RAW Bytes (March 23rd, 2015) – Meh…

So it was last month that I was finally able to get the WWE Network… that is to say, the Canadian version of the WWE Network that happens to be the premium cable channel (which is supposedly based on the live stream of the US version or something). At the moment, the On-Demand version of the Network is accessible to Bell subscribers and that sorta makes me sad… but at the same time, this premium channel version ain’t too shabby, either.
There’s a lot of repeated content during the week; lots of Countdown shows (they’re okay), lots of Monday Night Wars shows (they’re so so… though how the fuck did they get Vince Russo there?), and of course, lots of Total Divas… and I can honestly tell you that I’ve seen enough Total Divas to justifying my not caring about the Divas division. Seriously, there’s a reason why the NXT ladies get more TV time on that hour-long show; they’re simply more interesting characters. But there are some good stuff there… I’m actually enjoying that Legends House show, for example; probably the best piece of original programming they’ve created for the thing.
I suppose if there was anything I look forward to on this network channel, it’s Thursdays, where they show a bunch of classic content. Thus far, I was able to catch a few Clash Of The Champions, a couple episodes of Tuesday Night Titans and Monday Nitro… there’s even the oddball episode of Monday Night Raw (from the “bad” old days of 1996) show on there. Just last week, I caught a Starrcade (1989, I believe.) It is not the full-on library that I would’ve liked, but for the moment, this sates my wrestling fix quite nicely.
I’m liking the Network quite a bit and when there’s good stuff on there, it’s really good. And when there’s bad stuff, it’s really bad.
Which brings me to last Monday.
I’ll admit to having skimmed through the thing – a common thing for me to do these days since there was no way I was going to sit through three hours of tripe. There was the opening Sting promo and his encounter with Nipple H and McSon-In-Law that did nothing to get me excited for their match this Sunday… this match that is the Stinger’s first-ever WWE match, by the way.
I see a bunch of guys fighting over a ladder to reach a championship title belt that’s hanging high on a hook for whatever reason. Unless there’s a ladder match later on the show, there’s no reason for this to be here. Were there two IC title belts hanging above the ring of a Monday Night Raw before Wrestlemania X, where there was a title match?
I see TJ Wilson and Nattie Neidhart doing a Burger King promo… say, remember when D’Lo Brown and Mark Henry did a promo for McDonalds?
And then there was the final segment… the one that ended with the tug-of-war between Roman Reigns and WWE World Champion Abeyance. This is the shot that’s supposed to sell me on this main event for the granddaddy of them all. This is supposed to sell me on Wrestlemania… THIS.
Watching this RAW made me realize something that I didn’t think what cross my mind. It took me a couple days to reconcile this feeling, but it finally dawned on me. For the first time since I started following wrestling back in 1998, I am not looking forward to Wrestlemania. There is almost literally nothing on this card that has me excited or anything that I’d enjoy. And with the signing of Abeyance to a multi-year deal, I’m dreading how they’re going to book next year’s Wrestlemania, which takes place in a bigger stadium… no doubt bringing back all the old-timers to wrestle matches because they can’t be bothered to make the effort to make new stars… that’s plural, by the way.

Honestly, when Sunday rolls around, I’m more tempted to pull out my old VHS copy of the original Wrestlemania from 1985 and just watch that show instead. Because hey, that show had a much better build than this year’s fucking waste.

(2019 Update: You think it’s bad now?)

(2024 Update: It’ll get better eventually. Just give it another decade.)

RAW (Mar. 9th, 2015) – Where The Big Boys Play With Each Other…

A couple thoughts on last night’s edition of WWE Monday Nyquil (where the big boys play with each other!)

– For those clamoring for the Divas to get a chance, they got a two-minute match on RAW last night and it was the most underwhelming two minutes ever. Meanwhile, we’ve had the Bellas cut a promo that made me continue to be as invested in this match as I am in stocks… And then people wonder why we don’t give these Divas a chance. My guess is that they should get new women to perform for them; preferably those who have no qualms about not being featured on a rather worthless reality show.

– Every time I show signs of interest in a feud, WWE finds a way of killing it. Case in point, Paul Heyman’s reminder that his client, whose name I forget, beat the Undertaker… which served to remind everyone how worthless it is to have an Undertaker match after the fact. Also, it’s nice to see Bray Wyatt pleased that his rocking chair got struck by lightning. Suddenly, I’m not reacting anymore.

