Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie (SNES) w/ commentary

(2026 Update: Originally a 2013 Dailymotion upload that was posted onto Youtube a year later, my playthrough of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie with running commentary. This was in response to a video review of the game from which the brief snippet between new intro and title card is taken from. Nothing against the dude, just a difference of opinion.)

Congratulations, Linkara… I Really Mean It

I’ve sat through a Linkara video for the first time in ages… technically not a Linkara video since he was accompanied by someone called Obscurus Lupa or something… one of those TGWTG personalities I never heard of. Anyway, they did a riff of sorts on the timeless Christmas special, Alpha’s Magical Christmas. Yes,  they’re talking about a Christmas video in the tail end of March… which actually doesn’t bother me all that much. Hell, if you can have Halloween in July, why not Christmas in March? Who cares about Easter anyway?

But I digress…

So I watch this video. After watching said video, I can honestly say that if there was anything worse than sitting through Alpha’s Magical Christmas in its entirety, it’s sitting through a really shitty riff of it. So, congratulations, Lewis. You participated in something that somehow managed to outsuck Alpha’s Magical Christmas. It takes a real feat of accomplishment to do that.
On the bright side, this video wasn’t saddled with pointless storyline drivel. It was nice, simple, and to the point. It still sucked (and not in the “so bad it’s good” way – no, it really sucked the big one), but at least it wasn’t taken down to CWC levels of unbearability with rubbish stories.
If you want a good review and riffing of Alpha’s Magical Christmas (and don’t mind a bit of reading), check out this classic X-Entertainment posting which goes through the special without the waffle.

The 30-Day Challenge Under One Roof

Okay, so an explanation is in order…

This was originally posted last year as three separate blog entries. The original intention behind the 30-Day Challenge (that I had discovered on that Henshin Grid blog thing) is that it’s a list of thirty questions based on Power Rangers thar you’re supposed to answer one per day – hence the name, “30-Day Challenge”. The original plan last year was to compress it so that I’d put out six questions per day – the idea being that I’d get all thirty questions out in five days as part of a special theme week.

Unfortunately, tragedy hit close to home in the middle of the week and plans will go awry. So the end result is three blog posts spread out over a month.

Now because I’m trying to compile as much crap together as possible for the Master Document page currently in progress, I’ve manage to track down all three posts and compiled them under one handy dandy cheat sheet. So all thirty questions to this “challenge” can be found here, with some elaboration and a couple minor edits here and there.

So yeah… just remember that this was written in 2012.

Celebrating Christmas With The Power Rangers… Two Versions

The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers’ version of a Christmas special is Alpha 5 kidnapping a bunch of kids from all over the world to sing Christmas carols… badly.

The Power Rangers Samurai version of a Christmas special is a clipshow of past episodes…

I never thought I say this, but Alpha’s Magical Christmas turned out to be the better special.

MMPR 2010

I’ve been dipping back into Netflix for the past couple weeks and started watching some Mighty Morphin again. Yeah, I already have the DVDs (and they are awesome)… but Netflix just added the 2010 reversioning of the show (along with the rest of the seasons) and I decided to give it a dabble after not having seen it for a while.

It should be stated that the reversioning was somewhat controversial due to the choice of added effects and whatnots. A good number of people seem to hate it for that reason. Me? I actually didn’t care too much for them and perhaps that’s why I wasn’t too bothered by the changes. To me, it made an already cheesy, goofy show even more goofier. Whether that’s a good thing or not is up to personal preference, but to me, it just didn’t add all that much. It was MMPR, but with more glitter. It wasn’t like they made Greedo shoot first here or anything; it didn’t alter the storyline or anything. It’s just a bit flashier than before.
If they were to put this out on DVD? Yeah, I might pick it up because I’m into this stuff. I would not have gone for the mega set from Time Life if I wasn’t, but aside from that, I don’t think there would be much inclination on anyone’s part to go for what is essentially a re-release of Season 1.
