Lord Drakkon Retu… OH FUCK OFF!

Source: https://www.powerrangersnow.com/sabans-go-go-power-rangers-issue-23-details/

So, this is supposed to be a new direction for the Power Rangers comics from Boom… and what do they give us? Their shitty “Evil Tommy” bad guy comes back from… something or other.

You know what? I’m done.

The minute I’ve heard the news and came across the above source, I went over to my Comixology account and cancelled my subscriptions to both the Go Go series and the MMPR series. I am done with this shit.

From this point forth, I am on a six-month moratorium from anything pertaining to Boom Studios’ Ranger comics. I was willing to give it a chance going forward – especially with the rather underwhelming Beyond The Grid storyline – but if this is what I have to look forward to, then I am done for the foreseeable future.

I’ve seen Evil Tommy-types done better in poorly written fanfictions than what was done with this dipshit. Hell, I’ve done the Evil Tommy bit and even he comes off as more compelling than this fucking doofus… especially considering how he met his ultimate defeat at the end of that other wankfest.

Fuck off. Fuck off, all you fuckers. Fuck you.

I’m done.

Good night.

Beyond The Grid… Lies A World Void Of Purpose

So the recent Beyond The Grid story-arc that has dominated the MMPR comic book series has concluded. This is the one with the ragtag band of Rangers who act almost nothing like their on-screen portrayals, the one with the OC ship that not only fulfills the diversity checklist just fine but also become Rangers themselves, the one with the somewhat inconsistent artwork (though to be fair, it only slightly got better towards the end), and the one with the ultimate drab and uninteresting storylines again.

I have somewhat soured on this story before it even became a thing, because it deviated from what the series is supposed to be focused on. And even though I wasn’t on board with it, I was willing to give it a chance. And to be fair, there’s a couple good points I could bring up. I like the idea of the Praetor being a fallen Morphin Master; I think there’s potential behind that idea that I felt wasn’t explored all that much here. And to be fair, this whole ragtag band of Rangers lost in time or whatever was something that could’ve made for its own series… its own series, I emphasize.

It’s just unfortunate that something with potential is squandered by what is essentially sub subpar fanfiction drivel… and I’ve written such drivel in the past, so I’d know. And after having to sit through a dozen issues of Kyle Higgins’ unapologetic Tommy wankfest, I would’ve liked to have seen something better and well… that’s not why I got.

But, hey. Issue 40 is supposed to jump us into the second season with a brand-new White Ranger guy and half the team replaced. Some would suggest that this is a return to form and it’ll be the usual suspects, but given how Boom wants to “swerve” fans for the sake of swerving fans, I’m wondering if I should even expect good things out of that camp.

Oh well, at least the secondary Go Go series is alright.

The Irate One HATES Beyond The Grid!

Anyone remember Chris Bores?

You know, he of the Irate Neo Breakfast Is Ruined fame?
Well, some time ago, he posted the following thoughts on Facehole:
“Is anyone else out there reading the Boom Comics Power Rangers Comic? For God sake, who the hell green lit this “Beyond the Grid” storyline. It is a complete trainwreck. This was one of the comics I looked forward to reading every month. Now I have to wait 10 months for this damn thing to end. 10 months! Talk about a huge gamble gone wrong. It’s no wonder they press released the next story they are doing months before they normally would so they don’t completely lose their fanbase. Gah!! Makes me want to do an Irate Comic Book Show.”
You know… I’m not a fan of the current Beyond The Grid thing going on; there are some issues with the series that stifle my enjoyment, but I don’t think it was a complete trainwreck so much as it’s just not all that interesting… at least, not enough to endure the length it’s been given. Honestly, five issues was more than adequate before going back to the main team of which the book is named after and then if there was any real interest, you could turn that into its own book.
Now, Bores, on the other hand… look, I’ve no ill will towards the guy. I mock him at times, but only in good humor. But I read this reaction from him in regards to this one story and I’m like… Chris, why don’t you have a seat over there?
“Fine.”
Good boy, Chris. Now, what’s wrong?
“It’s this Boom Boom Power Grid thing. It’s a bunch of diarrhea dickwaffles!”
I see, I see… what were you planning tonight?
“What are you talking about?”
Well, you said you wanted to do an Irate Comic Book Show because of this one story.
“Well, it’s just an idea and I’m sure my fans will love it.”
So how do you explain these text messages?
“What text messages?”
You know, the ones you sent to Cousin Steve saying you’l [blank] [blank] his [blank] [blank]. [blank] [blank] [blank] [blank] [blank] [blank] [blank], you [blank] [blank] [blank].
“Wait a minute! I never send that! That was Evil Gamer!”
Okay, Chris. Go ahead and head out that door.
“Fine! I’m outta here, I gotta go shoot some more Puppet Ste… er, I mean, spend the next five years filming the next edition of Chris Neo and… wait, what the fuck are all these cops doing?! Hey, get your hands off me! I didn’t do anything! DON’T TASE ME, BRO MAN!”

