Obama Buries Washington Snow

Original Source article: http://www.montrealgazette.com/Obama+heats+over+Capitol+cold+snap/1227166/story.html

You know things are bad when your president thinks your capital is full of chickens because of some ice.

“Can I make a comment that is unrelated to the economy very quickly and it has to do with Washington?” President Barrack Obama told reporters prior to a White House meeting with business leaders early Wednesday morning.

“My children’s school was canceled today. Because of what? Some ice?”

“Yessir, Mr. President,” replied a swave reported, “Because of some ice.”

Apparently, President Obama was surprised by the fact that a few centimeters of snow and a thin layer of ice that was all but melted away before nine o’clock was enough for some schools to either open later or close for the day. Obama, being a man from Chicago and used to real winter weather, suggests that Washington can’t handle three centimeters of snow and that a bit of flinty Chicago toughness is needed.

Congratulations, Toronto. You are no longer the wussiest city in winter.

Now, to be fair, it can be argued that Washington doesn’t have the proper means to deal with this “extreme” weather. Mind you, they could have pumped more funds into better snow equipment, but then you’d be taking away from funding for the War on Terror… or is it the War on Christmas?

Oh who cares?

Problems With Voting Every Other Month

A Rare Dose Of Canadian Politics

You know what? I hate interjecting politics of any kind on the blog or in any of my web projects… but I just have to ask for your indulgence just this once… please? I promise I will never bring politics up again… intentionally. We cool? OK. Here We Go…

Another comment on a Montreal Gazette article… this time regarding an 18-year-old college student running for a seat in the Quebec provincial election. The article itself is nothing special, but there’s only a couple comments I’d like to comment on, particularly on a couple quotes from the PQ candidate Daniella Johnson-Meneghin, who is surprisingly shocked by the lack of enthusiasm in the current Quebec election. As is the norm, text from the source article are in italics.

“Look at me, look what I’m doing. I’m running for the experience, and to inspire young people.”

Yeah, that’s nice, dear. It’s always good to encourage these young teenagers to use their newfound ability to vote for one of three different flavors of Quebec separatists. Excellent goal indeed.

Though this is the sixth federal, provincial or municipal vote in Montreal in five years – the first-time candidate says she’s shocked by the lack of interest.

O RLY?… I don’t have a fucking owl, let’s move on.

“Is it that much of a burden to go to vote?” she asks the cynics.

One of the cynics – the one writing this very blog – replies with a bewildered tone, “Um… for the second time in two months? Um, er… YES”

“There are so many countries that would wish to have democracies like ours,” Johnson-Meneghini tells them. “And we complain about that?”

Yes, they would be happy to have democracies like ours… but they’d be better off having democracies like the Americans, who only have two significant parties and as such only have elections every four years… much better system overall and also more consistant.

The article does make a note that Johnson-Meneghini’s motherland of Argentina makes voting a compulsary passage… which means that their system is more stable and most people who don’t have a viable choice to vote for usually spoil their vote – another equally powerful message to the candidates.

Of course, the plucky candidate points out some significant results that voting will get you.

“Look at the ADQ; nobody ever thought they would end up with 41 seats (in the last election).”

And after this election, the ADQ will be lucky enough to hold on to one seat, if any.

“And look at (U.S. President-elect) Barack Obama.”

Yes… let’s look at the half-black president elect who had TWO YEARS to campaign for one election… and who had the incredible advantage of not being in the same political party as BUSH.

“This is change that nobody thought would happen, but did because people went out to vote and they changed history.”

Yes, you have presented a couple examples. Now let me present my own example… a little federal election that we had back in October of this year. What happened? NOTHING. We went in with a minority Harper government and we went out with a minority Harper government. No history changed there, huh?! And you’re wondering why people are fed up with another fucking election! There’s no motive behind these elections other than to cash in on some high approval ratings so that the present minority government could somehow sucker enough voters to give them a majority government so that they can do whatever the fuck they want without the threat of the opposition parties taking them down with a no-confidence vote and forcing everyone to vote again.

Sorry about the run-on. It’s just too damn frustrating to think about these things.

Let me be clear on this. I like the democratic process. I like the fact that we have this hard-fought ability to vote for our leaders. Our ancestors who have fought and died for this freedom would not want us to take this right for granted.

