Smackdown (Sept. 23rd, 2022) – Stuff Happens, I Guess

Well, I’ve decided to give Smackdown a shot. Normally, this isn’t seen as a big deal, but I want to see if this becomes a regular viewing thing on Friday nights or deserving of a spot on my DVR alongside Dynamite and even the occasional episode of Impact that I might sit down and watch.

Of course, the episode that I choose to jump on board for is following the announcement that Youtube star and moonlighting boxer Logan Paul is slated to challenge Roman Reigns for the WWE Undisputed Championship… in Saudi Arabia. That means I can expect a build towards a main event that doesn’t interest me in the slightest on a show that I have no intention of watching. For the record, the only Saudi show I’ve seen was the first one from back in 2018 with the Greatest Oil Rumble or whatever it’s called and I’ve made a point to never watch these shows, no matter how important they are.

Honestly, they should’ve saved this main event for when they end up doing a show in Japan. I hear Logan Paul has done great things for the dead community there… but I digress. How was this Smackdown show?

WWE Summerslam 2022

I had a somewhat cute little intro about Summerslam in July, but honestly, I wasn’t feeling it.
I missed the show when it aired lived; had a nice road trip that day with the family and when I got back, I really wasn’t feeling in the mood to do anything but sleep, so I held off until a week or so later. Of course, the musings for this show are only happening now because I wanted to get the last two Summerslams out of the way first.
So it’s live from Nashville and it’s a stadium show, surprisingly enough. So it looks different from the usual homogenized sets they usually use.

WWE Summerslam 2021

Yeah, I’ve got nothing for this one, kids… so GOOMBA!
Summerslam 2021 took place on a Saturday; the rare instance of the annual PPV taking place on another day outside of its usual Sunday night airing. Summerslam 2021 took place the night after former former wrestler Cookie Monster Punk made his return to wrestling on the second episode of AEW Rampage.
I didn’t watch Summerslam last year; I had better things to do. And reading the results from the show as well as news that it went beyond the promised three-hour runtime meant that it was going to be the first major WWE PPV that I would miss out on. But since this year’s Summerslam is looking to go international, I’d figure that I’ve got nothing to lose and give this show a shot.

WWE Money In The Bank 2022

Yes, your eyes do not deceive you. I am doing a PPV musings on yet another WWE PPV in 2022.
Don’t get too excited. I had a stomach ache last night, I couldn’t sleep, and this popped up so I figured why not? At the very least, if the show sucked and made me fall asleep, it’d be worth it. I’m also not going to say a whole lot here since I haven’t been following WWE as of late.

AEW Dynamite (June 8th, 2022): Interim All-Atlantic Western Stages Heritage Clustermuck

Some questionable stuff from All Elite Wrestling, which should shock some folks, I’m sure, but like I said a couple times, the honeymoon period is long gone and now I’ve got things to complain as it relates to this recent of Dynamite.
Before we get to that, let me just say that wrestling-wise, this episode delivered the goods. There was a really good main event in Jon Moxley vs. Kyle O’Reilly. I might not think of Cool Kyle as a top-tier name, but he’s getting there. PAC vs. Buddy Matthews was pretty fun as well… yes, I’m forgoing the usual PAC gimmick; that’s how dour I am. Hangman Page getting a big win over New Japan’s David Finlay resulted in another good match. Thunder Rosa, your reigning AEW Women’s World Champion, was stuck having to carry one of Cold Ronda’s buddies to a borefest of a match, but at least she was on TV.
Okay, so we’ve highlighted the highlights, which remains the wrestling. Now click the break to start an effigy on the booking, which BAFFLED me to no end.

WWE Backlash 2022 (a.k.a. Wrestlemania Rehash)

Consider this a bonus musings before the regularly scheduled PPV musings for the day pops up later on. Long story short; I was feeling a bit sick and this popped up, so I figured “why not?”
The good news is that the show was a little under three hours and went by fairly quickly. Not only that, but for the most part, the wrestling was largely good, even if some of the finishes were somewhat weak. If you’re going into this just wanting some good wrestling, this Backlash show (I refuse to call it the full name) covers that bare minimum quite nicely.

