COMIC REVIEW – Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Saga (Hamilton Comics 3-issue miniseries)

Hamilton Comics’ final Power Rangers foray before losing the license to Marvel Comics was a three-issue retelling of the Power Rangers story in a somewhat abridged format. And in a pleasant change of direction, this is the only series in the Hamilton Comics period that sticks with the same art team. And it’s probably the best artwork that this run has seen; managing some approximations of the main characters while also re-interpreting the classic monsters to stuff that… don’t anything like the source material. Hell, Rita is still in purple rather than her usual brown rags, but whatever. They saved their best artists for this final hurrah and I couldn’t be happier… even if it meant the other book had to suffer as a result.

It’s funny that out of all the Hamilton stuff that I’ve read thus far, their best story is an abridged retelling of what happened on the TV show, right up to the White Ranger being introduced. While it’s not a point-for-point adaptation – the story as well as the artists take liberties with the material – it does boil down the major plot threads; the forming of the team, the introduction of Green, the introduction of Zedd, Green’s final battle and transition to White. This is basically an elongated version of the two-page quickie origin story that they’d use to have back in the old days where they just show the major points and move on. That’s what this was and it works for the time allotted.

Saga ended after three issues, but was intended to be a full six-issue miniseries. According to Don Markstein, the idea was to introduce his own plot to the framing story involving Jim, the business owner whose warehouse is constantly under attack. This would lead to him starting a campaign to defame the Rangers;  a campaign that would’ve gained traction as time went on. It’s actually a very intriguing plot point for a story. It’s too bad it never got that far.

Who knows how the story would’ve played out if the series had been allowed to continue its run unabated? Regardless, what you have here in Saga is a solid abridged recapping of the first two and a half seasons of MMPR that’s pretty accurate to the source.

A fine note to end the Hamilton era on.

COMIC REVIEW – Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #4 (Hamilton Comics – Vol. 2)

The final issue of Hamilton Comics’ second miniseries ends on a bit of a whimper, with two underwhelming stories.

The first, “The Lost Ranger”, features Rocky getting amnesia and forgetting that he’s a Ranger… it’s the classic trope of someone forgetting who they are and relearning it before story’s end… but because the story is short, the way Rocky gets back his memory is underwhelmingly goofy; he trips. Oops. Lame.

The final story, “Footloose”, has the Rangers fighting off a bunch of sentient Putty boots… it is perhaps the single most stupidest thing I’ve read in this Hamilton run and it’s probably very fitting that they saved the dumbest idea for last. Not exactly an inspired end to this run.

Both stories are drawn by Gray Morrow, yet both have drastically different styles. The first being a more traditional comic book style that looks pretty good and the second boasts the semi-realistic, detailed look that feels off. Also of note, the Rangers lack the chest logos here, which is more in-line with the actual show, but that sort of design choice has been a thing for most of the stock illustrations.

And so ends Hamilton Comics’ contribution to Power Rangers… well, there’s still the MMPR Saga miniseries, but since that’s mostly a recap of the show, we won’t count that. For now, Hamilton was done concocting new adventures and that honor would go to Marvel.

COMIC REVIEW – Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #3 (Hamilton Comics – Vol. 2)

And we’re back to the two story format for the last couple issues… oh well, it was fun while it lasted, I suppose. On the bright side, however, both stories are illustrated by Sparky Moore and it’s probably his best work in these books if I’ve been completely honest. If only he had been available for the final issue, but that’s another story.

Anyway, the first story is called “Bad Attitudes”, where Baboo concocts a ‘tude tick that bites all the teens and gives them bad attitudes, causing them to bully people, kick stuff, and not care about monster attacks… all while in their suits. We learn a few things in this story; apparently, the suits are machine washable and the citizens of Angel Grove apparently have really short-term memories to forget something as vital as the Rangers roaming around without their helmets and stuff, acting like total fucking delinquents. When you can set aside the glaring questions that this thing raises, it’s a silly little story that has a bit fun for a bit. I didn’t mind this one. This was fine.

The other end of this book gives us “Gray Skies.” An interesting concept that sees Lord Zedd unleashing a swarm of mini flying elephants to terrorize the city… and the Rangers counter by sending bats from a cave after them. I like this story because it’s thinking outside the box. Rather than fisticuffs leading to the eventual Zord fight, there’s an inventive and believable solution to this whole ordeal. Most of all, it’s something that probably wouldn’t have been possibly on TV without making it look really cheap, so kudos on producing a comic story that works best as a comic story.