(Although credit where it’s due; I think it’s smart of them to keep ‘Taker off television until Wrestlemania 31 in order to keep the suspense of Taker’s condition. It almost harkens back to Wrestlemania XX when Undertaker was being re-introduced under his original-ish Deadman gimmick in his match, but only debuting at that pay-per-view’s main event match. Because Undertaker vs. Kane was the last match on the card, right? There were no others…)

– Randy Orton turns on Seth Rollins because Seth Rollins is stupid… almost as if that ball shot from Jon Stewart got to his brain.

Thank fuck for the WWE Network. That is all.

RAW (Aug. 4th, 2014) – Is It Wrong For Me To Say…

…that out of everything that took place on RAW a short while ago, the only two things that vaguely kept my interest are the Miz/Dolph Ziggler feud and the Rusev/Swagger feud? Is it wrong for me to say that I have more vested interest in these midcard feuds than what WWE is trying to push as the big matches?

Forgive if I seem to be in the minority in this regard, but I could honestly care less about Brock/Cena III. Brock is essentially the new Undertaker; you’ve seen one match, you’ve seen them all… which makes me less worried that a Brock Lesnar WWE Title win will result in WWE “special events” sporting main-events of bland, uninteresting MMA-style worked matches that only makes you wish you were watching a real MMA event instead. And again, I could give two shits about the Brie/Stephanie wankfest if I could be bothered to care… and I don’t.

Shit, this is making me want to watch Sharmell vs. Jenna Morasca.

And I’m not even sorry.

RAW (Oct. 7th, 2013) – Wait A Minute…

So Big Show is “fired” because he did what he was told… but isn’t his contract iron-clad, which means they can’t fire him? Or did someone find a strong enough blowtorch to cut through iron? I am confused… and quite honestly, I don’t care anymore.

But hey, John Cena is coming back to wrestle Del Rio for the World Title, so things aren’t so bad…

I guess I should pull out one of my stock images to sum up last night’s Monday Nitro…

RAW (June 24th, 2013) – Skipped Most Of Raw… Stayed For The Wrestling

Nothing exciting happened on RAW last night for the most part… more bickering McMahons, another John Cena promo nobody cares about, a Mark Henry promo, and announcing the folks in that MiTB match thing. Del Rio/Ziggler wasn’t a bad match, though, but the highlight was the main event match between Daniel Bryan and Randy Orton that ended the fucking show. Imagine that; RAW closing out with a honest-to-god wrestling match. And it was a good one too. Came in skipping the fluff, stayed for the wrestling, very happy with the match.

RAW (June 17th, 2013) – RAW is… Okay…

A few quick thoughts on last night’s RAW, which was actually quite watchable despite the constant McBullshit in effect. The less said about that, the better.

So we’re really going forward with the CM Punk vs. Brock Lesnar feud that we all knew was coming, right? You know what? I have no problem with this; unlike Brock vs. HHH times 3, this is a fresh match up and could possibly be a fresh encounter. It’s possible they might drag out for the Summerslam payday, which is a good idea. But I would suggest that Paul Heyman petitions for a match where STEEL STEPS ARE BARRED FROM RINGSIDE. Because Lesnar has trouble with them steps. Or something.

Meanwhile, it looks like Mark Henry’s next up to job to Vanilla Cena… I’m okay with this too, since Johnny C is done with Mark’s sloppy seconds. On the up side, I like the salmon blazer. It’s a good look on the guy.

Alberto Del Rio… the next generation of  insomnia relief! Yeah, not even “The Best In The World” (trademark) could save this one… although Randy Orton could come real close.

That’s about it. It was an okay show for the most part. Moved some angles forward, which was nice.

RAW (May 6th, 2013) – Meh…

How do you sell a PPV that one has no interest in watching?

– Have John Cena come out and call Skip Sheffield a coward and a whiner. Then have Skip declare the match to be a Last Man Standing match. Yeah, Skippy didn’t learn anything from Dave Batista’s own Last Man Standing match. That SO gets me to watch this PPV… not.

– Have Brock Lesnar show up at WWE HQ and trash the office of some guy named Paul Levesque (‘cuz it’s a shoot and all that) only to have HHH shrug the whole thing off mere minutes later. I SO want to get this PPV… not.

– Lame-Us and Mark Henry do a promo for their match or something… Unfortunately, I’m not that interested in the match-up. Not because of Mark, but because of Lame-Us.