Regularly Scheduled MMPR Returns To Comics In Issue 40

And apparently, the series is jumping ahead to the White Ranger days… and we’re getting another “event” comic story called “Necessary Evil.” Which means it’s probably an excuse to bring back that Drakkon character again. On the flip side, it’s from the same fellow who’s currently writing the secondary Go Go comic, which is actually quite nice.

In any event, it’ll be a long wait before we get back to the title characters being advertised because the current “Grid” story is doing nothing for me right now.

About That Battle For The Grid Game…

Yeah, JDF on the thumbnail doesn’t instill much hope.

But yeah, from the Legacy War mobile phone game folks comes another fighting that is most definitely NOT Legacy Wars. None of that rock-paper-scissors nonsense; just straight-up “accessible” fighting game mechanics… whatever that entails.

So another Power Rangers fighting game, huh? I’m cool with that, actually. Let’s hope it turns out good, but considering the track record of recent games in the franchise, I’m keeping my expectations firmly on the ground.

The Grid Is Broke… Going Against The Grid.

So I’m on the verge of giving up on the Boom MMPR run.

Shattered Grid was pretty worthless and now you have this generic space opera featuring characters that I don’t care about while you have Power Rangers from random seasons stuck in the middle. They try to fashion this as some big epic, but honestly, it’s hard for me to get excited about something when you have big event after big event after big event and everything comes off as lame.

I like the Go Go Power Rangers run, though. Those are fun bits even with the dreary Matt stuff. But as far as the main book is concerned, I might give it one more issue to turn me over and then stop the subscription until the MMPR comic book goes back to being about the MMPR.

Beyond The Grid? More like Bottom Of The Grid.

Boom’s Practices Suck

I usually save this for the wrestling related bits, but this is something that bothers me a bit.

Hardcover editions should be for collecting pre-existing issues and including some neat little bonus bits, not including stories integral to your overall narrative. Boom including stories in their MMPR hardcover collections that are part of their overall story (Volume 1 has a Drakkon related thing and Volume 2 has the origins of their custom Psycho Ranger paint job) is a pretty scummy move in an effort to drive more people in to rebuying shit they already have.

They’re basically Malibu Stacy with a new hat.

Ordered The Book… Got It Sooner Than Expected

Ordered a copy of this a couple days ago and came in sooner than I thought it would. Praise the glorious patrons of Amazon Prime for timely shipping times.

I’ve never had one of these things before (the publisher has made a bunch of these apparently), so I don’t know the general gist of what to expect beyond a bunch of pictures and some behind the scenes tidbits.

For those wondering, it’s got a few design sketches, some screenshots, some behind the scenes photos for the MMPR years, and lots of promotional imagery that we’ve seen plenty of times over the years. It’s not the deepest historical retrospective and it’s not quite the “tell-all” or “down and dirty” reference book that will reveal anything that hasn’t already been said before, but for a general overview on the history of the franchise and some choice design material to see how it came, it’s a cool little thing to check out that’s meaty enough to give each entry in the franchise a little bit to shine.

This is my bedtime read, by the way.

Shinzon… Drakkon… Rhaka Kahn…

This Praetor fellow… eh, not entirely sold. If only because there’s a sinking feeling in the back of my mind that this is just going to be another Drakkon repackage since BOOM and whoever’s writing stuff needs to continue their hard-on for such a wretchedly lazy character.

However, I remain somewhat cautiously optimistic that this is someone different, especially since it’s no longer Kyle “JDF’s Secret Love Slave” Higgins writing the thing.

Not a fan of that Solar Ranger design, however.

Actually, now that I think about it, the art is actually pretty hideous… especially when it comes to faces.

Oh well… I haven’t been completely turned off by this new direction. But I’m just hoping we eventually get back to what’s advertised on the cover and these fellows can end up in their own spin-off comic or something.