Hey, if the run ended here, it’d be a hell of a way to end it on… alas, there is only one more issue left.

A Digression Into Nerd Clone 17’s Wolverine Review

Been a while, hasn’t it? Well, I have this sitting on the draft table for far too long. Sooo….

Today, we’re going to be looking at a “review” of Wolverine for NES done by some guy under the YouTube name of NC17Productions. Most of you might already be familiar with this guy’s work via Asalieri’s two videos where he debunks some complaints in a couple videos. Well, I’m going to do the same thing with this review.

A couple quick thoughts on the game itself; despite having the LJN Brand of Death and some questionable gameplay issues, Wolverine is actually a fairly good platformer for the most part with good controls and fairly nice graphics. The music in this game is also a highlight despite having too few tracks in general. For the most part, I found the game enjoyable as a kid and even today, I still think it’s a fairly decent addition to the NES library…

…this guy seems to have missed the point here. So… I might drop a couple quick comments here and there. Let’s begin.

Martha Hart sues WWE… Again.

(2021 Update: Yeah, so this has aged poorly.)

So yeah, Martha Hart is suing WWE again. It took me a while to figure out that she was Owen’s widow. Apparently she’s out of money from the last settlement she had ten years ago, so back to the well she goes.

I figured that if she were to sue because of WWE’s continued usage of Owen footage, she would have done it years ago when the Bret Hart DVD came out.
But whatever. I’m not a grieving widow who doesn’t want anything to do with the wrestling business and yet married a guy who was part of a huge wrestling family.

This family, sometimes… I just don’t know.

More E3 Recaps

Saw a couple more videos from other people, here are some brief thoughts:

– So I saw a couple of Spoony’s E3 videos where he rambles about a couple games he saw. Last time I checked, this guy was an entertainer too and yet he’s not in his angry reviewer mode. In fact, I think his “fake anger” moments in this video is more believable and feels more legit than all three days of the AVGN combined. He’s only got the first day, along with an hotel video and an interview regarding Fable 3, but other than that, it’s a nice E3 presentation.

– Speaking of which, I saw a good chunk of Screwattack E3 videos and coverage comprises a brief video for each game they saw. Who appears in some of these videos? James Rolfe… as James Rolfe. This leads me to believe that the decision to have him parade as the AVGN on Gametrailers is a GT decision. But I’m not jumping that boat. Only the boat that says the AVGN E3 videos suck. It’s true, it’s true.

– Just out of curiosity, decided to venture to Gottgame and check out the lone E3 video featuring the Irate Gamer… watch Chris fumble his lines and Bore me to tears. Just about the only thing that remotely peaked my interest was the brief mention of a new Kid Icarus game on the 3DS. Other than that, more crap about the Old Republic that I could’ve gotten from a more reputable source. Sorry, guys.

– The only E3 “report” that I’ve enjoyed tremendously was Classic Game Room. And say what you will about the guy’s reviews being too monotone, but I think Mark did an amazing job with some of these videos. Oftentimes, you forget you’re watching an E3 report and instead are interacting with him on some video conversation. The guy seems like a pretty cool guy to hang around with and his E3 videos exude that kind of friendly atmosphere. Checks out as much as possible, but focuses on some of the “smaller” stuff while asking about flamethrowers and Cosmic Carnage. Thank you, sir.

And that’s it.

The Nerd Tries His Hand At E3 Recapping… He Fails.

For the past couple years, James Rolfe has been going to E3 along with the Screwattack crew and had partaken in some videos covering the event.

This year, a decision was made to have James Rolfe do a couple quick E3 videos… as the Angry Video Game Nerd.

God shoot me.

Here are a few quips:

“I’m surrounded by electronic video games. I didn’t even know they still made video games.” You know, I think James Rolfe is an exceptional entertainer at times, but that has to be one of the stupidest lines I’ve ever heard. Really? You didn’t know they still make video games? This is bordering IG-levels of incomptence.

So he shows off the line for the Nintendo 3DS and whines about how he’s not standing in line. Not yet… I think he’s on cruise control with this. At least when Screwattack showed off the long-ass line to try out the Wii a few years back, it was mildly entertaining. But the Nerd just points to a crowd and whines about not wanting to wait… What’s the point?

He shows off Donkey Kong Country Returns… which is actually the first time I’ve heard of it. And from what I can tell, it looks really nice and similar in style to the SNES games of old… but much cleaner and more vibrant.

