DVD Review – The Legacy of Stone Cold Steve Austin (3-Disc Set)

Because we needed another Austin retrospective set…

The Legacy Of Stone Cold Steve Austin is a 3-disc DVD set (also available on Blu-Ray) that once again spotlights one of the biggest names in WWE, but this one is different because it’s mostly a compilation of matches with some occasional interview bits from Steve Austin himself. So it’s less a documentary and more a collection of some of Austin’s best matches. Not only his WWF stuff, but also some of his WCW and ECW stuff.

THE GOOD: It’s all about the matches, son. And what you have here is a solid collection of matches that are either really good, really important, or both. I like that there are a bunch of matches I’ve not seen before (never saw the one with Undertaker from 97) as well as a bunch I have… also nice of them to include a couple WCW matches from Austin’s Stunning days, as well as some of his ECW output, which really emphasizes Austin as a really good promo guy and brawler. I also liked the Steve Austin/Terry Funk extra bit from Shotgun Saturday Night. Of all the things on this set, this gets the biggest kick out of me.

THE BAD: Seeing that this is a WWE DVD, there’s a large focus on the WWE side of things. This is reflected by the fact that there’s only a couple WCW matches on here (and even some of his ECW) stuff while the rest of the set is during the glory years of Austin 3:16. Which is fine, but it’s also stuff that I’ve already seen countless times before with a couple exceptions. Also, the only Mania match that is featured on this set is the one with Rock at Mania X-Seven, so no Tyson to be found here. Ultimately, these are but minor quibbles in an otherwise fine collection.

All in all, this is a good set on Stone Cold if you want to watch some rare stuff and let’s hope that the next Austin compilation (because there will be another one) has more greatness such as this.
