Random Thoughts On… Not Shazam.

So I finally got to watch the teaser trailer for the upcoming Captain Marvel movie and my initial reaction was meh. Wasn’t excited, wasn’t depressed, it was just a thing that I watched and moved on with my life. I gave it another quick watch just a short time ago and my tune really hasn’t changed all that. This will probably be straight-to-Netflix for me if it gets to that point and that’s been the case with a lot of the Marvel output aside from Infinity War, which we did get to see in theaters. It also doesn’t help that the film is featuring the Carol Danvers character; a character that I was never too keen on in either her Ms. Marvel or Captain Marvel phase. If anything, the best use of Carol Danvers was to be the sacrificial lamb for Rogue, a much more interesting character and member of the X-People.

So, apparently, there’s a big stink being made by the fact that Carol Danvers (played by Brie Larson) doesn’t smile enough in the trailer. More than likely, this stink was brought up on Twitter because Twitter is populated by stupid people. Unfortunately, there’s enough stupid people in the world to turn this into a big deal for some reason. I watch the trailer and yes, for the majority of the trailer, Danvers doesn’t show much emotion, if any. There’s a couple hints of a slight grin during the airfield scene or a pained expression when she’s shooting laser beams, but for the most part, it’s just this stone-faced expression that, upon second viewing, made me wonder if this was an actual human actress in the role or another of those digitally CG mock-ups without the facial expressions programmed in. I mean, at this point, it wouldn’t surprise me considering the efforts they went into de-aging SLJ and that other guy named Phil.

I don’t know; maybe the people who made this teaser figured we needed more impressions of Lt. Commander Data and save the emotional bits for the actual movie.

And that’s just the thing; it’s a teaser. It’s just a brief snippet of a much larger playfield. You have these scenes which take place, but no context to go with it. Why is Captain Marvel punching some old lady on a bus? Unless you’re familiar with the comics, you wouldn’t have a clue and assume that Captain Marvel is an asshole. There’s a scene where Carol’s on this alien world and there’s no sense of wonder or astonishment or any sort of subtle emotion… but on the flip side, what makes you think that this was her first time? For all we know, she may have been on that world for who knows how long. Maybe it’s something that’s taken from the end of the movie. After all, we need to explain why this person has been non existent during the entirety of the Marvel Cinematic Canon.

Look… I don’t know if this is going to be a good movie or not. Nobody can assume such a thing from a teaser trailer. Right now, the teaser trailer is a thing that happened and not much more than that. I’m neither excited nor enraged; I’m just like… whatever. I’ll just wait for the next trailer to come along and provide a little more light on what this Captain Marvel movie is all about. Maybe the trailer will show more emotion than this trailer did. Or maybe they’ll just add more stone-faced Brie and then Twitter can complain about it… and I stop caring entirely because Twitter ruins everything.

And that’s all I’ve got to say about that, really.

P.S. Maybe in five to ten years time, if they decide to reboot Captain Marvel, they can go with the Monica Rambeau version instead. Not only is she female, but also a female of color; two checks off the diversity checklist. Also, a much better character than Ms. Cannon Fodder For Rogue.

Big Bang Theory To End Next May… Thank Fuck For That

Source: https://www.nytimes.com/2018/08/22/business/media/big-bang-theory-ending.html

The Big Bang Theory, the most popular series among geeks for whatever reason that began way back in 2007, is going to end its run after a whopping twelve seasons… and thank fuck for that.

I remember watching this show in its early days and being rather unimpressed by it. While there was some moments of brief entertainment – anything involving Wil Wheaton of all people – for the most part, it was just an irritating show that somehow got watched by a whole bunch of stupid people and I could never get into. When I watch a show, I usually stick around because the characters are likable and maybe even relatable to a certain extent… and Big Bang Theory featured neither of these traits in any of these characters, who come off as unlikeable, self-entitled assholes and stereotypes… much like modern-day social media.

Hey, no wonder why I couldn’t get into this show!