“Since when did Diddy Kong use a fucking jetpack?” What does it matter? Since when did Mario wear a Penguin suit?

The last one he played was Donkey Kong 64… yeah, so? That was my last one too before the series turned to Mario-Minis and Kongo Bongo games.

“Does anybody know what a Skyward Sword is?” Um… yeah. It’s a sword… that’s skyward.

The Nerd would like to see a dark grim-and-gritty Zelda game… at this point, I would like to kick his head in. The urge is rising. You know, Hudson and Konami tried that with Bomberman a few years back and that game was FUCKING HORRIBLE.

Kirby: Epic Yarn… wow, now that’s a rather neat concept, judging from the screenshots. But why spend 20 seconds on the damn name? Are you kidding me? Really? Ladies and Gentleman, we have dipped far below IG-levels of stupidity… I mean, that barrier has been penetrated. Un-fucking-believable.

And that’s just Day 1. I tried watching his other two E3 videos and I just want to shoot myself after doing so. This is absolutely horrendous. Pure donkey shit is what I’d call it. Unbelievable.

You want an entertaining E3 overview? Check out Classic Game Room. Mark does awesome stuff… and has unhealthy obsessions with Cosmic Carnage and flamethrowers… but I actually enjoyed that.

Okay, okay… it should be noted that in addition to the AVGNE3 Trilogy of Shit, James also appeared in a couple of the Screwattack recap videos where he appears as himself and not the Nerd persona. Why he couldn’t have done this (be himself and not the fucking overrated Nerd) with the GT videos – I don’t know… maybe it was a GT decision. Still kinda stupid.

But yeah… Classic Game Room.

Cena Wants His Win Back… From Daniel Bryan Danielson

According to this page at Inside Pulse Wrestling, WWE Champion John Cena sent a series of Twits expressing his wanting Daniel Bryan Danielson back in WWE… presumably to get back for this kick he got. Whether this is legit or work, it’s nice to see Cena’s voice tossed out there and perhaps maybe… JUST maybe… he isn’t simply a corporate shill after all.

Then again, this could all be an elaborate work.

COMIC REVIEW – Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #2 (Hamilton Comics – Vol. 2)

The second issue of this second miniseries from Hamilton Comics is the only issue in this run to feature one full-length story as opposed to being split into two stories. Unfortunately, even in this format, “The Yesterday Bomb” is a story that still feels rushed.

The plot of the book is fairly straightforward; Lord Zedd concocts a bomb that sends the Power Rangers and their Thunderzords back to the age of the dinosaurs and now they have to find a way to make it back and stop Zedd’s evil robot to wrecking havoc on the city. In theory, it’s not a particularly bad story and does have the makings of something that could’ve been spread out over a couple issues. In execution, the plot does come off as feeling a bit rushed and while I don’t care for the decompressed style of storytelling in comics that span several issues, there are times where I wished they had turned this into a two-part story.

Al Bigley returns for penciling duties while Sparky Moore handles the inking. I honestly wished that it were the other way around simply because Moore is the better of the two artists. A lot of the complaints that I’ve had with Bigley’s past work in these books are prevelant here; everything comes across as hastily drawn and a bit of a mess. Somehow, the art in this issue might actually be worse than Bigley’s previous outings, with one frame in particular depicting Billy as an older gentleman rather than a smart looking teen. I want to say that this book either predicted or inspired the means by which to write off David Yost from the series in the future, but that’d be giving this book too much credit. But, yeah, the art here is pretty bad; quite possibly the worst I’ve seen.

All in all, The Yesterday Bomb is a neat premise on paper, but the execution leaves much to be desired.

Daniel Bryan Danielson fired for choking some guy…

I wake up this morning and I find out that Daniel Bryan Danielson has been fired because he choked WWE announcer Justin Roberts with his tie during that whole skit. Yeah, that’s got to be the stupidest thing I’ve heard all day. Really, if the crack WWE management found some guy getting choked with his tie to be graphically violent, then they wouldn’t have spent a whole five seconds watching the guy get choked. They would have cut to something else. Instead, they lose one of the better workers in that whole NXT faction.

Remember that feeling I had about how WWE was going to somehow fuck up this goldmine they have going on? Well, this isn’t exactly that, but it’s a possible sign that they may very neuter this Invasion. It’s unfortunate that such a realistic (read: compelling) angle had to be toned down because someone might not be . And yet twelve years ago, WCW will pull off similar stuff without much repercussion and that was also something of a PG product.

Oh wait…
