ECW on SyFy (August 1st, 2006): The Show That Killed ECW

At least one guy paid to see CM Punk. Is that a good thing?

We’re switching gears by looking at an episode of WWE’s rebooted ECW show. Extreme Championship Wrestling was a promotion that gained a cult following until its closure in 2001. WWE would later release a DVD on ECW in 2004 that sold big numbers, prompting them to book a reunion PPV the following year that would also prove successful. This resulted in WWE deciding to revive ECW as a third brand.

“Hooray!” everyone thought, “ECW is back, baby!”

Except it really wasn’t. Oh, sure, it started off on the right foot with another One Night Stand that saw Rob Van Dam defeat John Cena in ECW territory to win the WWE World title, and later getting the revived ECW title. But then that first episode hit and it took place after a Smackdown taping. It was largely poorly received. WWE’s third brand was off to a bad start. Then RVD got busted for weed and he’d lose the the ECW title to the Big Show before getting suspended.

Eventually, ECW would hold a live show at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York; one of the old ECW strongholds that held a strong ECW following. So what does WWE book as a main event for this return to New York? The reigning ECW World Heavyweight Champion BIG SHOW would defend the title against Dave Batista… the furthest thing from an ECW main event that you could get.

What could possibly go right?

Review #922 – Legends Of Wrestling II (Game Boy Advance)

The infamous Legends Of Wrestling II for GBA that was subject of a video review that was subject of a commentary I recorded where I expressed my disgust over how awful the game was and not the reviewer in question… but yeah, that’s a thing that happened.
For those wondering, here’s the old ROTR review of Legends Of Wrestling II on the GBA by Tommy Tallarico. Hope he’s doing well these days: https://youtu.be/8ZbyzuHBzU8

State Of The Blog – December 2022

The last update of the year is going to be brief. Sadly, sickness and stress had derailed a month’s worth of videos, so we’re going to have to make up for lost time. Don’t know how much that will entail, but we’re going to make up for lost time.
The idea is to whip a new Sunday Gimmick Table every week to build up to 25. The Retron1 video was a last-minute thing and not something that was planned, but the original video wasn’t ready, wasn’t going to be ready, and so it was delayed. Fine. Whatever. We’ll delay that. Debating on whether I want to do the 25th video on Christmas or New Year’s Day. If it’s the former, I may need to double up on one day. We’ll see on that count.
There’s only one DTM-Cast episode being uploaded this week. It’s the year-end edition, with the Winners And Losers of 2022 preview being the main thing, but if anything else worth talking about comes up, I’ll let you folks now. Once that episode is up (or once the SGT is up should I decide on New Year’s Day being the day, there will be a two-week period of radio silence on the blog before things begin to pick up. And I already have plans for the future.
And that’s about it. Nothing major on the archival front. PPV Musings are on hold for the time being until late-January. Next update might not hit until mid-January when posts resume then.
Enjoy your holidays and have a happy 2023.

WWE Survivor Series 2022 – WARGAMES!

Yeah, I’m not going to spend too much time on this one. But the big selling point for this show was the proper WWE debut of WARGAMES, after a couple years of being largely an NXT deal. And of course, we’ve got a men’s Wargames and a women’s Wargames. Not because storylines dictate it, but because the marketing says so. Still, this should be a fun watch and if nothing else, I’m just happy I could watch a Survivor Series show that isn’t about the whole brand supremacy thing that nobody outside of WWE or its most hardest of hardcore fanatics could give two fucks about.
Quick thoughts after the break.

Sunday Gimmick Table #20 – Hyperkin Retron1 (from 2016)

Recycling a segment from an old Christmas thing and turning it into a video six years later, it’s the Hyperkin Retron 1 from 2016. Just so this doesn’t come across as a total copy-and-paste job (though, let’s be honest, it is), there’s an extra bit at the end that’s brand new. Anyway, it’s better than nothing and I didn’t need ten Kickstarters to pull it off.
Would’ve been nice, though.
Yes, there’s a glitch in the opening titles. It stays in.