Off To See Soyo A Stare Warz Storing

So, by the time this post is eventually published, I will be off to watch that Soyo movie… or is it Solow… wait, maybe it’s Lowblow? I don’t know… that movie and stuff. I don’t know if the viewing will entice me to do some semblance of a full-blown post or revive that slideshow movie reviews, but if nothing else, it’ll be an interesting ride to say the least. Hopefully, the end result will be an enjoyable film if not a good one.

On blog-related matters, I’m presently rendering the House Show at the moment and if all goes well, it should be up live on Youtube tonight or tomorrow. Said show will probably be featured tomorrow on the blog, so check the channel later on to see if the upload made it in one piece. There’s bound to be glitches (my first attempt in a year), but hopefully things’ll be ironed out for the next one… assuming there is a next one.

The Has Been – A digital series by Amy Jo Johnson

A teaser for a proposed digital series about an aging actress whose best days are behind her and is left with endless debts. The more this video is shared, the more likely this will get funding. I don’t know how exactly that works, but the series premise shows promise and I wouldn’t mind watching something like this on a regular basis.

But only if there’s a spin-off starring JDF.

Audiences LOVE Baywatch… But Not The Movie (Or Else It’d Actually Make Money)

Yes, I’m using a screenshot from an old episode of RAW for this thing, but I’d like to imagine the image above as the Rock telling The People that they like Baywatch… though there is a very good chance that none of those folks actually saw the movie.

So this past weekend, the Rock did a rare stupid thing by playing the whole “Critics vs. Fans” card, citing that while reviews for his new Baywatch reboot may have been shit, the fans voiced their approval loud and cleared, as indicated by the metrics over at Rotten Tomatoes… because when you need a good, solid metric on what makes a movie good, you go to a site called Rotten Tomatoes.

That’s like expecting a credible review from someone who calls himself the Angry Video Game Nerd.

Unfortunately, while audiences liked Baywatch, they didn’t like it enough to pay money for it, as the movie only raked in close to $22 million on opening weekend; apparently, that’s considered a belly-flop. The film’s budget is $60 million. So that 77% approval rating over at that Tomato site… apparently comes from people who didn’t see the film.

I’m kidding, of course… or perhaps not. It’s hard to tell since anyone can vote whether they’ve seen the movie or not. So it’s entirely possible…

Now, look. I like Rock. I think he’s a great one. And the guy can be forgiven for the occasional bomb or two along the way. I’m just scared that if they make a Baywatch sequel, it’ll be direct to video and star Larry The Cable Guy. That’s what happened with The Tooth Fairy, after all.

Arizona Man Tried To Kill JDF At A Con

Also, there’s a video of JDF speaking on the incident.

That’s just sad.

Look, I’m never going to be a card carrying member of the JDF Fan Club given the guy’s antics, but for someone to go that far is just too much. Glad to see that he’s okay and things didn’t go farther than they did.

Why I Don’t Mind The Star Wars Trilogy 1997 Special Editions

1997 was the 20th Anniversary of Star Wars and Lucasfilm had a novel idea for a celebration; re-releasing the Star Wars trilogy for theatrical release and updating them with some new scenes and special effects. In the case of Star Wars, it was the restoration of a lost encounter between Han Solo and Jabba The Hutt… and two seconds of additional footage between Han and Greedo that has been derided for years on end. In the case of Jedi, it was new music to accommodate a couple extra bits, including our first canonical look at the imperial planet of Coruscant, which was something only touched on in novels and computer games.

You know, I was kinda hoping that I didn’t have to revive this “gimmick” which involves me railing on a certain individual for some of his acts of stupidity both online and beyond… and in fairness, I probably wouldn’t have if this piece of news hadn’t come my way… but since it’s been a while since a certain label has been attributed to one of these blog posts, I might as well go back into that mindset for this one occasion because this is just too good to pass up.

Bare with me, kids. It’s been a while since I’ve done this.

Also, spoiler warning. Hence the break.
