WCW Monday Nitro (Jan 15th, 1996) – And Then Public Enemy Appeared

We’ve got a rather eventful episode of Nitro this week where a couple of significant things happen going forward. And it’s actually a pretty good episode as well.

First off, the Horsemen and the Dungeon Of Doom are joining forces, with Sullivan “loaning” the Giant to Ric Flair so that they can have a tag match against Hogan and Savage at some point… presumably the upcoming Clash Of The Champions special that they used to have every so often. Worth noting is the tension between Kevin Sullivan and Brian Pillman, which I’d imagine will lead to some sort of match involving respect, if you get my drift.

The other piece of significance that took place on this episode was the WCW debut of former ECW mainstays, the Public Enemy. The Public Enemy, back in the ECW days, were badass (allegedly)… but I never witnessed those days, so we get these guys in funny orange shorts having trouble with these AMERICAN MALES! AMERICAN MALES! AMERICAN MALES! (Fuck that song.) before a roll-up wins the match for PE, who then dump the males through some tables to “get their heat back” or something. I want to say that this wasn’t a good first impression for the team, but then they’d debut in WWF years later and that wasn’t all sunshine, either. Truthfully, I never saw the appeal of these guys; they were big chunky dudes with funny shirts who tossed guys through tables. Mind you, the Dudleyz would come along and do the same thing, but those guys were far more talented and charismatic. Maybe I needed to have watched them in their Extreme prime, as it were. Maybe some day…

Other than that, you had Lex Luger beating Randy Savage via Torture Rack, though they made a point to have Savage pass out in pain rather than submit, so he’s kept strong for his title match against Flair… even though he lost to Luger. Even though Luger has a spotless record over Randy Savage. Yeah, you know what? Why isn’t Luger getting a title shot? This booking is a bit suspect.

Speaking of which, Ric Flair retains his World title over Sting via Figure Four submission after Luger – accidentally on purpose – KOs Sting in the corner. This causes Hogan and Savage for dumping on Sting for trusting Luger before Hogan – loyal friend and sportsman of the century – complains about Savage getting the title shot and not him. As a consolation prize, Hogan gets a match with Meng and wins because of course he does, brutha.

Fun show.
