Closing in on 400 posts in less than a couple years? Wow… that’s rather interesting… The funny thing is that there were a couple things I wouldn’t mind posting thoughts on and yet I wouldn’t want to blow minor bits on a “landmark” post.
So you know what? Let’s have a Bite commentary… haven’t done one of these in a long while… so yeah…
More comments (or should that be MOAR COMMENTS! LOL!) after the break…
So I was able to watch the recent finale of Smallville, where Clark Kent apparently fulfills his destiny and becomes CGI Superman. On a whole, I thought it was alright. I mean, I’m sure people are upset and underwhelmed by the fact that the most we got out of Tom Welling was a shirt rip and some CGI shots, but I honestly wasn’t expecting much more than the shirt rip. So what I got was fairly satisfying. The show itself was alright – nothing grandioso, but it was alright. It resolved some plot points, some old faces came back, gave us some nice finality, and for his first act in the suit, Superman hurled Apokalips into the sun… simple, perfect, best way to debut a new look… and I’m sure the rest we know all too well… so yeah, I thought it was just fine.
They kept Darkseid’s appearances to a minimum and his actual interaction with Clark was admittedly lacking, but on the other hand, I really had no problem with it. I much rather have Darkseid at a minimum than having him and Clark duke it out in a big brawl. Let’s save something for Superman, shall we? I mean, the biggest issue I’ve had with this series is that Clark has already faced Zod, Bizarro, Doomsday… there’s already a Supergirl… there’s already a Superboy… and… this is all before he becomes… what’s his face? So, I’m glad they kept Darkseid in the back burner… little actual involvement… that’s fine…
I only have a couple minor complaints, though; I thought that we were long done with the ridiculous premises of tactile contact erasing peoples’ memories (Superman II’s Kiss Of Amnesia for example,) but I guess we have to take it a step further by having Tess touch Luthor so that he’d forget his entire life experience… or something. I get that this was supposed to be the big solution to giving us the Luthor more consistent with the comic book iteration and I guess there weren’t any better means outside of Clark just knocking Lex out silly… but I don’t know. I guess that worked… but I’m not really feeling that one.
The other complaint that I have and one that probably in the minority here; the insertion of John William’s original Superman theme during the final moments of the episode. Yes, I’ll admit that it’s a rather nice touch to have that playing in the background and have it close the show with the big shirt rip moment. But at the same time, I feel that it somehow doesn’t fit with the tonality or the overall atmosphere. And the music in this episode throughout, was very good, very heart-pounding, especially towards the end when we have the first flight in tights and very triumphant sounding for lack of better terms. And rather than continue onwards with this great musical tonality and concluding with a worthwhile piece during that final moment, they just pulled out the Superman soundtrack CD and played the old theme from that… call it a day.
Look, the Superman theme from John Williams is pretty much the iconic, defacto theme of Superman. You listen to that theme, you instantly associate it with Superman. That’s how powerful that piece is and it’s a great triumphant piece. That’s great, but this sudden compulsive need to put it in every single piece of Superman media for the sake of having it there… um, enough already. It’s a iconic theme, it’s nice to have when it makes sense, but at this point, the theme is getting abused more often a rape victim. Let’s leave it alone and try to come up with something that could be as good as that… because contrary to what people might think, there have been Superman media that lacked the movie theme and they turned out alright… that Lois & Clark series, the 90s Superman animated series, the various video games, the various DC Animated Movies… nobody bitched about the theme missing from those pieces.
So to the guys doing that Man of Steel movie… please don’t force that theme into your movie for the sake of having it there. Or don’t put it in at all. Make a new theme for a new era… don’t shackle yourselves to a piece that’s more than 30+ years old. It’s classic, yes, but enough already.
Sorry about that tangent, folks… but yeah, Smallville finale was alright. Not much more to say than that…
On a much more sadder note, apparently NBC has passed on the new Wonder Woman pilot that features some chick in a plastic top and pants… So I guess that means the pilot is going on iTunes? It’s sort of what happened with that Aquaman pilot from a few years back – but who knows? As far as this Wonder Woman pilot goes… eh, I’m not feeling it. From what I’ve heard and seen… it didn’t look like something that I was going to follow on a consistent basis, not to mention I wasn’t a big fan of the costume. I felt that it looked like a custom piece that you’d normally find on specialty porno shops than an actual superhero costume. Maybe if they used actual clothing materials instead of that latex stuff, but whatever…
Last week, a friend of mine had deposited to me an interesting curiosity. A Miracle-X video game system. Now, I wasn’t able to find much online information, but from what I gathered, this is a Korean video game system that plays Famicom cartridges… and not only does it play Famicom cartridges, but it also comes built in with several games. Now I had filmed some footage of the thing in action, but truth be told, I’m none too pleased with the end results. I may compile what I have into a video eventually, but I would very much like to do a proper “overview” format for this thing. Still, I don’t want to waste the footage I got, so I may compile something together and post it up on the channel.
Mind you, the footage is about a week old and my thoughts on the console have obviously changed now that I got a bit more playtime on this thing, but I’ll probably make note of that in the form of annotations or possibly a more refined “review” format. But for the most part, it’s not a bad system. Works well enough… and yeah. It’s a nice little acquisition, if nothing else.
So that’s all for today, folks. I’m presently compiling some video stuff for the month of June and I’m also working on compiling new footage for the Juan Cena storyline, so we can wrap that up. And that about does it. So thanks for reading and take care…
