An Honest To God Reaction To Russo Nitro

So I got to bare witness to Vince Russo’s bold new vision for WCW… and it struck me as oddly familiar.

For those who don’t know, Vince Russo was the former head writer of WWF television. He also wrote some stuff in the WWF Magazines and his articles had the odd habit of GOING BONKO WONKO WITH THE CAPS whenever he FELT LIKE IT!

COME on, BRO!

Anyway, news broke that Vince Russo left WWF and decided to make the jump to WCW. When I first heard this, I already had an idea on what to expect, which was basically to turn WCW into a pale imitation of the WWF Attitude. Now let’s be fair. If you’re going to rip off Attitude, who better than the man who helped to create Attitude?

Anyone who knows me knows that I am a stalwart WWF fan and could care less about Wheel Chair Wrestling with its old guys as main event guys. That has been the big divide between the two companies. WWF had guys like Austin, Rock, HHH, and others banging out hot main events while WCW continues to shove old man Hogan and pals into the World title picture whether we’d want it or not. So a guy like Russo going into WCW, promising to focus on the younger stock is something I was looking forward to. Finally, less old guys and more focus on younger guys… finally, someone like Benoit will get a chance to shine.

Both Russo and the other guy started earlier this month. I sampled one of their shows and a lot of it is stuff that I’ve seen before when it was WWF, but with less known stars and… honestly, I think this shit is even worse than before.

The Phantom Menace… A Misfire?

You know… I’ve only been on the Internet for a little bit. I only get to go on for about half an hour because I don’t want to hold up the phone lines because going online makes lots of weird noises and results in people not able to reach you while you’re online. So I’m going about here and there, looking up stuff… and then I find a page somewhere (2024 Update: Link no longer valid) that talks about how the Phantom Menace is one of the worst things to happen to Star Wars.

I’m reading this page and I’m like “Really? Phantom Menace is bad? I thought it was a good movie. Did I miss something?”

I remember the first time I saw it in theatres with my older brother and we both thought the movie was fine. Seeing the Jedi in action was a bit of a treat, that Darth Maul dude was a wicked fighter, that podrace was a lot of fun, that Padme girl was pretty cute and a nice contrast from the queen with her fancy outfits and monotone voice, that Jar Jar is… well, okay, he was kind of annoying. And Kid Vader is kind of bad, but that’s fine because every kid actor is bad before they eventually get good.

I guess what I’m trying to say is that I actually liked the Phantom Menace… or at least, I remember liking the movie. The music was pretty epic; John Williams once again gives Star Wars another great score. And the movie – largely – is still fresh in my mind. That usually happens after I’ve watched a good movie or at least, one that I enjoyed a hell of a lot.

Maybe I’ll change my tune when the home video version is eventually released… but I never realized that you’re supposed to hate this thing. Oh well… maybe one of these days, I’ll get around to doing that. Right now, I’ve got other things to hate at the moment and a new Star Wars movie isn’t one of them.

Dave’s Old NES and Game Boy Reviews (The Complete Package)

(2026 Note: Dug from the archives of a couple hundred floppy disks, I bring to you some text from my very first website that was published way back in 1999. There’s no way in hell that I’m recreating the entire site for the full experience, but I can bring over the old reviews, which haven’t seen the light of day since mid-2000… ish. For the sake of simplicity – as well as some good ol’ fashioned housecleaning – all the reviews are compiled under a single post, but still divided up into different categories. If I can manage a makeshift navigational system so that you can jump over to these things much more easily, I’ll do that here. In the meantime, enjoy my earliest web postings or point and laugh. Either will do.)

Power Rangers

So I live in Canada, right? We have Canadian networks up here. One of those is a channel called YTV, short for Youth Television. Essentially the Canadian Nick. So they were announcing a new show called Power Rangers. And when I first heard the name, my first thought as a kid was “Okay, they’re doing a western cartoon of some kind.” Because, you know… the Lone Ranger, Texas Rangers, that’s what I usually associate with the word “ranger.” Something in a western setting. Never actually saw anything regarding the show until they aired a commercial when they showed clips of the morphing sequence, which in isolation, it’s just kids thrusting silver things in front of the camera and that’s it. Doesn’t tell you anything. I don’t think there was even sound.

