AEW Double Or Nothing 2025

Your eyes do not deceive. It’s a PPV Musings on a recent AEW Pay-Per-View event.

In all honesty, this shouldn’t be much of a surprise. While it’s no secret that I haven’t been a fan of the general creative direction that AEW has been going on in recent months, I’d be lying if I said that there were some efforts made in trying to steer the ship right. And also, regardless of my feelings on the current AEW product, watching Double Or Nothing has become something of a tradition going back to the very first event back in 2019. If nothing else, I’d like to keep that tradition going similar to how some friends I know, who largely gave up on wrestling years ago, will still make a point to watch Wrestlemania every year… though some couldn’t keep up with the two-night Buy One Get One free set-up, but that’s okay.

With that having been said, I’d be lying if I said that this year’s Double Or Nothing event felt like a complete afterthought. What was once one of their big tentpole events has basically become the equivalent of a B-level PPV event as we gear up for All In from Texas in July. This year’s Double Or Nothing is a bit of a milestone, as it is the first event since the 2022 edition NOT to emanate from the traditional home of Las Vegas – which just hosted the 5-night Buy One, Get One free extravaganza known as Wrestlemania 41 headlined by Cold Manipulator Punk, but rather from Glensdale, Arizona… who once hosted a hockey team here.

Still, there was some fun stuff to look forward to here and also… well, let’s not jump ahead here and instead dive into this one… off the deep end, Mr. Scott.

R-Truth And Carlito Will Be Fine Without WWE

News of WWE not renewing the contracts of R-Truth and Carlito have caused some online noise from fans who claim they won’t be watching WWE anymore as a result of this. Presumably, these are the same people who claim that they would not subscribe to the WWE Network after the Royal Fumble of 2015 and then soon after, said network saw an increase in subscription numbers.

Listen, folks. I get that you like Truth and Carlito’s bits in WWE… but they’ll be fine without them. Truth had a rather notable run in TNA, where he had been a two-time NWA World champion. Carlito has also made some noise outside of WWE. Both guys will be fine. If you want to show support, follow them wherever they go. If they end up in TNA, watch TNA. If they end up in AEW, watch AEW and cheer for them until TK decides to sideline them for months or worse, put them on a Ring Of Honor show that nobody is watching. It’s not the end of the world for these guys. They’ll be fine.

Lay off the net noise and go outside for a bit. Eat some grass or something.

Sunday Gimmick Table #35 – Street Fighter II MicroArcade Table Top Thing

A cheap and efficient way of playing Street Fighter II on your coffee table… or you could get a Switch/SteamDeck/whatever portable that can play the 30th Anniversary Collection or Arcade Stadium or whatever you have SF2 available on… or maybe play something else, instead. I guess…

State Of The Blog – June 2025

The last couple months suck in terms of material as far as video content is concerned. So consider this my way of playing catch-up while there’s a whole bunch of other shit going on at the same time. It’s as good a time as any to let y’all know that… there’s some developments behind the scenes that’s well worth checking out if you missed out on last night’s video stream thing.

On The 31st Day… A Declaration Of Not Having Watched Section 31

It is May 31st of the year 2025 and I am following previously established mandate that requires me to inform the readers of this blog that I have NOT watched the Section 31 movie starring Academy Award Winner Michelle Yeoh.

I am aware that it is on some semblance of physical media.

I’ve got better things to do with my money.

I’m helping myself to a Baconator today.

Cine-meh-sacre

So James Rolfe recently started a Rex Viper Youtube channel dedicated to his garage band who do covers of popular and game music. It’s an acquired taste for those who enjoy that sort of stuff, but apparently, none of them are Cinemassacre fans, who treated the news like they were struck with measles. Apparently, some of these fans don’t care for Rex Viper and wish Rolfe had put more energy into AVGN instead.

So, lo and behold, the new AVGN episode is up and I give it a watch. It’s him playing through Dragon’s Lair on NES – a game he had covered previously, but never made it past the first screen. So he played more of the game and also, there’s a sideplot about “younger” Nerd also playing the game. “Younger” Nerd is wearing a bad wig… which I suppose is supposed to be bad and, well, congrats, Jimbo. You got a bad wig. It looks bad. And this whole episode was… BAD.

I realize the guy has a family and kids. He’s got other stuff to do. He’s got other interests he’d rather be doing. I get that AVGN is at the point of “contractual obligation” rather than something that he genuinely wants to continue. But this was bad. I don’t remember the last time I’ve seen a genuinely good AVGN episode in the 2020s, let alone the past decade. I mean, the production is fine for what it is… but the jokes are lame, the act is tiresome,

People are accusing Rolfe of suffering a midlife crisis and figured it’d be over when he’s done with this Rex Viper thing… except they’re focused on the wrong thing. AVGN is the midlife crisis that needs to be over and done with. The act is old, his heart isn’t in it, the chances of him making another episode as memorable as the early ones – when that shit was genuinely funny and worthwhile – lie somewhere between “jack shit” and “fuck all,” and honestly, given the gaps between episodes, maybe there comes a point where you just need to put it down… or at least give it a nice extended break.

If James Rolfe wants to do this Rex Viper thing, then let him do it. If you like what it does, by all means, support it. But if not, then move on to something else and find something that you will like. There’s bound to be something out there that isn’t just stale, tired, and uninspired. The angry reviewing phase has come and gone. The people who used to do it have either moved on to something else or evolved to something else. UrinatingTree’s a great example; one of the older stock of angry reviewer-types who was genuinely funny until one day, he decided to do sports stuff and the guy’s killing it. The late Emer Prevost was another one – he did a bunch of game and comic reviews before starting up his Reaction & Review series where he watches a movie, reacts to it, and then reviews it on the fly. I’ll go so far to say that as much as I enjoy some of their older games stuff; I dug their later stuff a bit more… and I say this as a guy who’s not a sportsball fan or anything.

Let the guy do different things that he might actually like. If AVGN dies tomorrow, nothing of value will have been lost because AVGN has sucked for years. Honestly, everything after the movie has been kinda trash.

Meh.
