a positive role model for kids. And however you feel about the character he portrayed on that one show he’s often associated with, I honestly felt the guy did a good job with the role he was given in his prime years. However, when it comes to his public persona and his overbearing ego, he just rubs me the wrong way and I try to avoid anything involving him whatsoever.

The WWE 24/7 Convenience Store Championship

For some strange reason, I felt the need to expand on the quick thoughts I threw up a couple days ago regarding WWE’s latest gimmick to try and turn their sagging ratings around: the 24/7 championship.

Introduced by WWE legend Mick Foley at the start of the third hour of RAW, the 24/7 title is essentially the modern-day take on the old Hardcore championship of yesteryear. More specifically, it is focused on the 24/7 rule of the Crash Holly days where the title can change hands anywhere at any time, so long as there is a WWE official on hand to administer the decision.

So this thing has been mocked by some and praised by others. A couple days ago, I’ve suggested that the theory behind the title was something that appealed to me… but questioned the execution. I suppose I could expand on that mentality a bit by addressing a few points of criticism.

DTM BLOG Classic Is Now Closed FOREVER

This doesn’t mean anything to anyone since it hasn’t been touched for a good long while, but I recently closed my original DTM BLOG Classic and left the following notice on the page:

I started this webspace back in 1999, back when it was called Dave’s Webpage. It underwent an number of other names – The Twisted Realm Of DTM, DTM Webstation, and a couple others… but when I discovered Tripod’s blogging feature in 2004, the website became a secondary hub to the blog that would be dubbed DTM Blog. And for the better part of five years, it was my main web presence for better or worse. And then I discovered the Blogger service in 2009 and migrate my main presence there, with this sticking around for a few years as something of a historical archive. I kept the page up mostly for myself, but keep a link to the site for those interested.
But there comes a time when all good things must come to an end. And as I take a huge step forward in 2019, it eventually means having to let go a few things. Some of those things could be trivial, while others have been a major part of your life. This would fall under the latter category. And so it is with a heavy heart that I announce that DTM Blog Classic has officially been shut down. This page will stay online until an undetermined date, by which point, any and all traces of this webspace that has been a part of my life since 1999 will be gone for good.
Six years ago, I wrote the final page of this original DTM Blog. Today, I close the book. Tomorrow, I bury it in the grave.
The Tripod space, in general, has been a sticking point in my early life. While the Webstation had migrated over to various web services that have proven futile, this Tripod space held firm, being the place where my main blog took place. Again, the DTM Blog represents something of a transitional phase in my web presence, for lack of a better term. It was originally supposed to be a companion piece to my old website, the DTM Webstation. But somewhere along the way, the Blog ended up getting more of my attention than the Webstation. Maybe it was the ease of use. Maybe it was the lack of hassle in updating templates and uploading pages upon pages worth of content and hope all the links worked properly. All I know is that somewhere along the way, the Webstation eventually went the way of the doo-doo and my focus was on this blog.

Of course, it eventually got to a point where the Tripod blogging software wasn’t going to suffice given the slightly more ambitious plans I was going for. I was about to post videos around 2009 and the cumbersome editor wasn’t going to cut it. Someone had suggested the Blogger site and I made an account there. The end result is two blogs; The Twisted Realm of DTM and the DTM Review Archive.

With those blogs, I could do a lot more than I could on the Tripod space… and it was also much easier and bearable to embed videos there than here. For a while, I managed both Twisted Blog (as it was known at the time) and this blog, but the Twisted Blog eventually took precedence and in April 2010, I formally retired the DTM Blog, relegated it to an archive of older works. In 2013, I made that retirement of the whole space more permanent. And while I initially resisted and flat out rejected the notion of shutting this space down, I eventually realized that I needed to consolidate all my web presence to one singular platform. That eventually means getting rid of the excess stuff.

And so, in a few short months, I aim to clear the room… for good.

While this blog and this space is done for good, my excessive ramblings and depressing memoirs continue over at dtm666.com, which is due to undergo a major change in the coming months. And so, to everyone who has ever taken the time to check out some of my written ramblings and whatnots, I thank you for your time and your indulgence. I sincerely hope that you’ve gotten a little something out of these ramblings because I’ve certainly got something far more substantial than anything imaginable. It’s been a thrill and a hell of a ride, but now we’ve come to our last stop.

The book is closed. Thanks for stopping by.
