Smackdown (July 9th, 2019) – This Is How You Deliver Shitty Scripts And Raise False Hopes

So there’s a promo on Smackdown that was cut by Kevin Owens at the beginning of the program… something about talent being underused, too many McMahons on the Tee Vee, wanting change or that sort of thing… boy, does that sound familiar?

RAW (July 1st, 2019) – Stayed For Hour 1… Dropped Off At Hour 2… Take 2

Yes, your eyes do not deceive you. I did watch RAW this past Monday night… well, some of it, anyway.

Also, yes, your eyes do not deceive you. I’m doing another one of these today… because I accidentally deleted the old one. My bad. Fortunately, this is a much better write-up with a bit more inflections.

RAW (May 27th, 2019) – A Great Alternative Followed By Business As Usual

The Double Or Nothing write-up is due tomorrow… but it won’t be up at the stroke of midnight. But, rather, it’ll be the “main event” upload in a trifecta of uploads that will also include a belated game review as well as a something else.

The reasoning for this is two-fold; the first being that I’ve got quite a bit to say and I want to give the thing a couple final looks before posting. The second reason being that I was curious to see how your usual Monday night brand of “shit happening” would respond to a PPV offering from a new upstart rival promotion that, for all intents and purposes, has gotten rave reviews and praise.
I’ll go ahead and spoil things for you… they responded by teasing a fatal-four way match for their Red Belt championship and ultimately had the thing won by Baron Corbin, who was a replacement for AJ Styles who was forced out due to injury. And by the way, this took place in the dreaded “third hour” of RAW… the RAW that one Michael Foley said was going to be more gritty. If “more gritty” is code for “more Baron Corbin,” then it’s a good thing I skipped on this one.

Actually, you want to know how much of a non-issue this is to WWE? They opened the show with Kofi Kingston – your current WORLD CHAMPION, by the way – coming out with a plate of pancakes… this after a rival promotion held a PPV that featured a bloody brother vs. brother affair as well as the debut of a wrestler that was once one of their most prominent stars.

So there you have… business as usual, more Baron Corbin, and potentially another Bork Lazer title reign in the future because THIS TIME FOR SURE. But hey, if there’s one positive I could add, it’s that Bork Lazer with a Boom Box briefcase is comedy gold.
Whatever, man.

Holy Grail: The Search for WWE’s Most Infamous Lost Match (Bret Hart vs Tom Magee 1986)

Today was supposed to be a write-up on TNA’s own version of an ECW reunion from 2010, but this is much more important since it’s the long lost Bret Hart/Tom Magee match that is supposed to be this wondrous lost match that has been talked about and yet never seen.

This year’s Starrcast will have Bret Hart and Tom Magee get together on stage and talk about this match, but WWE, being the petty promotion that they are, decided to beat them to the punch and produce this thing. In this case, I’m not going to complain, but I’ve been interesting in seeing this match ever since it became more of a thing in recent years… and having it on the Network is the best way to do it.

RAW (May 6th, 2019) – And The Superstar Shakeup Continues…

I have some disturbing news for FOX: I DVR WWE programming. More often than not, I don’t watch the stuff, but I do DVR it. So that theory about your new show being DVR-proof… well, actually, that’s been shat out the window ages ago.

I’m not going to say a whole lot about this show… and truth be told, I’ve only seen the opening promo and the main event rematch between Kofi and Bryan. Everything else in between has been skippable for the most part and quite frankly, not all that interesting. I don’t care about the Lacey Evans thing, I don’t care about the Sami Zayn thing, I thought the business he had with Braun and the dumpster was fucking stupid without even watching it because everything Braun does these days is full of stupid, and, well, I guess Baron Corbin is still a thing they’re trying to push because of course he is.

But I do want to bring up this “Wild Card” thing, which apparently means guys from RAW and Smackdown can invade each others shows, thereby negating this whole Superstar Shakedown or whatever they’re calling it and rendering it a complete waste of time. If you have guys jumping between both shows on a regular basis, why even both with a bland sprit? And then they wonder why people are tuning out in droves.

I’ve said this on a board somewhere, but I’ll repost here because it’s worth mentioning: They need new creative, not new talent. Bottom line.

They already have all the talent they need. The problem isn’t with the talent. You can have all the talent in the world and have them appear on fifty shows a week, but if they’re subjected to the same lousy, dilapidated creative that has killed talent in the past, it’s not going to mean a damn thing in the long run. People need a reason to care about what’s going on screen; a reason to get emotionally invested in the storylines you’re presenting.

That’s not happening here and that’s why there’s been a steady decline over the years. Why should I care about brand splits, drafts, superstar shakeups, or whatever if you’re just going to come up with a stupid gimmick that renders all that irrelevant?

An entirely new creative approach with consistent storytelling (not to mention a bit of continuity) is what’s going to make things fresh, not a bunch of random new faces that are going to get lost in the shuffle because nobody can figure out what to do with them.

As for the Kofi/Bryan match… it was alright. Probably not as good as their Mania match, but that’s okay. For a RAW main event, it was perfectly acceptable fare. I enjoyed it for the most part.

Beyond that, however… no buys.

March To Wrestlemania X

So in addition to “The March To Wrestlemania IX” that I wrote about yesterday and didn’t too much of, WWE Network also made available “The March To Wrestlemania X” special, which was the last push to one of the better Wrestlemania shows to bare the name. One has to wonder if the build to No. 10 would be better than the build to No. 9.

Welp, only one way to find out, I suppose.

March To Wrestlemania IX (WWE Hidden Gem – 1993 TV Special)

So this popped up on the Network, as did the March To Wrestlemania X, which we’ll touch on tomorrow… because sure, why not? It’s the last stretch to Mania, so it fits with the times. Unfortunately, there’s three more days to fill and that means I need to fill it with other stuff. Oh well.

In any event, what “The March To Wrestlemania IX” entails is a taped 1.5 hour special featuring some brief recaps to the upcoming event’s marquee matches, a couple interview segments, and even a couple matches taped for the crowd. There’s also a couple bits with radio personality Rob Barlett being stuck in the Manhattan Center in one of those trademark WWE comedy routines that’s almost never funny.

As per usual, I offer general thoughts on each match and maybe a bit of a recap, but those expecting full-on reviews of these shows should probably look elsewhere. That’s not my thing.

Smackdown (March 26th, 2019) – Five Points Of Stuff

So, in celebration of Kurt Angle’s farewell tour that sees him have matches with guys that he faced in TNA, I decided to DVR last night’s Smackdown and gave it a watch. Unlike RAW, this was a much easier viewing experience at a mere TWO hours. However, I’ve little to say on this show beyond the four points that I’ll bring up after the break.

RAW (March 25th, 2019) – Joe Got His Headbutt Back

So in light of Kurt Angle taking on Samoa Joe for the final time, I decided to fire up the DVR and recording this week’s episode of RAW, so that I can sample that match. I didn’t watch the whole episode of course (perish the thought), but as per usual, I will offer five points of interest that came to mind when watching some (but not all) of this episode.

Smackdown (March 19th, 2019) – He’s A Loser! Yes, He Is!

Yeah, so I watched Smackdown via DVR. And well, let’s just call it one step closer to skipping Wrestlemania.

Was going to post a Slideshow Movie Review, but fuck it, I need to spend the one post on this.
