Moar Ramblings About Impact

The following is a transcript of a segment from Episode #70 of the DTM-Cast, slightly adjusted for text format.

A couple weeks ago, Impact Wrestling has finally dumped the much-maligned TNA moniker and pretty much dumped the prior management for its idiotic decision-making and things of that nature. So what we’re going to get from here on out is a new product that’s pretty much the same as the old product. A Global Force of wrestling, if you wheel… or actually, don’t wheel. It’s not worth it.

Why I Don’t Mind The Star Wars Trilogy 1997 Special Editions

1997 was the 20th Anniversary of Star Wars and Lucasfilm had a novel idea for a celebration; re-releasing the Star Wars trilogy for theatrical release and updating them with some new scenes and special effects. In the case of Star Wars, it was the restoration of a lost encounter between Han Solo and Jabba The Hutt… and two seconds of additional footage between Han and Greedo that has been derided for years on end. In the case of Jedi, it was new music to accommodate a couple extra bits, including our first canonical look at the imperial planet of Coruscant, which was something only touched on in novels and computer games.

Random Thoughts On… The Order

Every once in a while, I get together with a bunch of friends and talk over coffee. Nothing special, just talking among friends about stuff that interest us.

One of the things we talked about recently – ever so briefly, mind you – is the Order, a film that has been teased on Facebook and other places and is due to be released somewhere down the line. And the whole selling point that it features a bunch of Power Rangers alumni getting together to make a movie that seems to be militaristic with some martial arts stuff thrown in for good measure. It looks cheap, probably because it is. They got a crowdfunding thing lasting two months and there’s a bunch of perks to it for people who care. In any event, someone brought up, we touched on it for a bit, and  a short while later moved on to something else.

Look, here’s the deal with the Order and I will put it to you as bluntly and as straightforward as I possibly could; I don’t care. It’s not a project that interests me. It’s not a project that appeals to me. It’s not something that I’d feel compelled to watch or support. It is not, as the campaign page so boldly and so fragrantly claims, the Power Rangers reunion you’ve been waiting… it’s just a movie with a bunch of former Power Rangers actors. The two things are not in the slightest bit alike because the two things are completely different things.

I think it’s cool that they got a whole bunch of former Ranger actors in there, but the fact of the matter is it’s not Power Rangers. it’s this other thing. if it was former Ranger actors coming back as part of a Power Rangers special episode or event or whatever the case may be – maybe something similar to THAT sort of subject matter – I might be more interested in that sort of thing. But that’s not what it is; it’s the Ranger Alumni take on the Expendables… and quite frankly, that doesn’t interest me in the slightest.

Best of luck to the folks behind that movie; wish nothing but the best for them. But as far as I’m concerned, it’s not the “reunion” I’ve been waiting for. It’s just another thing that I’ve no interest in. And that’s all I have to say about that.

* For those wondering, this post doesn’t get the Power Rangers tag because it has nothing to do with Power Rangers.

Every HHH Wrestlemania Main Event Sucked

Say what you will about Triple H, but the guy is a major player in WWE. Multi-time World Champion, main eventer, sometimes charismatic guy, head of NXT and various development projects, and one of the smartest, hardest working dudes in the business. That having been said, when it comes to being the main event of Wrestlemania… this is where the multi-time WWE World Champion falls a bit short and since we’ve had another in a series of them, I’d figure this would be the best time to talk about every main event HHH has partaken in at the Showcase Of The Immortals and why they suck.

For the purposes of this write-up, the main event of Wrestlemania refers to the closing match on the card. I’m not counting so-called “main events” that take place during the middle of the card or anything of the sort. For all intents and purposes, the main event of Wrestlemania is the last match on the show.

Also, for the purposes of this write, this is NOT a history of HHH’s Wrestlemania matches; only his main events, so no mention of the farce that is his World title defense against Booker T at Mania 19 with the racist storyline. To be completely fair to Hunter, he’s had some good Mania matches when not scratching that last match – his match with Undertaker at Wrestlemania X-Seven and the one with Daniel Bryan Danielson at Mania 30 are top-notch wrestling matches worth of the Show Of Shows.

Ghostbusting 2.0

Been sitting on this for a while… and well, here’s my five cents on the matter.

So let me preface this by saying that as far as the first two Ghostbusters films are concerned, I kinda like ’em. They’re not films that I would hold on any high pedestal like most older folks would, but they’re funny films, they’re quotable, they’ve got memorable moments and characters, they’re well made films with some wonderful visual effects, all the usual buzzwords you’d associate with much beloved classics of the era. And of course, there’s the timeless catchy wonderfully 80s theme song by the legendary Ray Parker Jr. Suffice it to say, Ghostbusters is a cherished franchise by those who grew up during its prime years, some clearly more devoted than others.

EGM #100’s Top 100 Games Of All Time – An Extended Lookback

November 1997 saw esteemed video game magazine Electronic Gaming Monthly release their one hundredth issue. And to celebrate the occasion, they concocted a Top 100 list comprising their favorite games and calling them “the best of all time.” But are they really that?

A bit of context is needed; this list was put back in 1997. That’s almost two decades ago and many other games have come along that deserve to lay claim to “the best of all time.” However, I was around in 1997. I know games back in 1997 and I still have some notes about whether I feel this list held water. This is more of a fun lookback than any “critical” observation. Who knows? I might pull out that 200th issue of EGM one of these days and do a similar feature with their 200 greatest games list, which deviates quite a bit from this particular list.

Originally, I had this broken apart into four parts. Those parts are assembled into one longform post. In addition, I’ve updated a couple thoughts here and there.

The Winners And Losers Of 2015

NOTE: Yeah, I know. It’s a little late, but shit happens. So this is being posted now. Sorry, everyone.

In what has become something of an annual tradition for my web presence, I figure we do a year in review. For those joining for the first time, I do this thing at the end of the year where I would post a list of winners and losers of that year, otherwise known as the high points and low points of that year… along with some middle-of-the-road mentions. It’s something of an annual tradition and… it started off as a written form on the old blog and it continues to be that here, since after a couple days, I’ll post the written version for those who want to read it or understand what I’m trying to say in these rambling sessions. And sometimes, those written versions will have slight revisions or additions, but… in any case, let’s check out the Winners And Losers of 2015.

Alright! New AVGN… oh wait, it’s just a clip collection.

No doubt what some AVGN fans (want to) believe James Rolfe thinks of them. See? I can do stupid meme images too.

I think the comments on the YouTube video in question – another one of “those arguments” see – is what inspired this post… and mind you, it’s something that’s been on the back of my mind in case this particular brand of video rears its ugly head again… but in any event…

Yeah… for those wanting a new AVGN episode for whatever reason, you’ll have to settle for another lazily put together Top 10 list. Cryptic gaming moments is the theme this time around and… it’s an AVGN Clip Collection video. Lazily put together to appease those wanting new AVGN and forcing to settle for something that takes even less time to put together than an Irate Gamer video about Skylanders. Sure, nobody wants to see endless videos about Skylanders from a guy with a somewhat spotty and dubious YouTube career… but even those videos have more effort put into it than these Clip Collections do.

I’ve got two takes on this.
