Running On Steam (Not That Steam)

So here’s a post of random bits I want to touch on.

Things on the PC front is going well and slowly progressing forwards. With the second, larger hard drive installed, I’ve begun to slowly install a bunch of games on there from the Steam and GOG services, including a whole bunch of stuff I got from the Humble Bundle bundle things that I’m actually looking forward to trying out. It’s not the biggest upgrade, but it will give me a bit of wiggle room when it comes to storage and I can lay off plugging in the external drives every night. So that’ll be a nice step forwards, at least.

Weather around these parts has been ridiculous, with a couple days teasing a nice little heat wave before bombarding us with the traditional Canadian winter cold front. In fact, tomorrow, we may very bit hit with a good 20-30 cm of snow if the Weather Network can be relied on to provide an accurate forecast. They’re usually on the money, though. So I can’t complain too much there.

For those inquiring, the dog is doing fine. She’s had to take a dump in her special place indoors because trying to get her to go for a walk in Classic Canadian Winter temperatures is like trying to get Jim Cornette and Vince Russo to kiss and make up. Other than that, she’s doing fine and occupying her usual spot on the couch.

Two reviews coming for this week on the Youtubez: tomorrow’s Sonic Labyrinth and Friday will be the Goonies game that never hit the NES, but was available as an arcade machine for some reason. The Goonies game review will also be the 3100th blog post, so that’s a nice little something. Also, the next episode of the DTM-Cast due this Sunday will be somewhat on the light side unless something worth talking about comes up. More than likely, it’ll be about a couple blurbs and some Q&A. Not much else going on in these parts.

Not much else to say today. So I’ll be going now. Y’all have a good day, kids.

IMPACT (Mar. 11th, 2017) – The New Impact Wrestling… Oh Dear…

It’s a day late but that’s only because I saw it a day late and since I’ve seen it and since this is supposed to be a new day yes it is and since I don’t know what a comma is apparently I’m going to share my thoughts on the first episode of the brand spanking new IMPACT WRESTLING being run by all the old TNA guys.

I guess that’s good enough for TNA standards, right?

Anyway, to provide context, this is the first episode of Impact Wrestling under the direction of the new creative team of Jeff Jarrett, Scott D’Amore, Bruce Prichard, Dutch Mantell, and a couple other guys… essentially some of the folks who were around during the TNA heyday years, whatever that ends up meaning, I guess. The company had been acquired by the Anthem Sports group (who also owns the Fight Network up here in Canada) a while ago and have before this point produced lame bird episodes from what’s left of the old regime. And since this is a new era or something, this seems like the perfect jumping on point for someone looking to get into this would-be alternative to the WWE circus.

Some more context to provide; this is the first episode of Impact Wrestling that I actually sat down and watch in its entirety in years. Yes, despite the “brilliance” of Broken Fatt, Brother New Coke, and Not So Final Deletions, I haven’t had the urge or desire to catch up on anything going on with the TNA promotion beyond reports I’ve read online. If anything, the story of the administrative in-fighting and financial woes of the company were more compelling than anything that took place in the hexagonal circle.

With Dixie Carter and Billy Corgan turfed in some form or fashion and most of the major stars having left, I figured it’d be interesting to see how Jarrett and company fare on their first effort in a new chapter of Impact Wrestling. So I gave the first episode a go and well, you could read my full thoughts after the break. However, given the choice of image used for the header of this post, you could probably surmise what I thought of this first episode.

Grab a drink, kids. This is going to be a long one.

About That MMPRFanFilm Thing?

Anyone remember that MMPR Fan Film thing that caused a ruckus ages ago? The one that had a crowdfunding campaign then announced the release of their first episode, only to continually delay it again and again? The one fanfilm that is barred from discussions on Rangerboard?

The one I did a commentary on one of the trailers?

In a sudden burst of mild curiosity, I went ahead and visited their Facebook page, which hasn’t been updated since May of last year. Almost curiously, I decided to click on the link to their main website, wondering if that was still active.

The domain still works. Only now, it leads to a SimCity fan page that also hasn’t been updated in a while.

So I guess this project is dead and buried… and that sucks for the people who donated money to this thing.

Pathetic. Absolutely pathetic.

Hard Hitting Goldberg/KO Play By Play

Presently watching the Kevin Owens/Goldberg match at Fastlane. Here’s some hard-hitting commentary for this exciting match-up.

10:51 p.m. Goldberg makes his way to the ring.

10:53 p.m. Kevin Owens is standing on the stage

10:54 p.m. Kevin Owens makes his way to the ring.

10:55 p.m. Ring introductions are made. Goldberg chants are loud.

10:56 p.m. Trash talk followed by KO leaving the ring.

10:57 p.m. KO still walking. Goldberg gives a thumbs up.

10:58 p.m. KO about to walk in, drops back down.

10:59 p.m. KO on apron, steps in ring, walks out… bell hasn’t rung yet. Waiting for Jericho to show up because of course he will.

11:00 p.m. Oh there he is. Bell rings, KO gets speared, jackhammer, match over. New champion of the universe.

Well, that was a surprise… not.

The Fastline musings will be up this Thursday on the blog for those who care. Oh, by the way, I’m copying this bit for that piece, so…

Sonic Blast 2 Cover

From the Sonic Blast review.

Imagine a world where the first Sonic game to grace Sega’s new Dreamcast is not Sonic Adventure, but rather a sequel to a subpar Game Gear game. The end result would’ve been glorious…ly awful.

While I’m fairly certain an actual game called Sonic Blast 2 would feature a much better cover with original assets instead of copy-and-paste elements, there would be considerably more Blast in this game than in the portable title.

Probably a good thing we got Adventure instead.

Review A Great Game Day on April 8th

A few years back, now-defunct gaming website One More Castle established the Review A Bad Game Day event, where people can submit reviews of bad games to be posted on August 8th. I’ve done one such event, thinking it was a one-off thing, but turns out it was an annual thing all these years. Just as I was thinking of jumping back into that fold, One More Castle closes its doors and the event was closed… I ended up adopting the concept anyway, to the point that for the past couple years, every August 8th, I’d review a bad game.

The other concept they’ve started up a year or so later was the Review A Great Game day, where people would post reviews of great games and see them posted on April 8th. This event, I never participated in and I’m hoping to change that.

Next month, on April 8th, it’s going to be a good day to review a great game here on the blog. What that game will be… well, that’s the kicker… and the surprise.
