To Boldly… Not Be Bold

Someone appraised me of the second trailer for “To Boldly Flee” and told me to avoid it. Unfortunately, I didn’t take his advice and checked it out anyway. Now, I kinda wish I hadn’t… because I now have this sinking feeling that this thing is going to outsuck Kickassia. The trailer looks appallingly bad, with crummy special effects, a lackluster plot, and more attempts at cosplaying fail. It almost seems like Channel Awesome wants to produce films akin to the Seltzerberg features… except much more crappier.

There’s putting together a fun little flick that plays to the strengths of the entertainers in order to produce something decent and enjoyable without exposing the weaknesses. There’s putting together a quick little project that comes off as poor quality but contains enough charm and shows enough care put into the work that it can be enjoyed the same way one can enjoy a good “bad” movie. And then there’s making an overproduced, pretentious circle-jerking project whose ambitions far exceed their ability to deliver and is done only to appease the mindless droves of fanatics who care not for a decent product from the producers because “it’s not supposed to be taken seriously” and thus will gobble crap like that up like a heroin addict sniffing the good stuff. And yet when somebody criticizes this supposed holy work, they go into a fit of rage degrading that person for not liking something that was supposed to be silly and not to be taken seriously… hence, they take it seriously.

Thanks, but no thanks. I’ll wait for the potential disaster from Cinemassacre instead. At the very least, James Rolfe will show some level of competence in his upcoming feature.
