It Took Over Two Decades…

…but John Cena finally gave up.

And people are pissed because… why?

Did you really want another #LOLCenaWins moment?

What point would it serve?

So people can have a feel good moment that will be forgotten not soon afterwards?

John Cena tapped out to GUNTHER in the main event of the Saturday Night with a look of contentment. As if to say, “Yeah, I’m done. Time to call it a career.” Lots of fans are upset because he “deserved better” or whatever the nonsense is… but to me, it’s the only finish that made sense. The whole deal with John was that he never gave up, that he kept fighting to the bitter end. You can pin him, you can choke him till he fades, you can beat him to a pulp, but he always comes back because he never gave up.

Because once he gives up, there’s no going back. There’s no more fight.

John Cena had nothing left to prove. He got his #17. He got his Grand Slam. He has a storied career and reputation unique to him. He’s more that likely to get a Hall Of Fame induction down the road. His fight is over. His career is done. Of course he’s going to give up in his last match. Whether it was against GUNTHER or whoever else, John Cena was going to tap out and call it a career, walk off into the sunset, end of story. Fin.

As for GUNTHER… well, he got a rub of sorts. He ended two careers. Management seems to be pretty high on the guy. No complaints from me. I like the dude. Nice, basic throwback heel character. Hope he continues to do well in WWE.

But yeah… John Cena’s done. Doo do do doo.

James Gunn… he’s all yours.

  1. Hey, DTM. Hope you’re doing well. I rarely post around here and I realize that this is a little late to the party, but since you did a post on John Cena’s last match, I just wanted to share a quick story with you if you don’t mind.

Last year, I was watching a WWE PLE with my then-8 year old kid who is a big John Cena fan. Saw all the matches, has a bunch of shirts and caps. Can’t get enough of the guy. I forget the name of the show, but John Cena showed up and announced his 2025 retirement tour. My kid then looks up to me and asks “Why is John Cena giving up wrestling?”

I said that John Cena wasn’t “giving up,” but he was going to have one more run before calling it quits next year. My kid replies with “So he gives up on his last match?” And I paused for a bit before saying, “Sure, why not?” The kid then replied “So does that mean he’s not gonna fight Superman?” And I told him that he couldn’t fight Superman and wrestle at the same time. John Cena’s an old man now. He’s on borrowed time.

To make a long story short, my 8 year old figured out the finish to John Cena’s last match long before any of the so-called wrestling experts, analysts, journalists, and any smart mark with a Youtube channel were debating how it should go. My now 9-year old kid had no problem with the finish because he saw the finish coming when he was eight and heard John Cena announce his retirement tour.

To quote the late, great Brodie Lee, my 8 year old is not a fucking idiot.

That’s all I wanted to say. All the best to you and your dog.

    1. Just the thing I needed before I’m finally on the verge of dozing off. Thank you for a lovely story. Best wishes to you and your child as well.