It sucks that less people are showing up to polls to vote than ever… on the other hand, it sucks that these elections are no longer about choosing a leader and direction in government, but rather a matter of whether the current leader (or new leader) gets a majority government or not. There’s nothing historic about that.

The only historical footnote in the recent federal election was that Harper had headed the longest running minority government ever, according to fact checkers. So what?

The only historical footnote in this provincial election is that there’s a woman involved… a woman who is partly responsible for the lack of doctors in Quebec. Oh yeah, shit like that is definitely worthy of an Obama comparison.

And you know what the truly sad thing about all this? With all the shit going on in Ottawa, I wouldn’t be surprised that we’d get ANOTHER federal election in a couple months time. So we have an economic crisis on our hands, lots of people are worried about their savings and stuff, but apparently there’s enough money to throw ANOTHER FUCKING FEDERAL ELECTION JUST A SHORT TIME AFTER WE JUST FUCKING HAD A FUCKING FEDERAL ELECTION! THAT BULLSHIT IS MORE WORTHY OF A BUSH COMPARISON THAN ANYTHING ELSE!

But I digress… let’s move on.

The rest of article just details a bit of background on Johnson-Meneghini before touching upon her new party’s “evil” goal.

And when the nagging question of the PQ’s commitment to separating Quebec from the rest of Canada comes up she tries to calm their concerns.

“(PQ leader) Pauline Marois doesn’t want to hold a referendum,” Johnson-Meneghini tells voters, asking them to “look beyond the sovereignty issue.”

Sorry, kid. But a vote for PQ is a vote for separatism. Not gonna happen.

And that’s about it, really. I hope you’ve all enjoyed my explosion into politics. I’ll probably mention the election madness somewhere down the line… after that, that’s it.

There are times where I almost wish I was American…

I said “almost.”

(2019 Update: Daniella Johnson-Meneghin is still in politics as a member of Montreal Mayor Valerie Plante’s cabinet. Well, she’s doing well for herself, at least. Kudos.)

Congrats to Obama

Congratulations to Barack Obama for winning what many considered to be the most important election in American history. In a couple months (and I must stress a couple months), he’ll be inaugurated and be the first African-American to be president since… ever. Now why can’t people say that? People blindly and stupidly refer to the guy as the first black president, when in fact he’s only half-black.

Don’t believe for a second that Obama’s win will bring about immediate change. Any plan that comes to fruition takes time to have any affect and even so, you still have two more months of Dubya to endure.

In any case, I feel bad for John McCain. Don’t get me wrong; I don’t agree on some of his ideas, I do believe that McCain would continue Bush’s wars and even start off some of his own just for kicks, and I cringe at the thought of the most clueless woman being one step away from the most powerful seat in the US, but even so, had he been running against, say, Hilary, he might have had a sporting chance and some of his ideas might actually be different from Bush’s. But against a heavy favorite like Obama, he virtually had no chance.

That… and the endorsement from Dubya pretty much killed off his chances.

So, congrats to Obama. Better luck next time to McCain. Go back to Alaska, Sarah Palin.

So I guess Tina Fey needs something else to do right about now…

This Is What It Comes Down To…

So Screwattack has posted another video on their site: one called “A Day In The Life of Screwattack.” Anyone thinking this would be a nice look in the back would be disappointed to find that it’s just Jose running out in the snow without his shirt on and jiggling his man-tits. Some found funny, but I found it… meh.

What happened to videos where they go to cool video game stores or show off peoples’ games collection? Even the clips of the weeks have degraded into nothing more than obscene comedy pieces. As much as I want to support these guys through their own site instead of their GameTrailers videos, I can’t really do that when they’re trying too hard to be a lousy sitcom.

What happened to the site that was supposed to be about video games and fun? Because I’ve been seeing neither as of late.

Man, I miss Tom. When is the GameHeroes coming up?

The Language Police Wages War On Irish Relics

An Irish pub was recently given notice by Quebec’s signature language police to take down their Irish decorations of old signs and ads from Ireland, because they’re not in French or face fines. So apparently this province can’t afford to maintain infrastructure and improve services such as education and health plans, but we can afford to bully business owners who don’t speak French. Apparently I missed the news story about Quebec being run by Nazis.

