The complete “daily” Ataribox progress chart as depicted above, recorded up to just now, I made an effort to check the numbers at least once or twice a day. And whereas it took Ataribox an astounding single day to shatter the two million dollar mark in its crowdfunding, it took them two weeks to come close to the three million mark… though, I’d imagine that mark will be surpassed by Monday morning if not sooner.

Yes, I’m that specific.

And given that they’re limited on stock – stock for a product that doesn’t exist beyond a so-called prototype phase, don’t forget – I’d be (mildly) surprised if this hits four million by the time this whole campaign is done, let alone reach the Ouya amount of eight and a half million. The two occasions where the number has actually DROPPED also leads me to believe this isn’t going to be entirely smooth sailing.

Suddenly, I no longer have the urge to do a video on this Ataribox thing… and it’s too bad. I had a fun little idea to play around with regarding stretch goals and things of that nature, as well as toss out a couple potential ideas on how to make this thing work, but honestly, folks? I’d much rather do another E3 video.

Bleh.

Ataribox Trailer Features Illegitimate Gameplay Footage

Source Article here.

I’m a little late to the party and quite honestly, this revelation or pointing out of the obvious (if you prefer) may either sour you on the project going forward or it will not affect you in the slightest. If there is one thing that I’ve learned, it’s that that one game being played that isn’t Tempest or an old Atari game is apparently a remake of the 2600 classic Yars’ Revenge.

Mind you, a Yars Revenge remake from 2012. A remake designed for mobile devices and web browsers… as demonstrated here in this very old blog. Hell, you can play that very same Yars Revenge remake from 2012 featured in that Ataribox trailer right here… provided you have a good working version of FLASH!

Soooo… we’re about a week in, the campaign has garnered less than three million, and there’s already potential cracks that may lead some to believe that this thing might not be all it claims to be. You can tell how inspired with confidence I am at the moment.

So add another bit to the big ol’ Ataribox video… and maybe let’s do that joke video along the way if possible.

For Those Curious… The Ataribox Numbers

Ataribox’s IndieGoGo campaign has so far accumulated $2.7 million, just shy of surpassing the 3 million mark… well, that’s rather anticlimatic considering the somewhat strong start. However, if recent Youtubers are to be believed, apparently Ataribox might not be on the up and up. I’d elaborate on this further, but I’m still trying to find a source for this information before I comment. If that’s the case, then… welp.

Still, I might have a little fun with this thing via a video this week, while I save the other video that I wanted to get out for a while now for when the campaign terminates at the end of the month (or earlier). I thought this was going to be a quick thing and it turns out to be a potentially huge video that I need to split in half.

As a bonus, I thought of the idea to try and keep track of this campaign’s progress, by recording how much it made at what times. Stuck with the idea last weekend for the most part before I promptly forgot about it, because apparently I had better, more important things to do during the week like produce a stool test or something.  So this is what I recorded:

June 02 09:50 a.m. EST: $2,327,376
June 02 04:14 p.m. EST: $2,327,376
June 02 05:25 p.m. EST: $2,367,076
June 03 11:07 a.m. EST: $2,410,371
June 03 06:45 p.m. EST: $2,445,373
June 04 12:33 a.m. EST: $2,461,554
June 07 10:01 a.m. EST: $2,764,620

As you could probably tell, it wasn’t a huge, colossal leap and I was so certain that this thing would surpass 3 million by this point that I was ready to announce that there were new paddle controllers on the way. So maybe that gag video might be worth a damn after all.

As for that other piece of news… well, more on that later, I suppose.

Don't Call It A Comeback

Tomorrow, Atari SA launches its IndieGoGo pre-order campaign for its mysterious Ataribox VCS system. And if there is one thing that I am hoping will come out of this initial campaign, it’s that it answers this one simple question that can only be summed up in the best way possible.

“What the fuck are you trying to sell me, Atari?”

I’ve been holding off on the Rambles video on Ataribox for the simple reason that I wanted to wait until the campaign kicks off (or gets shitcanned again, whichever comes first) and perhaps reveal something a little more substantial about this upcoming project that has been a lot of hype over a whole lot of nothing. To say that there is nothing to get excited about over Ataribox would be stating the obvious and to compare Ataribox to other failed ventures such as the Ouya or the Gamestick would be beating a dead horse; a genre that Atari SA knows all too well, having done just that with the Atari brand since the dawn of time.

Nonetheless, I remain somewhat curious to see whether this thing will be worth the hype. Initial impressions based on what little info was made available was not very encouraging and any sort of ridicule that this has garnered is (sadly) well deserved, but maybe the next info drop will yield something more substantial that would present this Ataribox project as a potential alternative to the currently stagnant video game console scene rather than another in a long line of failed microconsole gimmicks that people are hoping would be viable because it has a familiar brand behind it.

Anyway, we’ll see what happens tomorrow and maybe I’ll make a video about it. Or maybe I’ll just put the dog to sleep.

Remember Ataribox? Yeah, me neither…

(Quick update: Here’s a press release. A video is forthcoming.)

Anyone remember Ataribox? That new micro-console thing from Atari that was going to have a Kickstarter but then doesn’t have a Kickstarter? Yeah, me neither. But apparently it’s back in the news for some reason and now it has a new name; the Atari VCS.

But we already have a VCS. We don’t need another one.

For those who aren’t aware, the VCS refers to the Atari 2600’s original name when it was released in 1977. In fact, the system was only referred to as the 2600 when Atari released the ill-fated 5200 Supersystem. Even to this day, there are still people who will refer to the 2600 by its original name.

Anyway, in addition to a new name change, there’s also a new preview image, showing off not only the console, but also its two controllers. On the right, you have the Classic Controller that’s modelled after the original VCS joystick. And on the left, you have the Modern Controller, which looks the stock gamepad you get these days, only with an orange thumbstick and a shitty D-Pad.

Now Atari says there’re more details to come in April and for anyone who cares about this thing, this should probably get you excited for some reason. Personally, I’d be more interested in the reactions from the community than I am the actual console. I’ve already shared my piece months ago and I’ve seen nothing that would change my stance on the matter.

Engadget has (slightly) more details here.

On a sidenote, I’m currently recovering from a cold; hence the lack of videos. I’m hoping to get the last of the Mega Man stuff out by the end of the week, but I don’t want to jinx it out of fear that I might catch something else along the way.
