AEW Dynamite (April 24th, 2024): Good Grief…

Saw bits and pieces of Wednesday’s Dynamite show, which was the post-PPV edition of the program following what I heard was a tremendous Dynasty PPV. Maybe somewhere along the way I’ll get back to watching that, but in the meantime, I watched this AEW Dynamite show and, well, random thoughts after the break…

Yeah, let’s start with that main event promo. You know, the one where Jack Perry (who made his long awaited return to AEW at the PPV) and Tony Khan give each other a hug to re-instate Perry back into the company, only for Jack to hit TK with a mic, resulting in his falling on the mat flat and dead… only to remember that he’s supposed to sell this heinous attack. And then the Bucks come in, pretend to help out their boss, and they give him that combo piledriver or whatever it’s called… so the point is that Jack Perry is back in the fold. Could we not have done this without having another authority figure not know how to sell? Do we REALLY need Tony Khan as an on-screen character? It’s already bad enough when he comes across as a bit of a goof whenever he has to deliver actual news, but now I have to see this guy pretend to act? Is this really how we’re trying to spice things up around here?

I don’t know what the point of all this was. You’d think TK would’ve been smart enough to realize that NOBODY wants to cheer for the rich authority figure no matter how nice they are. You’d think that TK would’ve been smart enough to realize that only a handful of people (at most) could pull off the evil authority figure convincingly. I get that they want to try and turn recent events into fodder for your wrestling storylines, but the whole thing comes across as hokey. Even when they try to be serious, the Bucks come across as somewhat goofy. It’s like the Miz trying to be a vindictive, angry person fighting the most important battle of his life… he just looks like a goof doing that shit.

So yeah… I expect plenty of memes to come out of this one… and not necessarily in the best light possible. On the bright side, if this is their way of writing TK out of the public eye and he stays off the Twitters, then I might give it a pass. Otherwise… no buys.

Promo segment with Willow celebrating her new title win over Julia Hart, only for Mercedes to come out and kill the mood so we can hype up her eventual winning of the title… and let me tell you something, brother. This Mercedes person – you’d figure after all this time, she’d want to try and evolve her delivery beyond the rubbish they used to give her in WWE… but instead, she’s playing the same tired heel schtick that she’s always played. And it sucks. Absolutely wretched segment once Mercedes came along to ruins things. Here’s hoping that Willow retains, but my hopes aren’t high.

Newly crowned AEW World Champion defeated Kyle Fletcher, who is a champion in ROH, but keeps losing matches in AEW and thus why should I care? I mean, look, the match was fine. Both guys managed a fairly decent match, but you’d figure a new World Champion would have a stronger showing than just another match.

And while we’re on the subject, that match between Jon Moxley and Powerhouse Hobbs… not good. I was kind of hoping for something a little more hard hitting, a bit more intense. Mox tends to be a bit of a brawler at heart and Hobbs is a big fucker who beats the fuck out of other fuckers. So this should’ve been a match made in heaven… and instead, it was this dull, boring match where nobody seemed to know what the fuck they were doing. And when a commoner who hasn’t wrestled a lick in his life is able to say that freely, then I don’t know what to tell you.

And then there’s another Jericho segment… apparently, he’s now the new FTW champion… and he’s going to start yet another faction with Big Bill in tow. You know what? I’ll say something nice for once; it’s nice to see Big Bill getting used for once. The guy formerly known as Big Cass in WWE had really stepped up his game and I’ve been wondering why they weren’t doing anything with the guy… so that’s something. I only wish he wasn’t paired up with Jericho, who feels a bit stale and tired. Something you don’t normally associate with Jericho, but… yeah, I don’t know about go-away heat or whatever the case may be. Apparently, numbers for these segments were comparably good, so they’re going to do more of these…. but these feel like Jericho is just coasting and trolling for the sake of it. And I’m like… eh.

Not much to say about this show, sadly. Honestly wasn’t a fan of this episode. Oh well… better luck next time.
