WWF In Your House #26: Rock Bottom

“The Rock’s birthday is May 2nd, you stupid son of a bitch!”
-The Rock

Today is the Rock’s birthday, you stupid son of a bitch. And to celebrate the occasion, I decided to check out the only PPV named after the People’s Champ – the December 1998 edition of the WWF In Your House PPV series dubbed, appropriately enough, Rock Bottom. Though to be fair, this show isn’t as bad as I’m making it sound from the get-go; there’s a couple fun bits here and there, but I think it’s safe to say that this isn’t exactly one of the finer moments of the much-vaunted WWF Attitude Era.

Anywhoo… let’s give this thing a look, jabroni.

ECW One Night Stand 2005

The era of extreme is revived for one night only… well, two if you count the Hardcore Homecoming show that took place the night before, but that’s not the focus of today’s post.

No, we’re focusing on the show that became a thing because WWE had put out a Rise And Fall Of ECW DVD documentary that was highly regarded by fans and apparently, that prompted them to do their own little ECW reunion show. Even going so far as to book it at the Hammerstein Ballroom arena and giving it ECW-like graphics.

RAMBLEMANIA 35

So it’s a history making night at Wrestlemania… depending on who you ask.

To WWE, all its contracted talent and employees as well as the most diehard of diehard fanbase, it was the event where women took part in the closing main event spot for the first time ever. It was the event where Kofi Kingston became the first black man to hold the prestigious WWE World Heavyweight Championship (assuming you don’t count the Rock, of course.) It was the event where Kurt Angle and Dave Bautista had their final matches as professional wrestlers and WWE Superstars.

To everyone else, it was the longest fucking sports entertainment show in the history of mankind… no, not THAT Mankind.

While I had not been excited to watch Mania this year – primarily due to the booking and storytelling being somewhat lackluster in getting me excited for this show – I was able to catch the first couple hours or so live before dozing off to bed… and then a week and a half would pass before I’d get around to watching the rest of it. And even then, it took me a couple days to get through the rest of it because… well, let’s just get into it.

I’m not going to touch on the pre-show because I generally don’t watch the pre-shows. But for anyone who cares, Carmella won the women’s geek battle royal, Braun Strowman won the men’s geek battle royal, we got a new Cruiserweight champion in Tony Nese, and apparently Curt Hawkins went from “guy who lost 2 billion matches in a row” to RAW Tag-Team Champion with Zack Ryder, as they defeated previous champs The Revival for the belts. Make of that what you will because I’ve no real thoughts on the matter.

BLP’s Adventures In Wrestling

So the last time I watched a Black Label Pro show, it was 2018 and Bryan Alvarez has yet to acquire his gold boat. Several months later… well, he got a gold mic somewhere along the way… but the boat was nowhere to be found. On the flip side, I actually did enjoy the BLP Jam show and wanted to make a note to catch up on other BLP shows, notably the one with the Alvarez/Marko Stunt hoss match… which we’ll touch on down the road.

In the meantime, let’s check out this Adventures In Wrestling show that took place during Mania weekend and… well, this wasn’t a jam, that’s for sure. Honestly, if this show had been nothing but running commentary over a static image of F4W icon G. Raffe, it probably would’ve been better off.

Regardless, here’re my quick thoughts for those who care.

NXT: Takeover New York 2019

So after what seemed like an eternity through the fifty circles of Hell… it felt like fifty circles, at least… I was able to finish my long-rambling Ramblemania write-up. Unfortunately, you won’t be reading it until this Saturday, so in lieu of that, I decided to watch a couple other shows that took place during that weekend and do quick write-ups for them. We’ll look at a couple this week before Ramblemania 35, but others will pop up along the way when I’m short on material.

So we begin with the NXT Takeover show from Brocolli Center in New York. This took place on a Friday, so as to not interfere with the ROH/NJPW G1 show from MSG… which I have NOT seen, but have heard mixed reactions to.

TNA Impact Bonus DVD

Since today’s video will be showcasing the TNA Impact video game, I might as well talk about the bonus DVD that the game came with at the time. It’s essentially a compilation disk of five gimmick matches from throughout TNA’s history featuring some of the stars showcased in the video game in question.

WWE Judgment Day 2008

“HHH retains the title.
There’s still no World champ.
Mickie James kept her belt – no one cares.
Cena wins yet again.
Lather, rinse, repeat.”
DTM, May 19th, 2008

In recent weeks, I’ve been going through the old blog posts from the old blog and sometimes I see nuggets such as this used to describe entire three hour show. For some reason, this one blurb has compelled me to load up this particular show on the Network… whether that was the original intent, I’ve long since forgotten.

Regardless, let’s take a trip down memory lane because I honestly don’t remember this one. My guess is I didn’t care for this one back then. Let’s see if that’s still the case.

WWE Crown Royal (2018 Saudi Show)

Happy April Fools, everyone. Let’s celebrate the occasion with a string of silly, stupid posts every hour. And we’re going to start with my musings of the Gooker Award winning extravaganza from Saudi Arabia, WWE Crown Royal!

WWE signed a deal with Saudi Arabia to produce two PPV events per year at the country for the next decade or so for a shitload of money. A shaky proposition on its own due to the country’s restrictions flying in the face of WWE’s so-called progression with its #LOLWomensEvolution and its “diversity” checklist… or whatever. But then Saudi officials got a journalist assassinated and all of a sudden, this show was becoming less attractive by the second to the point where the crowd actually booed the Undertaker during a promo when he mentioned the name of the event.

Pressure mounted all around for WWE to cancel the event and break their deal, but ultimately the company went ahead with its plans, citing that they wanted that sweet, sweet, Saudi money and they were willing to offend everyone to get ahold of that cash. To many, this was appalling behavior that didn’t deserve to be rewarded. To me, it’s par for the course with WWE, who isn’t above being tasteless and tactless in order to make a quick buck and try to remain relevant.

So… yeah, I didn’t watch this show back then. Set during the day so I had better things to do and no leg injury to keep me in bed, not to mention the allure of watching old men wrestle in the main event had no appeal to me in the slightest. However, because I lost a bet, I had to watch this show and record my thoughts on it to digital media. And so here we are…

Unfortunately, my thoughts were briefer than the show itself.

WWE Fastlane 2019

So here’s the deal… I watched this show over a span of three days because I no longer have the patience to sit through a ten-hour PPV. Wrestlemania might be the one sole exception if there is a party I can attend, but even that might be a stretch. So I watch this show and it feels like a complete waste of time. This isn’t a knock of the quality of the show, but rather just the “nothing happened” atmosphere that resonated throughout the show.

WWF Fully Loaded 2000

Bit of a heads-up before we begin: the weekly Classic Wrestling Musings are going to take a break for a couple weeks. Reason being there’s going to be a week’s worth of the things before Mania hits and I’d much rather focus on those than anything. After that, it’ll resume around mid-April.

With that said, let’s dwell into WWF Fully Loaded 2000, from the month of July 2000, during the peak years of the Attitude Era when things got really, REALLY good. I don’t know why I picked this show above all others; all I know is that I just felt like it and that’s how we’re rollin’ rollin’ rollin’ rollin… wait, we’re not at that point yet.
