Yeah, we’re not being subtle here…
And no, we’re not talking about the last Bond film starring Daniel Craig…
Nor are we talking about some fanfiction that somehow got published and turned into a novel.
We’re talking about the latest and perhaps most permanent of death of James Bond… one that will stick for good.
By now, most of you folks are aware of the news that Amazon MGM has taken over complete creative control from the Brocollis, who have been custodians of the Bond film brand since its inception. This leaves the door open for Amazon to cast a new 007 film and run every bad idea through their checklist in an effort to fast-track a potential cinematic universe or content factory. You folks rolling your eyes over that One In A Million game show hosted by Remington Steel? Wait until you get that Moneypenny spin-off, or thar Q spin-off, or that ten other spin-offs that will all blend together and be completely forgettable.
The James Bond film series has had its ups and downs. There was some great films and there were some bad ones as well… but I’d never consider any one of them to be truly horrific films. Yes, even Die Another Day has its rare moments that makes up for the rubbish. Most of all, whenever there was a new James Bond film on the horizon, it felt like a big deal. It’s the same feeling that I once had for whenever there was a new Star Wars or Star Trek film. It was an event that was going to be hyped up and get us all excited.
Those days look to be long gone.
I have no faith in Amazon when it comes to steering this 007 ship in the right direction. I’ve seen their takes on other properties and my feelings on those can be best summed up as “the less said, the better.” I want to believe that James Bond wouldn’t be another one to toss into that category… but given who has creative control over the property, my hopes are so low, they’re practically non-existent. Isn’t it bad enough that we’re rewriting the Fleming novels to be more suitable for modern tastes? Can’t we just leave what was well enough alone?
Rest in peace, Mr. Bond. You’ve had a good running, but your time has come and gone.
