TNA Slammiversary 2024

So I watched Slammiversary this past weekend… no, I didn’t attend the show – it took place in Montreal in front of a packed 5000+ at the Verdun Auditorium, which was probably the biggest crowd TNA has done in a long, LONG time, so good for them – but I did catch the PPV and to say that stuff happened on this show would be an understatement.

Though, yes, let’s the big lemon out of the way; Joe Hendry didn’t win the TNA title in the main event six-man elimination match. Honestly, I didn’t really expect him to despite the massive pop he got in the arena, but this was all about Nic Nemeth proving that he’s still got it and while I’m sure people are upset and going “TNA DOESN’T BELIEVE” or something like that, I have a feeling Joe Hendry is going to get a big run somewhere down the line… so long as he isn’t poached by WWE once his contract expires, of course.

In any event, there was a PPV. I have some quick thoughts and here we go…

Tony Khan Uses Black Magic To Ban Joe Hendry From Ever Appearing In AEW

They say that if you say his name, Joe Hendry will appear.

Already making waves in his current home promotion of TNA Wrestling, the Scottish sensation and former Local Hero recently made waves by appearing on WWE’s NXT television show on Tuesday nights, much to the delight of the crowd. Not only that, but it seems that Hendry’s appearances have had effect on the ratings and overall television product.

Hearing about this and fearful that Joe Hendry’s magic might effect his own promotions, AEW president and ROH owner Tony Khan had administered some black magic hocus pocus to prevent Joe Hendry from ever appearing on AEW television for the foreseeable future. Not even saying his name would cause the former WCPW Champion to appear at either AEW or ROH events for the foreseeable future. While Khan considers Hendry to be a great wrestler, he’s nowhere near the greatness of his many big wrestling stars like Jumpin’ Jack Perry or the Warhorsemen. Hendry’s appearing in AEW could invoke some much needed energy and enthusiasm into the show, something Khan clearly doesn’t want to detracted from the main event angle of the Elite running roughshod in AEW ever since they attacked the AEW head… even though he’s back in the office.

Morale in the AEW locker room is said to be at an all-time low, but Tony Khan promise that they have all the talent they need right here… before announcing the signing of ten more free agents from some obscure Japanese wrestling promotion that nobody outside of the hardcoriest of hardcore fans could honestly give two fucks about.

Also in other news, Drew McIntyre played a game of Pong against a vacuum cleaner. He was on the verge of winning until that fucking asshole Phil came along and distracted Drew, allowing the vacuum clean to mount an incredible comeback for the win.

Across The Grid: The Other PR Comic Written By PR Actors

So BOOM! Studios announced a one-shot Power Rangers comic called Across The Grid, which will be an anthology of stories written by various Power Rangers actors, including David Yost, Walter Jones, Steve Cardenas, Nakia Burrise, and Meghan Camarena (the Strawburry person of Hyperforce fame.) The issue will see release in late-October and who knows? Maybe if it goes well, it could invite other actors to come in and share their own stories if they have any to share.

Now that I think about it, considering David Yost is one of the contributors to this thing, what are the odds he decides to take his Quantum Continuum thing and turn it into a comic book series? I know some would prefer it to be a television project, but honestly, you could do so much more with the comic book medium and not have to worry about budgetary limitations or the like. Amy Jo Johnson proved such a thing is possible and can turn out great. Maybe Yost could consider the same avenue?

For what it’s worth, I’ve read the two scripts that he put out… I have no qualms about saying that it’s not my sort of story, but there is some potential for a compelling series here should he want to develop it further. All I’m saying is that if TV isn’t a viable option, then maybe consider the comic route because I feel it might work best there.

AEW Dynamite (July 17th, 2024) – I Said His Name And He Didn’t Appear…

I guess Tony Khan doesn’t believe in Joe Hendry.

He probably should; guy’s been doing great numbers for NXT lately. Wouldn’t surprise me if TNA pulled the trigger on him – not that I would expect them to.

Alas, we’re not talking about Impact – even though we probably should – but rather it’s this past Wednesday’s Dynamite show, which is the last show before next week’s big Blood & Guts match, which is a regular annual thing we do rather than something that’s needed to raise the stakes in a hot feud. I’ll be honest with you, folks; I am not feeling this Elite Vs. Team AEW thing that’s going on. The whole thing comes across as totally lame and also confuses me; so the Elite take out Tony Khan so that they can take over AEW, but now that he’s back, they… still have power and we have a limp dick commissioner in Christopher Daniels. Meanwhile, we’re trying to make the former Jungle Boy into a big time heel act and we even gave him the TNT title, but he comes across as such a wannabe tough-guy sounding geek that I can’t help but laugh. Then there’s Okada, one of the New Japan greats, who’s more than content to phone it in while racking in the dough. He must have learned a thing or two from Shinsuke Nakamura.

Just about the only guy who feels like a major heel is Hangman, who’s only in this match so that he can continue his feud with Swerve, who also happens to be the only major face on the AEW side of the match. Making up that group is Mark Briscoe – a guy that people actually like, but hasn’t done much of anything on AEW television… the fact that he happens to be the reigning ROH World Champion seems to be more of an afterthought than anything. And then we have the Acclaimed – good tag team, but not quite a major force for this type of match – and the returning Darby Allin, who seems to be perpetually punished for his wanting to climb Everest by suffering enough injuries to put off said climb and on top of that, going from one crazy match to another where he will undoubtedly try and kill himself to get more time on the injured list.

Right now, this Wargames, er, I mean, Blood & Guts match has no reason for existing beyond “it’s a thing we do every year.” It’s become the new “Hell In A Cell” where every year we do a Hell In A Cell match whether the matches warrant it or not. Hell, WWE stopped doing that with their Hell In A Cell match, but then turned around and turned Wargames into a Survivor Series thing. I mean, can we not just have these matches happen when we need them to happen to further the story? Must we have a match for the sake of a match? Do we have to pick up every discarded and hated WWE trope just so we could be the alternative to the other company that’s doing all the stuff we used to do? You know, the stuff that made us worth watching?

As far as the rest of the show goes… eh…

I very rarely lean into real world, serious stuff, but I figured that I’d chime in a quick thought on what happened this past weekend involving Donald Trump. I assume you know the details by now, so I won’t repeat that here. I do wish to offer my prayers and best wishes to the families of the one attendee who was killed and two others who were injured.
