More Details On The Upcoming MMPR DVD Sets

Set to be released in August, the first volume of many Power Rangers DVD sets will contain the first thirty episodes of MMPR Season 1 and will be closed captioned. More details along with the cover art can be found at the following link:

Three DVDs with ten episodes each? Looks like the earlier seasons might be broken up into two halves, while the later Disney seasons will probably only need a single volume to contain the whole series. And it probably would have been a longshot for something a little extra to be included onto the pile.
Oh well… As long as the price is right, I might pick this up… or perhaps I’d be better off waiting for complete season sets when those eventually get released. In the meantime, I still have Netflix.

Before There Were The Hunger Games, There Was Battle Royale

Yeah, so last week, I picked up the Battle Royale Complete Collection. Have yet to see the second film or the first film’s theatrical cut, but the Director’s Cut was pretty damn brutal… in a good way. I’ve been wanting to see this film for ages (even settling for the manga at one point) due to its somewhat controversial nature and I’m pleased to say that it’s been worth the wait. Tremendously enjoyable with students killing each other in many brutal ways and I’m generally not into gory stuff in general. I’m not going to say a whole lot here; only that there’s a good story in there, there’s an insightful message if you’re willing to look deep, and it is a powerful haunting depiction of a future that could have been… and perhaps can still be.

Will shed some thoughts on the second movie when I get the chance to watch, but the original Battle Royale is definitely one that met my expectations and worth the long anticipated wait.

Need For Speed Gets A Movie… And Nobody Cared.

Before we get into it, here’s the source article of the news… and the Moviebob blog post in question.

So, according to Moviebob, there’s going to be a Need For Speed movie under development and Bob is apparently pissed that it’s not a “classic” video game franchise getting the movie treatment. Because, you know, the world is clamoring for a poorly made Metroid movie or something. Then again, I don’t think anyone was clamoring for another car movie to be made. What does Need For Speed have exactly that you can’t already find in other films such as, say, The Fast And The Furious?

Considering the movie industry’s track record in converting a largely interactive medium into feature films, I like to think that a lot of these franchises that are far more “worthy” of being adapted are fortunate not to suffer such a misstep. Aside from that, some franchises simply wouldn’t work as high-budgeted Hollywood productions considering their fantastical nature and the limited scope and vision of some of these producers. Ask yourself this; is it really worth turning Zelda into a Lord Of The Rings knockoff just so we can get a movie based on it? Is it really worth watching a Castlevania film degrade into depths that isn’t worth exploring?

Comic book movies are sort of reaching that level of respect to the source material that they’re true to the spirit of the original comics – the recent string of Marvel movies are good examples. Video game movies still have a long way to go if they’re going to get that same respect, especially if duds like DOA: Dead Or Alive, Legend Of Chun-Li, and the endless stack of Uwe Boll travesties are anything to go by.

The AVGN Movie Controversy

What you’d call questionable donation methods, I’d call smart business. He knew there’d be fans willing to fork over cash for this project, so he set up a donation drive and got that cash… and apparently made quite a bit of profit before the movie’s even finished. And now those same people who made donations to this movie will undoubtedly make another donation by purchasing a copy of the movie, which means even more profits lining the pockets.

Clever. Devilishly clever.

Wondering what I’m talking about? Here’s the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=imw0Onw162c&

Should I chime in? Is it too late?

Oh wait, I already did.

Random Thoughts On… TMNT 2012 Series Trailer

So they aired a quick promo for the upcoming TMNT CGI series that’s supposed to be out this year.

Doesn’t show much, but what it does show says quite a bit about a couple changes that have been made to the Turtles’ arsenal. Honestly, not sure what to think of this yet… but I’m sure I’ll have something in mind when more information leaks out. In the meantime, I’m gonna go back to the old movie trilogy and track down some Next Mutation…

BOOOOOOOOO-URNS.

DVD Review: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – Turtles Forever (2009 Release)

So in 2009, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise celebrated its twenty-fifth anniversary and as such, the event was celebrated not only with a change in ownership from Mirage Studios to Viacom, but also resulted in Turtles Forever, a film that serves as a crossover between the 2003 cartoon Turtles and the much beloved cartoon Turtles from the classic 1987 cartoon. And then it was released onto DVD. Unfortunately, the DVD release is a very barebones release that only includes the film and not much else in terms of features.

The Good: The only good that could be said about the DVD is that the film itself is top-notch fanservice and a satisfying conclusion to not only the 2003 incarnation of TMNT, but in a way, also closes out an era of Turtle-dom that dates back to its origins in 1984. The 87 Turtles aren’t voiced by the original actors, but they sound close enough if not a bit too goofy. Still, it’s a fun little movie that is a celebration of what’s come before as much as it is an ending.

The Bad: The DVD itself is slim pickings; only packing the film and chapter selection. Not even captions or alternate languages. Also the film is the edited version and not the uncut version that is supposed to feature eight minutes of additional material. It’s not a bad film and without having seen the longer version, I don’t know how much I’m actually missing here… but man, what a missed opportunity to include a more complete version, even if the extra stuff might seem a bit extraneous.

Overall: Turtles Forever got a cheap-o DVD release and given what it represents, I do wish more was done to give this a better treatment. Even a trailer or two would’ve been nice. Still, having some form of Turtles Forever in a consumable format is nice to have and the DVD is pretty cheap, so if you haven’t seen this one and find the disc laying around somewhere, why not give it a shot?

Amazing Spider-Man Trailer Is Kinda… Meh.

http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=86680

So they just put out the Amazing Spider-Man trailer, the reboot of a ten-year old series that was needed because we couldn’t let Sam Raimi do the Spider-Man movies he wanted and thus we go with this somewhat uninspired take.

Looks nice, but I’m not digging this “untold story” angle that they’re going for here. Not only is the Spider-Man origin story the furthest thing from “untold story” you’re going to get, but it seems like they’re retooling it to be some sort of destiny thing as opposed to being by chance. Not to mention that I’m not a fan of the suit… but hey, they brought back the Spidey wit; something that was missing from the Sam Raimi entries.

Cautiously middle of the road on this one; looking forward to it, but not particularly impressed thus far.
