Ramblemania Rewind 01 – WWF Wrestlemania (1985)

March 31st, 1985
Madison Square Garden – New York, NY
Attendance: 19,121

(Note: The following post was written prior to the McMahon lawsuit from January 2024).

The showcase of the Immortals had to start somewhere, I suppose. And in 1985, Vince McMahon presented the inaugural Wrestlemania event to a live captive audience in Madison Square Garden and close-circuit television.

The original Wrestlemania pretty much set the standard for what others would follow – bigtime matches, celebrity starpower, and a sense of grandeur that gave the show something of an epic feel. From the perspective of someone who had never seen that first iteration previously, I could honestly say that I thoroughly enjoyed watching the show, both for the card itself and for the overall historical interest. It surely shows how far the event has evolved from its rather humble beginnings.

Even for its sense of grandeur that it was invoking, Wrestlemania was still pretty low-key. I liked the pre-match interviews that take place during each match, I liked that there was less of a focus on overdone skits and more of a focus on in-ring action, and I liked that my VHS copy of the show kept in the original “Eye of The Tiger” theme that served as Hulk Hogan’s entrance music at the time, rather than redub the track with “Real American” as had been the practice in some of the more recent releases from WWE.

For the sake of history, you can’t say that this was a bad show because if it was, we wouldn’t be having this conversation. Although the undercard were less-than-stellar, it wasn’t entirely horrible and the much-hyped matches sold the show itself with its appeal and intrigue if not for its in-ring work. As a whole, it’s a worthwhile viewing to see how far we’ve come and gone.

Royal Ramble 2024

Well… on a rather “uneventful” week of news, we got a rather “uneventful” Rumble.

Would’ve been nice if it were true…

So, yes, there was a particularly dark cloud that preceded over what initially began as a rather big week of development in WWE – notably the announcement of a monumental deal with Netflix that would see the streaming service become the new home of Monday Night RAW in 2025 as well as all subsequent WWE Network content outside the United States, which means that come 2025, Canada can watch WWE material on Netflix and the WWE Network would be no more. And I’ve made a post on that when the news broke.

And then… the other thing happened… I’m sure you know what I’m talking about…

I’m not going to say anything regarding that piece of business. There’s nothing I can say that hasn’t already been said and quite honestly, I would be doing nothing but adding more white noise to a ball of white noise surrounding a dreadfully disturbing situation that is still developing and will continue to do so for quite some time. Maybe some day… but not today.

In any event, I did watch some of the Rumble live, but not all of it. I ended up getting caught up with the rest of the show during the week. As to why this took longer than usual… well, other stuff came up, but I’m afraid there’s not much I could say abut the show. The card was fairly light – only four matches – but when two of those matches are the annual Royal Rumbles – it’s easy to forgive the lightweight content.

Anyway, let’s check this show out.

WWF Armageddon 2000

The final WWF PPV of the year 2000… and it’s headlined by a six-man Hell In A Cell match concocted by then-commissioner Mick Foley to bring pain to reigning and defending WWF Champion Kurt Angle, coupled with Vince’s efforts to prevent the match from happening… even though he’s the chairman and the owner, which means he could easily overrule Mick if he wanted to, but I guess that would make too much sense.

So this return to WWF 2000 hasn’t been fantastic. No Mercy had its moments and Survivor Series only had one. My hopes aren’t high for this one, but… okay, here we go.

WWF No Mercy 2000

So after twenty weeks or so of an ill-conceived revisit to the early days of NWA-TNA, it’s time to go back to some quality wrestling… but not today’s wrestling. To be honest, I’ve been out of the loop as of late. I know that WWE had their Survivor Series PPV recently and that was a thing. I know Tony Khan has made more “important announcements” that aren’t all that important. Impact is going back to being TNA, which hopefully means going back to that period when the show was actually good and not… everything else.

So the last time we touched WWF in the year 2000, it was the Unforgiven PPV that saw Stone Cold Steve Austin return from his near-year long sabbatical of neck fusion surgery due to being run over by a car. The culprit turned out to be Rikishi. It went over like a fart in church.

Anyway, it’s No Mercy. They named a video game after this. Steve Austin makes his return to in ring action to get revenge on the guy who tried to run him over. Kurt Angle gets another shot at the WWF Championship. Other stuff happens, I guess. Hey, there’s some stuff to look forward to here, so I can’t be too unhappy.

Onwards, my friend. Y2K beckons.

21 Years Ago In TNA #22 – Aw, Shit… It’s Vince Russo… (a.k.a. THE END FOR ME… November 20th, 2002)

21 Years Ago In TNA… Vince Russo made his return to television.

And this is where I dropped the show.

When I started this project back in June, there were three possible exit points that I had considered ending this on. The first being after sampling the first five episodes on YouTube, which were free. The second exit point would’ve been right around the two-week period where I could’ve found something else to do instead, but opted to continue this TNA journey for better or worse. However, this third and final exit point is a sure thing; the debut of Vince Russo on TNA was the last stop. Whether the show is good or not – and spoiler: the show wasn’t very good – this is the last edition of my journey to NWA-TNA from 21 years ago. I’m done.

And so I invite you to join me with on this final edition of 21 Years Ago In TNA… because there isn’t going to be another one… ever. The next TNA show I’m doing is probably gonna be the new one in January, which means I’m gonna need a new banner.

Let’s blow this thing and go home.

21 Years Ago In TNA #21 – What’s That Tingling Sensation? (November 13th, 2002)

Hey, did you hear? Bryan Alvarez threw in the towel on NWA-TNA.

Maybe I should have done the same… but fuck me, we’re in this for another week… but next week? That’s when this ride comes to an end. One more week and this journey will be over. I’m jumping off this bandwagon and moving on to greener pastures.

This show had no chance of convincing me to keep going. No matter how good it got, no matter how much promise it bore, it was never going to sell me on further shows beyond this point. It simply isn’t going to happen. I remember some of those shows being really, really bad and quite frankly, I have no desire to revisit those shows any time soon.

This show has no chance of changing my mind. After next week’s show, this experiment comes to an end. There’s plenty of other decent TNA shows that I could have been watching with this Impact Plus subscription; why am I wasting it on this crap? Hell, there are some good TNA PPVs being uploaded onto their YouTube channel that I could watch FOR FREE… and yet instead of watching those shows, I’m watching this shitpile. After next week’s show, no more.

With that having been said, this week’s edition of NWA-TNA isn’t terrible. I wouldn’t go so far as to call it good, but it wasn’t completely awful. For the most part, it was largely boring and forgettable.

21 Years Ago In TNA #20 – It’s Panda-Monium In The Asylum (November 6th, 2002)

So my understanding is that this is the point (or close to it) where Panda Energy has taken majority interest in TNA, thus insuring that it was last for years and years and years and years and years to come… somewhere in Washington, Shoulders Torelli shed a tear. In any event, there’s money coming in so that means we can focus on having some decent shows to entice people in buying this shit on a weekly basis.
And for what it’s worth, this show wasn’t too bad.

21 Years Ago In TNA #18 – I’ve Seen This Before (October 23rd, 2002)

Tonight on NWA-TNA, Curt Hennig challenges Ron Killings for the NWA World’s Heavyweight Championship… again. Syxx-Pac challenges AJ Styles for the X-Division Championship… again. Jeff Jarrett takes on Scott Hall… again.

Well, if you didn’t buy those other PPVs, you got all the major matches here. Not sure if that’s a net positive, but to this show’s credit, I didn’t completely hate this.
