Classic Bite Commentary #88 – September 1st, 2009

Welcome to another Bite commentary… and one that’s going to be fairly brief because this is less a commentary on the state of the world and the bubble of interests that serve as the background fodder for my little corner of the Interwebz or whatever we’re supposed to be calling this thing… but rather, this is going to largely focus on “the big picture” change that I’m going to be toying with.

Specifically, I’m going to be making the move over to Blogger, which is a service that is devoted almost entirely to blogging. And if I’m going to be honest with you, the service looks promising. Minimal on-screen ads to kill the mood, the tools behind the scenes make the blogging experience a much more pleasant one compared to the Tripod version, and it seems like it might get a little more visibility. Who knows… if this works out really well, I may very well plant my flag there for the foreseeable future.

There’s a couple reasons behind this decision and the first is going to be pretty obvious. Blogging takes less effort and less time to get words online. The service takes care of the hard layout stuff while I just move a couple things around. It might not be a full-blown website or anything like that and things are going to be far less flexible going forward, but I’d imagine that the deeper I dig into this, the more that I can get out of this. It also helps that if I want to comment on something, I can go online and do so without having to go through the process of uploading the page to a server or whatever the case may be.

Don’t get me wrong; I enjoy fiddling around with HTML, Frontpage, and the occasional Dreamweaver for my website creation follies. I get a kick out of designing these little sites; which explains why the Webstation undergoes more changes in format than any other website should go through in half a decade. But there is also the reality that as soon as I set these wonderful pieces of work on line, they’re going to be saddled with ad banners because I’m on a free service. That’s the sacrifice you need to make if you want to take advantage of free hosting, but it also discourages me from going too deep into the web creation aspect of things.

There is another aspect to this that I might have teased a couple times, but haven’t mentioned straight up… and that is the possibility to engaging in the wonderful world of video creation. I’ve got a Youtube account that I started a few years ago to view some adult-oriented entertainment and I’ve been dabbling with some video editing software for a while. Youtube has an option to embed videos to other sites or blogs, but trying to do with the current set-up is more trouble than it’s worth… but with the Blogger set-up, it’ll be much, MUCH easier.

I don’t mind the work if it pays off, but if cutting the extraneous bullshit means an easier time getting stuff up here on a regular basis, then I’m all for it. Not to mention… it’d be nice to have a site that DOESN’T go under the knife every few months just because I want to change the layout. Now the process will be much, MUCH quicker as a result.

Anyway, that’s the story behind the move. Right now, DTM Blog and whatever version of the Webstation ends up being active (whenever it’s active that is – despite my misgivings, the work continues because I’m a glutton for misery, it would seem) is still the main thing while the Blogger space (name undetermined) is another experiment… but if it works out… well, I’m not opposed to moving everything there.

That’s it for me. I’m off to bed.

Later,
Dave