So one day, the tv was on and by chance, there was an episode on screen and I can tell you which episode it was; it’s the one with the little kid wih the pig tails and the chunky chicken monster and it was not a good impression. The kid kinda ruins it for me – don’t know if it’s bad acting or just bad writing. Kid actors usually aren’t all that great, which is why the Phantom Menace… well, that’s another story, ain’t it?

So while the kid wasn’t great, I did like the other bits; the giant robots fighting rubber monsters, the spandex gimp suits, there was a bit of camp to it. Enough to like that I’d watch another episode or two whenever it popped up. And the more I watched of the show, the more I got into it. And just when I was getting into it and getting excited about new episodes coming about, YTV yanked it off the air… because of all the controversy with the violence and such that I never knew was a thing.

So my only means of watch Power Rangers was when the CBS station from Vermont that aired on channel 3 around these parts would air episodes on Sunday mornings. And they were episodes from the second season. 2nd part of the Mutiny, debut of Lord Zedd, Thunderzords, and hey, every Sunday morning, there’d be a new episode of Power Rangers. Can’t wait for Part 3 next week…

Except what happened was they only show episodes once a week, while Fox aired it several times a week and it’d be several episodes worth. So one week, it’s Part 2 of the season premiere storylinen and the next week, it’s an episode of a giant cactus monster or something. This was before internet was a thing, so there was no way to fill in the blanks other than the little pressers. There’d be interviews with half the cast and they’d talk about new Rangers. And a month in, that half the cast had a new White Ranger and it was Tommmy and how did that happened? Wait, who are these new guys? What’s this Tor Shuttle Zord thing? What the hell is going on?

Long story short, my folks eventually got one of those specialty cable boxes and one of the channels on that box was FOX, so now I had the chance to watch most of the Power Rangers shows that I missed out on. By this point, I had a pretty good idea as to the origins of Power Rangers; the relation with Super Sentai, the idea of changing suits every run, and that would eventually be a thing starting with Zeo where they made a big event out of it. And Fox became a regular channel and I continued watching Power Rangers, from Turbo, to Space, to Lost Galaxy, and such. I eventually got Internet access and learned more about the series lore and such.

Honestly, I miss the original Power Rangers crew. They were simplistic and stereotypical, but they were also cool and their suits were sweet and simple. People were hoping for the Dairanger suits to debut, but I never cared for those. To me, they looked like they were wearing white vests over colored spandex. Imagine how much of an upgrade that would’ve been.

“Rangers! Lord Zedd has sent out another horrible monster. You will need new armor to protect against his deadly attacks! Equip yourselves with the POWER VESTS and you’ll be protected.” Yeah, no thanks.

The ones that came afterwards? They’re okay. I kinda liked the Zeo suits. I didn’t care for the Turbo suits and the big changeover from Tommy and crew to the new guys… they grew on me after a while. And then Power Rangers In Space was a thing and I was disappointed that they spent most of the show on Earth… why called Power Rangers In Space if you’re not going to be in SPACE most of the time?

These are minor things. I still watch the shows. They’re still fun. They try to be more serious and the acting is a step above what came before. But at the end of the day, it’s still Power Rangers. It’s still cheese, but it’s good quality cheese. And I like me some good cheese.

Welcome To My New Place Online

Hello… and welcome to my new website.

I’m new to this web making thing and I’d like to share some thoughts to anyone who wants to read them. I talk about whatever piques my interest – whether it’d be video games, comics, wrestling, movies, or anything else. Sometimes, I’ll put little stories that I wrote. And I even have a couple games here and there.

So thanks for visiting the site and I hope to see you again.
