RIP Mr. Fuji

Legendary wrestling manager and WWE Hall Of Famer Harry “Mr. Fuji” Fujiwara passed away this weekend at the age of 83. The exploits of Mr. Fuji as both a tag-team wrestler (five time tag champion in WWWF) as well as the manager of countless talents such as Demolition, Don Muraco, and Yokozuna were well outside of my exposure to the wrestling product, but even when I was oblivious to the product itself, he was always one of those names that would get brought up by other folks and one of those names that just stuck in my head even if I had no clue who he was. That doesn’t diminish his accomplishments and his legacy, nor does it taint my enjoyment of the various sketches he did with Muraco.

My prayers go out to his friends and loved ones.

About Discovery…

So, there’s a new Star Trek series coming out. It’s gonna be called Discovery, it’s gonna be on CBS Access, Bell Media, and Internation Netflix services, it’s due in early-2017, and it features the worst looking starship design in the history of the universe. Just the overall layout of the ship makes my head hurt and I doubt any considerable amounts of polishing will change my perspective on this.

In any event, some details have been revealed in regards to what the series is all about and I thought I take some time to discuss a couple of these points here. Nothing outlandish or deep; just some quick ramblings.
Here’s what we know, thus far.

1 – The series will take place ten years before Kirk took command of the USS Enterprise.
This somewhat intrigues me a bit; not necessarily because I was looking forward to any sort of series in this timeframe, but rather in how they’re going to try and recreate that kind of atmosphere in 2016 without making the stuff that was done in 1966 look dated and cheap. The 2-part “In A Mirror Darkly” episode did a fine enough job in 2004, but that was just using pre-existing sets and props. Not to mention, the timeframe would place this during Captain Pike’s tenure on the Enterprise, which had very different looking uniforms and even more primitive looking setpieces and props… not to mention paper print outs, which Enterprise never did, by the way… oh, god, I just realized that now.
2 – This will focus on a particular event heavily discussed in the Original Series but never really touched on.
No Romulan Wars, No Axe-Damar, no Kobayashi Maru. It’s something else… presumably the space age virus that made people forget what century they were in. I suppose this one deserves a bit of clarification of sorts.
In the early days of Star Trek, a lot of the familiar lingo and parameters had yet to be established. Whether it was a Federation or a Space Probe Agency, whether it was deflector shields or deflector screens. Photon torpedoes were originally nothing more than proximity phaser shots. The key point, however, is the time frame. Star Trek is set in the mid-23rd century and yet there would be episodes that would reference events taking place during then-present time as something that took place 200 years ago – the most famous of this being the episode “Space Seed” where the Enterprise uncovers a space module from that era (it’s the one with Khan.) This would either reference events taking place in the 21st century (then near-future) or Star Trek actually took place in the 22nd. That would get fixed up later, but the fact that episodes still use the 200 year reference is amusing in hindsight.
3 – The main character will be a Lieutenant Commander… with caveats. Whatever that means.
An interesting direction for sure… rather than focus on the captain or even the ensemble cast, the series will be told from the perspective of an underling. I don’t get the “caveats” bit, but I suspect that will be a thing to be elaborated on as time moves forwards.
4 – Yes, the cast will be racially diverse. Yes, there will be a gay character. And yes, more people care about these details than they actually should.
Trek casts have had some semblance of diversity, going back to the original series which had a black woman and an Asian dude. Doesn’t seem like much until you realize that it’s an upgrade over the original pilot which featured nothing but white people. And yet this is a point that is made into a big deal for… absolutely no reason?
Here’s the thing; I don’t care about the color of their skin, I don’t care about their sexual orientation, I just want a cast of interesting characters. All that other stuff is secondary to me and the fact that “our casts is gonna be racially diverse and we’ll even have a gay character” is an actual selling point of this series only goes to show how far we as a society have regressed. It seems to me that more people are focused on making casts diverse in ethnicity and sexual orientation than they are trying to tell a good story. And it is unfortunate that the people making new Trek has to resort to this blatant pandering to sell their show, especially considering that in the world of Star Trek, racial diversity and gay people aren’t something to be celebrated as a big deal; it’s something that is accepted as easily as the Earth being round.
The worst that could happen is that if this overhyped gay character turns out to be bland as shit, then people will constantly refer to that person as “the token gay character.” It’s happened in other contexts in the past. It can happen again in the future. Just focus on giving me great characters to care about and then focus on the details.
5 – There will be robots.
Yes! ROBOTS RULE!