Um… I got nothing else. Much to my surprise, they still haven’t fucked up The Shield… so that’s a good sign.

RAW (Apr. 15th, 2013) – Ryback Rules? Not With Those Ears…

After a hot crowd last week, we go back to a dead one this week. Did WWE hold a show in the Impact Zone without anyone knowing or what? Anyway, here are some quick thoughts;

– Despite having funny looking ears that keep me from taking the guy seriously, I actually enjoyed Ryback’s promo on John Cena. I also enjoyed how Ryback accused Johnny C of using Ryback for his own meticulous purposes and leaving him out to dry when Cena was top of the world. And I especially enjoyed how Ryback just let the Shield have their way with Cena. After what seems like an eternity, Ryback is starting to develop a character and I’m actually starting to get into him a little more. Too bad he’s going to be fed to Stupid Cena.

– Kofi Kingston defeated Antonio Cesaro to win the U.S. Title. This match was actually fun to watch and both guys put on a good show. Rare highlight to see a good match on RAW, but there you go. Definitely one worth tracking down.

– CM Punk walks away… implying retirement… wait, what? THAT’S how you’re writing him off… um, okay.

You know what? That’s not a bad idea. I’m gonna walk away now.

By the way, I give this show a 4/10.

RAW (March 11th, 2013) – This RAW sucks.

Quick notes:

This is the first time I’m watching RAW in HD and it looks about the same as an SD show. I honestly cannot tell the difference.

Figured they’d go with the whole Paul Bearersploitation thing this early on. But hey, I guess people have a reason to want Taker to kick CM Punk’s ass… and at the very least, Kane was upset by this sudden slight against his daddy… As for the match… I was just watching the PVR’ed show and I found myself wanting to go to bed. And on top of that, none of this made me give two shits about this match.

Speaking of matches I don’t give two shits about, Brock Lesnar agrees to give McSon-In-Law his win back. And he does this by beating up the Old Age Outlaws… wait a minute. I’m sorry, for a second there, I thought I was watching WCW.

And while we’re at it, let’s play a video package for a championship match I honestly don’t give two shits about.

So… the Bella Twins are back. Not sure if this is a good thing or not, but hey, I guess I can bring back that old running gag I used to do. Let me dust it off a bit… “Why do the Bella Twins still have jobs?”

Too soon?

You know… a thought just occurred to me. Since they’re calling Jack Swagger a “Real American” and all that, wouldn’t it make sense for him to come out to “Real American?” I mean, sure, it’d be a dickish move of sorts, but… my train of thought was just lost as I realized how utterly horrible Dutch Mantell’s beard look. I guess razors and trimmers aren’t “Real American” enough.

Fandango… Touts… Shitty movie trailers… these are all things that should be destroyed forever.

Good lord, this show sucks.

RAW (Feb. 25th, 2013) – Credit Where It’s Due… And HHH’s Spot

Well, this was certainly a show of noteworthy moments… some of which I can happily say was captured on JPEG for generations to re-live.

For shame. You never saw Shane-O-Mac wet himself like Hunter did…

For what it’s worth, no, I don’t care about this match. Hard to care when you know that the end result is McSon-In-Law getting his “much-needed” win back from Brock. That said, HHH may have lost his hair, but you could say that he’ll never lose his spot… because that’ll always be with him. And so will that shot.

Now, then, with that out of the way, let me give this show credit where it’s properly due: the main event match between John Cena and CM Punk – even with an outcome that a blind man can see coming – was probably one of the best matches to grace RAW in a good long while. It might be a stretch to say that, goddamn, THIS should have been the Mania main event for the title, but I guess Dwayne sells more.

Both guys busted their ass in the match and the end result shows. For all the flak Cena gets in regards to his limited moveset and less than decent output, there’re matches like this that prove the guy can most definitely go and deliver a top-notch match when paired with someone that compliments him. It’s often too bad that he’s a product of a company with a limited scope that decides to hold back on what he can really do rather than just let him have good matches.

And for what it’s worth, these two have crazy chemistry together. This match sorta proved that, but it’s no more truer than their Money In The Bank encounter in 2011. In an age where “epic” is tossed around all too often at inappropriate times, that match was one of the few occasions where the word fits. Because it was a great match with solid wrestling action that kept the audience on their toes and told a great story the right way.

This RAW match isn’t as good as that match… but it was still a great match. Kudos.
