Still Near Woeful

The newest trailer for the third season of Strange New Worlds hit and… yeah, most of it looks promising… until the thing with Patton Oswald shows up at the end. So close… and yet, so very far away.

More thoughts after the break, but long story short, my optimism is purely cautious at the moment.

So, never mind the opening mugshots, which look silly and not even in a cheeseball sort of way, but the middle portion of this thing looks promising, teasing a potential changing of the guard that might seem like misdirection in some form or fashion. I want to say that this almost sold me on giving the season a shot, despite knowing that half of it is going to be bullshit gimmick episodes.

Yes, one of the episodes involves a holodeck. No, I’m not opposed to this. The animated series from the 70s has established that the Enterprise had a Rec Room that served as a prototype holodeck thing. Yes, there have been some good to great holodeck episodes. No, I have no faith in these people delivering anything of the sort, especially given their first clip showcased is the stupid Vulcan that’s actually taken from the EIGHTH episode of this season.

In case you needed a reminder…

So, yeah, despite the above clip and the teaser trailer that seemed more interested in showcasing the wacky gimmicks of the season, the above trailer, which is more invested in the deeper character moments, almost sold me on the season.

And then they had Spock do the “Gimme Five” thing on Patton Oswald’s Vulcan… and this already struck twice for me. First because Patton Oswald, whom I don’t consider to be all that funny or talented. And second because we continue to make Spock seem like a bit of a moron, as if they’re doing a parody of the character that people usually associate with Star Trek. If that’s the intent – is to turn this into a Star Trek parody – then by all means, go for it, but at the very least be transparent about it.

I don’t know. I might give this a watch at some point. Despite some of the sour points, I remain somewhat optimistic… even if it’s mostly on the side of caution. At the very least, I know what I’m getting into when I watch this show.

And at the very least, it doesn’t look as bad as Section 31… which I have not watched.