With that said, if you’re looking for something a little more worthwhile and worthy of the premium live event moniker that they like to toss around, then this isn’t it. This was a case of a show where nothing of note happened. Yeah, Ronda won the Smackdown title in that I Quit match, but that’s a win that should’ve happened at Mania and other than that, you’ve got a show of rematches where nothing of note happened. Again, there’s good wrestling on here if that’s all you want, but otherwise, you could easily skip this and not miss a beat.

Ramblemania 38

Well…

As has been the case for the past couple years, Wrestlemania has been split into a two-night affair and as before, I will be covering both nights under a single post. This is the format that we’re going to follow going forward if they continue like this. Not only that, but because this year’s Wrestlemania – not counting the pre-shows – was a collective EIGHT FUCKING HOURS, I’ve made the decision to watch these shows chunks at a time. And how long did it take for me to finally watch this stuff?

Let’s be real; the fact that you’ve had to wait until MAY to get my thoughts on this year’s Wrestlemania should be an indication that something was not on the level. It took me two weeks to watch EIGHT FUCKING HOURS of Wrestlemania 38. It begins… just as I said it would. Therefore, both nights are covered, as are the points where I’d pause the show to consume on another night… because Wrestlemania these days are too tedious to sit through on a single sitting, much less two.

WWE Evolution (Oct. 2018 PPV)

I could have added a more flattering picture of Cold Ronda, but that’d be an impossible task.

Welp… so, here we are. From October 2018, the WWE’s first and (thus far) only all-women PPV featuring women’s matches and such.

So here’s the deal; 2018 was the year WWE started doing shows in Saudi Arabia, beginning with the Oil Rumble early on. People were upset because, among other things we won’t get into here, women weren’t allowed to compete in the country. So in what was clearly a carefully-planned public relations move to try and curtail any negative press from those Saudi shows, WWE concocted this all-women Evolution show to try and get people talking. Apparently, it was a success – or so people say – but beyond this one show, there was never another Evolution show… probably because the Saudis eventually allowed WWE to have one women’s match on their WWE Blood Money shows.

Or maybe it’s because of someone else… I don’t know. I might be giving it away.

Anyway, I don’t know why they didn’t do another show. I could venture guess and assume they’re waiting for Cold Ronda to come back from hibernation before they hold another one because she’s the real draw… next to Charlotte, of course. Honestly, there are a lot of ideas that they’ve tried with the Network that seemed good on paper and even partly in execution, but were promptly forgotten about and discarded as such. But I can’t help but feel a bit cynical about this show and the circumstances that led to its one outing. As much as as the women praised the event and wanted another one, the belief that this was a purely PR-driven move and not something that was thought up with any genuine interest had kept me from giving this the time of day.

Years have passed and, for better or worse, I decided to give this a shot and see if it was really as good as people made it out to be. Partly because of the bad taste left by that match from that TNA show last week, partly because of the NWA women’s show coming, and also partly because of the possible rumor that Queen Of The Ring will happen and have some presence at the next Blood Money event in Saudi Arabia. So, hey, why not?

And no, I will NEVER watch any of the Blood Money PPVs. Only reason I saw the first one because I was bed-ridden and didn’t have the clicker. All the rest can go fly a kite for all I care.

TNA One Night Only – Knockouts Knockdown IV (2016)

Did you folks know that to this day, I have yet to see that Evolution show that WWE put out a couple years ago? The all-female show that was headlined by Cold Ronda defending against one of the Bella twins was apparently a big success, but not enough to warrant another show… probably because they are waiting for Cold Ronda to come back so she can main event it. I never got around to seeing it and it was just a complete afterthought. People tell me it was a good show and I try to make a point to watch it, but never do… probably because I come across something on the network that intrigues me a hell of a lot more.

However, I did see TNA’s fourth Knockouts Knockdown One night only PPV from 2016… a concept that makes no sense since a lot of these so-called One Night Only shows are annual traditions. The Knockouts Knockdown is the series of women-only PPV and today’s show – the fourth in the series – isn’t as good as Evolution is supposed to be. How do I know this? Because this is the show with Shelly and Rebel.

Yes, that match.

I guess I’ll make a point to watch Evolution for next week, then.
