TNA Slammiversary 2024

So I watched Slammiversary this past weekend… no, I didn’t attend the show – it took place in Montreal in front of a packed 5000+ at the Verdun Auditorium, which was probably the biggest crowd TNA has done in a long, LONG time, so good for them – but I did catch the PPV and to say that stuff happened on this show would be an understatement.

Though, yes, let’s the big lemon out of the way; Joe Hendry didn’t win the TNA title in the main event six-man elimination match. Honestly, I didn’t really expect him to despite the massive pop he got in the arena, but this was all about Nic Nemeth proving that he’s still got it and while I’m sure people are upset and going “TNA DOESN’T BELIEVE” or something like that, I have a feeling Joe Hendry is going to get a big run somewhere down the line… so long as he isn’t poached by WWE once his contract expires, of course.

In any event, there was a PPV. I have some quick thoughts and here we go…

TNA Rebellion 2024

So I had a choice between watching TNA’s latest PPV (Rebellion) or AEW’s latest PPV (Dynasty) and ultimately, TNA won out. It also helps that I’ve been following Impact for quite a bit and the shows were compelling enough to merit getting this PPV… but not compelling enough for me to check out the couple TNA+ premium shows in between the two major PPV shows for TNA.

In any event, we’ll touch on the Rebellion PPV rather quickly because, truth be told, outside of some returning faces to the promotion, there’s not much to say about this one. It was largely a pretty good show with some good action and that’s about it, really. But let’s dive in, anyway…

TNA Hard To Kill 2024

It’s a bold new era, indeed… so bold that I actually went ahead and made a new banner rather than reuse the same, tired Steven Seagal Hard To Kill banner that I’ve been using for the previous shows.

So yes… we’re doing a brand-spanking new TNA PPV in 2024.

This year’s Hard To Kill event signified the re-branding of Impact Wrestling back to TNA Wrestling, complete with old-but-slightly-newish TNA logo, the old-but-slightly-newest TNA Impact logo for the TV Show that looks like a 3-year old designed it, and they even brought back the old “Cross The Line” song that the hardcore TNA fans liked so much and… well, what do you want me to say? Good to see TNA back after all these years? Why would I say that since I’ve kept calling them TNA even when they didn’t? And while the show has seen a considerable improvement in the years since the first changeover to Impact back in 2017, the show did some very TNA things that still made it TNA.

But that was then and this is… well, it’s still then. But it’s a bold new era for TNA and with Scott D’Amore leading the charge, I’m sure everything will be just fine and el dandy for TNA…

Wait, what’s that?

They fired Scott D’Amore soon after?

Really?

Well… fuck that, then.

Okay, well… let’s dive into Hard To Kill, shall we?

21 Years Ago In TNA #22 – Aw, Shit… It’s Vince Russo… (a.k.a. THE END FOR ME… November 20th, 2002)

21 Years Ago In TNA… Vince Russo made his return to television.

And this is where I dropped the show.

When I started this project back in June, there were three possible exit points that I had considered ending this on. The first being after sampling the first five episodes on YouTube, which were free. The second exit point would’ve been right around the two-week period where I could’ve found something else to do instead, but opted to continue this TNA journey for better or worse. However, this third and final exit point is a sure thing; the debut of Vince Russo on TNA was the last stop. Whether the show is good or not – and spoiler: the show wasn’t very good – this is the last edition of my journey to NWA-TNA from 21 years ago. I’m done.

And so I invite you to join me with on this final edition of 21 Years Ago In TNA… because there isn’t going to be another one… ever. The next TNA show I’m doing is probably gonna be the new one in January, which means I’m gonna need a new banner.

Let’s blow this thing and go home.

21 Years Ago In TNA #21 – What’s That Tingling Sensation? (November 13th, 2002)

Hey, did you hear? Bryan Alvarez threw in the towel on NWA-TNA.

Maybe I should have done the same… but fuck me, we’re in this for another week… but next week? That’s when this ride comes to an end. One more week and this journey will be over. I’m jumping off this bandwagon and moving on to greener pastures.

This show had no chance of convincing me to keep going. No matter how good it got, no matter how much promise it bore, it was never going to sell me on further shows beyond this point. It simply isn’t going to happen. I remember some of those shows being really, really bad and quite frankly, I have no desire to revisit those shows any time soon.

This show has no chance of changing my mind. After next week’s show, this experiment comes to an end. There’s plenty of other decent TNA shows that I could have been watching with this Impact Plus subscription; why am I wasting it on this crap? Hell, there are some good TNA PPVs being uploaded onto their YouTube channel that I could watch FOR FREE… and yet instead of watching those shows, I’m watching this shitpile. After next week’s show, no more.

With that having been said, this week’s edition of NWA-TNA isn’t terrible. I wouldn’t go so far as to call it good, but it wasn’t completely awful. For the most part, it was largely boring and forgettable.

21 Years Ago In TNA #20 – It’s Panda-Monium In The Asylum (November 6th, 2002)

So my understanding is that this is the point (or close to it) where Panda Energy has taken majority interest in TNA, thus insuring that it was last for years and years and years and years and years to come… somewhere in Washington, Shoulders Torelli shed a tear. In any event, there’s money coming in so that means we can focus on having some decent shows to entice people in buying this shit on a weekly basis.
And for what it’s worth, this show wasn’t too bad.

21 Years Ago In TNA #18 – I’ve Seen This Before (October 23rd, 2002)

Tonight on NWA-TNA, Curt Hennig challenges Ron Killings for the NWA World’s Heavyweight Championship… again. Syxx-Pac challenges AJ Styles for the X-Division Championship… again. Jeff Jarrett takes on Scott Hall… again.

Well, if you didn’t buy those other PPVs, you got all the major matches here. Not sure if that’s a net positive, but to this show’s credit, I didn’t completely hate this.

21 Years Ago In TNA #17 – Blankity Blank Blank Blank (October 16th, 2002)

The former Mr. Perfect challenges THE TRUTH for the NWA Worlds’ Heavyweight Championship… and also the former Road Dogg teams with that NASCAR guy to take on Jeff Jarrett and… one of the Rainbow guys… take a guess as to which of these is the main event.

21 Years Ago In TNA #16 – Devoid Of Merit (October 9th, 2002)

This week’s show isn’t a terrible one… but is such a nothing happening show that I’m amazed people stuck around to fork another ten bucks for next week’s show. Only the opener and the main event is going to get extensive (not by much) coverage while everything else is glossed over. Sorry, but nothing happened to keep my attention beyond “yeah, that was a thing.”
