WWE Wrestlemania Backlash 2021

I hadn’t planned on watching this show. I had better things to do. Walk my dog, scratch my balls, that sort of thing.

But when friends of mine (who shall no longer be called friends after this night) told me to give the show a watch, I couldn’t help but be curious as to what was so special about this show… actually, that’s a lie. I knew about the thing that made this show the talk of the town. I knew about it since the show aired. I heard it on F4W. I heard it on Scott Keith’s blog. The Youtubes made their thoughts known. I figured, “Yeah. Not wasting my time.”

Those buddies I mentioned? They mentioned that thing didn’t last long and the show was, for the most part, excellent. After seeing the show, I don’t know if I would go that far, but it was certainly a show that is… probably only going to be known for one thing… anyhoo, onwards.

WCW Wrestlewar 1992

Before anyone asks… yes, I somehow managed to finagle time to watch the Backlash show… no, I will not musing on it. I want to muse on something good. You’ll get your helping next week, so… that’s something, I guess.

So botched ending, that Blood & Guts match from AEW a couple weeks was pretty fun and prompted me to pop onto the WWE Network – because I can do that still here in Canada – and check out an old Wargames show. Didn’t want to watch any of the WCW/nWo shenanigans and I qasn’t feeling anything from the Crockett years… but there was one show I’ve heard good things about and that was Wrestlewar 1992, with the main event being the Wargames between Sting’s Squadron and the Dangerous Alliance.

You’ve got my attention with this one kids.

Impact Wrestling Rebellion 2021

You know… I ought to be talking about Blood & Guts. But… tomorrow.

In the meantime, we’ve got Rebellion from two weeks ago; the biggest show of the year for Impact Wrestling featuring the biggest match in the history of the wrestling business, a once-in-a-lifetime moment that seldom gets witnessed by wrestling fans around the world and of all ages. I am, of course, referring to the highly anticipated match-up between Brian Myers and Matt Cardonas.

Oh… and Kenny Omega defends his title against some jobber who is also TNA World Champion or something.

So, for the second time this year, I’m taking time to watch an Impact Wrestling PPV and with a big time hook like Myers vs. Cardonas (or, you know, the other thing) as a big hook, I’m fairly certain this show is going to do big PPV numbers… by TNA standards, at least.

Aw, let’s forget that noise and revisit the show, which I will admit only saw the replay this past weekend as I had better things to do on the night of the show. No doubt Don Callis is losing no sleep over this revelation. Also, not much to say in general, so forgive the somewhat skimmy nature of these musings.

IMPACT WRESTLING Hard To Kill 2021

(Yeah, I’m re-using the same banner as last year’s event. Sure, why not? They only made one Hard To Kill movie… I jinxed it, didn’t I?)
For the first time in a good long time, history will be made over at the promotion formerly known as TNA, as Impact Wrestling presents their Rebellion PPV that will feature the title vs. title match between reigning Impact World Champion Rich Swann and AEW World Champion Kenny Omega in what I’m sure will be a classic match with a very obvious ending.
Not sure if I’ll be catching the PPV tonight – depends if stuff doesn’t come up – but I figured what better way to preface this undoubtedly overhyped PPV event from a live TNA house show (a.k.a. empty arena with piped in crowd noise… which is better than the Thunderdome to be honest) than to post my thoughts on the first Impact PPV of the year, which kicked things off with a bang, featuring what may very well be the biggest match in the history of the promotion.
I am, of course, referring to the masterpiece that is ETHAN PAGE vs. THE KARATE MAN! In a match TO THE DEATH where SOMEBODY ACTUALLY DIES!
Oh, and there’s a six-man main event featuring AEW World Champion Kenny Omega… but who cares about the jobber? What’s gonna happen with THE KARATE MAN?!
Let’s jump in, shall we?

Ramblemania 37

“It’s Like Having Two Days Of Colonoscopies.”
Jim Ross on two nights of Wrestlemania

For some reason, I found that quote from WWE Hall Of Famer, AEW Announcer, and former Dippin’ Dots pitchman Jim Ross funny. And considering I’ve had my share of colonoscopies over the years, that certainly sounds like an apt analogy.

For the first time since this pandemic hit, WWE is running a show with a large number of fans at the Raymond James stadium in Tampa. It’s not a full audience or anything because COVID is still a prominent heel, but there’s just enough there that it almost looks like a crowded event surrounded by a bunch of cardboard cutouts. Awesome.

Anyway, both nights are covered here and will be divided as such. I saw some bits when the show aired, but was busy with other stuff so I had to wait until the replay to check it out. Much to my surprise, I was actually able to watch both shows straight with maybe a couple quick breaks at most.

NWA Into The Fire (December 2019 PPV)

So… this was on the cheap and I figured why not? I enjoyed the three free PPVs that NWA provided and so might as well chip in a couple bucks to check out the rest of the shows.

Into The Fire took place at the studios where they shot their episodes of NWA Powerrrrrrr, which means a small studio set modeled after the old Mid-Atlantic techwood studios from thirty plus years ago. It’s a nice setting for a weekly studio wrestling show, but not a particularly inspired look for a paid PPV event.

NWA Crocket Cup 2019

So NWA brought back the Crockett Cup in 2019, which was a staple of the old Jim Crockett Promotion before they got bought by Turner and they were poised to make it an annual event before Corona struck. The uptick is that this show was posted onto their Youtube page for free (until it was taken down, along with everything else), so here we are.

Better late than never, I suppose.

NWA Pop-Up Event (January 2019)

So Billy Corgan’s revived National Wrestling Alliance – which is slowly but surely getting back on track with its weekly PPV gimmick that got TNA off the ground – ran its second event in January last year; a “pop-up” event. This featured a Nick Aldis vs. James Storm match for the NWA World Title, but it also featured former WCW World Champion David Arquette in a hair vs hair match against some guy named Joe… kinda, sorta…

Anyway, it was on the NWA Youtube channel for a short while before it was taken down, so I figured why not? This was a show that was thrown together quickly, had some marquee matches, and that’s about it. Not a major event or anything like that; more like a house show of sorts. Anyway, on with the show.