Um… er, I mean… cool. We need more robots. Robots get no love.

That is all.

Meh Berthdhey

So as of this day, I am a year older. Something that is normally to be celebrated among family and friends with much fanfare, I suppose. I, on the other hand, will be working and will come home with a piece of cake at most to remind myself of the occasion. That, to me, is more than adequate for an occasion that I generally no-sell these days.

There used to be a time when I’d be looking forward to my birthday. The gathering of folks, the delicacies to be devoured, and of course, the presents to be had. Hell, there used to be a time when I’d be looking forward to a lot of birthdays this month. We’d attend all the parties, exchange gifts, and enjoy each other’s company.

Nowadays… not so much.

The last time I went to a birthday party was last year and while it was the same sort of party that we’d usually get, the vibe was different. Maybe it’s due to a lot of new faces, maybe it’s due to everyone being older and different from times past, but I felt a little… out of touch, I guess. I wasn’t enjoying myself as much as I’d used to. Probably because tastes have changed. I can’t say for sure.

The last time I had a genuine birthday party of my own seems like ages ago. The closest thing we’d get to that would be an annual dinner at the Casa Grecque with the folks and big brother. And that’s fine by me. I don’t even look forward to the gifts anymore; it’s mostly money and a couple birthday cards with well wishes. Not met with disappointment or excitement; just… thanks and best wishes. Not exactly a rousing welcome to another year on this earth.

And so I treat this as a day like any other. I work during the day (a rare occurance considering I usually go evenings), I head home for dinner, I do some stuff, and I go to bed. I’m sure there’s a cake somewhere in the middle and that’s about as far as I’m willing to go as far as personal affairs.

Also, this is pretty much how I think in the morning. Maybe it changes later on… then again, perhaps not. We’ll see.

Well, I’m off. Will catch you later.

TNA Under New (Not Quite) Management… Don’t Get Excited

Source here.

The news broke that Dixie Carter has stepped down as TNA President and Billy Corgan (the Smashing Pumpkins guy) will take over, while Dixie will be Chairperson. People are treating this like the greatest night in the history of our sport or whatever, but it’s too soon to tell whether this’ll make any difference in the long term.

At the end of the day, it boils down to whether people will care enough about TNA to start following it or not. If TNA could start getting their numbers (and their notability) up bit by bit, then Billy ends up looking like a million bucks. And if not, it’s not going to matter how many pumpkins get smashed or something.

On the bright side, people have stopped talking about TNA going out of business. So that’s something, I guess.

People Are Stupid (From Terry Goodkind’s Wizard’s First Rule)

“People are stupid; given proper motivation,
almost anyone will believe almost anything.
Because people are stupid, they will believe a lie
because they want to believe it’s true,
or because they are afraid it might be true.
People’s heads are full of knowledge, facts, and beliefs,
and most of it is false, yet they think it all true.
People are stupid; they can only rarely tell the difference
between a lie and the truth,
and yet they are confident they can,
and so are all the easier to fool.”

Random Thoughts On… Ryback

Source: http://rajah.com/node/52918

Skip “Ryback” Sheffield has just wished WWE the best in all his future endeavors and is going to launch a line of food products called Feed Me More. I wonder if he could actually use that sort of thing.

Gee, I don’t know. I should feel bad that another guy with potential to be a big star was misused or whatever the case may be, but for some reason, I could never buy into the guy and the mystique around him. Part of it was his Tough Enough stint, where he was eating loads of food. And then there are the ears.

Good lord, the ears.

Still, good on him for walking and doing what makes him happy. I wish him all the best.

Disney Games on GOG.com

For those who might not know, GOG.com has just posted three classic Disney games from the 16-bit days; The Lion King, The Jungle Book, and Aladdin. All three games are the original DOS versions running under DOSBox with slight tweaks that makes it easier to play this with a 360 controller (just use the Keyboard setting instead of the two Joystick settings) and yes, the Aladdin featured here is based on the Sega Genesis version from Virgin (the Super NES and Game Gear had entirely different games as far as Aladdin is concerned.)

Right now, I’ve only sampled a bit of Aladdin and for my part, it works just fine. Off the top, I like the MIDI soundtrack that feels like a step above what you got on the Mega Drive. However, I dislike the massive black border where all your stats are shown, as it covers a huge chunk of the screen and reduces overall visibility over the playfield.

So far, so good, though. Can’t complain all that much… yet.