Fortunately, after common sense came along and smacked these idiots upside the head, the language police have decided that the English decor of the Irish pub can stay put. Smart folks.

* Quebec may not be run by Nazis.

Goodbye, Smokeranger. We Hardly Knew Ye.

Smokeranger’s Domain was the second Geocities/Yahoo account I made and yet it was the most used. The domain never got as much treatment as the WS and for a good while the account was dormant.

Why shut down the account? So that Calvin’s buddies can take a hint.

I rarely check Smokeranger’s mail but decided to do so anyway. I end up with mail from guys I hardly know concerning a marching band I’ve never heard of. Apparently a lot of people believe Smokeranger is this Calvin fellow, but I can assure that’s not the case.

I don’t know Calvin. I don’t know these people.

So rather than let people know that I’m not Calvin (because people are too stupid to let that sink in), I decided to cut my loss and kill the account.

So what becomes of the Domain? Plans are being done to integrate it as a subsite for the Webstation (I already added a quick link in case it comes to fruition). Hopefully, content won’t be too bad.

So to Calvin’s friends, Smokeranger won’t be subject to your poor judgment. And to Calvin, you can have the account in 90 days for all I care. I no longer have claim to the account, but I’ll be damned if I let you keep the site.

Enough already. I’m off to bed.

Later.

(2011 Update: Turns out Geocities is no more… site would have gone either way.)

Getting Up To Speed

So I got back my PC (now with a gig of RAM, thanks guys) last Monday. Took longer than I would have cared for, but at least it runs a little smoother now.

I’m probably going to do something particular uncharacteristic of me and unusual of this blog; I have a couple thoughts on some political landscapes. Unfortunately, this is mostly happenings in Quebec and whatnot. Yeah, I usually avoid the political talk when I can, but this is kinda irking me (and to be fair, it’s not really political – just that the subjects mostly link to the politics).

So it seems that the latest Quebec budget has caused some dissention among the National Assembly members. The Liberal minority government and the Parti Quebecois are currently negotiating amendments to the budget (the Action Democratique – the main opposing party – has already voted against the budget) in order to make it passable. If the budget is fully rejected, another election could be looming in July. That means more taxpayers money thrown into the Wasteful Spending department. It seems that the Libbies should just swallow their pride and make the damn changes needed to let the budget pass. It’s bad enough I have to go to an election once this year; I don’t feel like contributing to the bullshit voting again for quite some time, much less three-four months later.

Recent reports are revealed illegal money spent by Option Canada during the 1995 referendum. Apparently, one official has already been fired as a result. It’s really unfortunate that people need to resort to illegal spending to get their way. It’s a sad state of affairs, but on the bright side, the right side won… hey, that rhymes.

Boris, a tiger that had spent the majority of his life in a Quebec zoo, was moved to an Albertan zoo and is mostly bored unless someone speaks French. Not sure what this has to do with politics, but the idea of a francophone tiger is funny.

That’s about it. I’m going to end this “big return” now before I get too carried away. Nothing big.

I probably have a few “announcements” and “declarations” to make this weekend. But that’s this weekend. For now… I’m off to the showers and then to work.

Later.

Dead.

That about sums up last night. No trick or treaters around our block – no candy bearers. Now my block has few kids and they’re a rare bunch. But just this morning, my mom told me that my aunt hadn’t given any candy last night either and that area is usually full of kids.

Last night proved that Halloween around my neck of the woods is pretty much dead. I mean, sure it rained, but so what? By six or seven, it died out and it’s all good. But other than my cousin’s kid, nobody showed up. What happened? There used to be this one Halloween years ago when it SNOWED and we still went out collecting candy and egging peoples’ houses.

What the fuck happened to Halloween around here?

This is ridiculous, man. We need to reclaim Halloween.

For Montreal users of public transportation only

Note: This concerns local interests so most parties outside of Montreal may not take notice.

Apparently due to some settlement between the Societe de Transportation de Montreal and some union group, the monthly passes are cheaper for the month of November. Now you can purchase your monthly passes for $61 instead of the usual $63. That’s right; you save a whole two bucks off. Goes to show how “generous” the STM just happens to be.

Of course, the part about all this is that in a couple months, the fares will raise again, ensuring that the STM will eventually get those two dollars you’ve saved this month.

Public transportation… sucks.

Happy Halloween, everyone.

Later.
