This coming Tuesday is the end of an era… so to speak.
This coming Tuesday on New Year’s Eve, thirty minutes past midnight, the DTM-Cast – this strange little audio project that has been an on-and-off thing since 2013 – will be posting its final episode. As a matter of fact, as I am writing this, I am in the process of reading my closing thoughts on the show. And it is a show that I implore you folks to listen to.
The DTM-Cast started off in 2013. At the time, I wanted to do a quick audio thing that involved no video editing. Just talk into a mic with some notes to keep things on track and move on. The initial episodes were posted on the Dailymotion video service – which proved problematic when one of the episodes were stricken for some reason that was never explained. Eventually, after a couple years, I got myself a Mediafire account and decided to upload MP3s of the show; so now you can listen to these things on your audio device of choice… you know, like a proper podcast thing.
There was a point where I had stopped doing these things before I eventually fired these up a bit. I ended up recording 255 episodes of the bloody thing within 11+ years and to say that the majority of the episodes were kinda shit is being polite. I make it a point to mention every once in a while that I don’t like listening to myself. I tolerate it for the video reviews, but I don’t care for it in audio form. When I did these on Dailymotion, there was a hard 60 minute time limit because they wouldn’t allow videos over that runtime. That meant things had to be controlled. Once you removed that limitation, you can go anywhere and everywhere for as long as you want… and maybe that’s where things go off the rails.
Having episodes lasting almost 90 minutes or even a whole TWO HOURS (God Forbid) without saying much of substance… no one knows better than I that they’re a hard listen. But at the same time, doing those shows allow me to vent on things that I wouldn’t have the energy for otherwise. Granted, “vent” is perhaps too strong a word. A lot of these are mostly done for show, but the few genuine moments tend to be lost in the broader strokes. Sometimes, there are some genuinely fun stories being told within these hallowed halls of ramblingness that I wish more people got around to hearing because those are the stories where the heart went to. Sometimes, reminiscing about the good times often make for the best stories to be told in this format… but people just want to hear me vent about things that annoy me. I wish that weren’t the case, but…
The DTM-Cast was an audio outlet that served me well, but now it’s time to move on. After 256 episodes, I bring this series to a close so I can focus on other things. After the video reviews, it remains my second-longest series and who knows if there will ever be a challenger to that Intercontinental throne. It’s been a fun ride, I’ve enjoyed putting these together as much as some of you have enjoyed enduring these things, and I’m happy to give this thing a proper send-off before it falls off the rails again.
