Welcome to the Weekly Round-Up. We talk Euro 2004, RAW, and some comic stuff. Let’s get into it.
F’n Greece (Euro 2004 Finals)
Greece is the new European champions, beating Portugal 1-0 with another one of their fluke headbutt goals and their half-assed defense strategy. This ain’t no Cinderella team, folks. This is a team that’s had a horseshoe stuck so far up their ass it’s unbelievable.
Hey, you know what? Good for Greece; they won the cup, but they sure as hell didn’t deserve it.
Eugene’s RAW (5-July-2004)
I’d go out on a limb and boldly declare that [mentally challenged people] can’t book wrestling cards, but I thought it would slanderous. Then I thought “Oh wait, Bradshaw’s the world champ” and decide that [mentally challenged people] can’t book a GOOD show for their own good. I’m not saying this to be insulting. I’m saying this because Vince has no fucking clue.
That said, that musical chairs bit was funny as all hell.
Rob Siebert’s Forever Red Fanfic
Let me tell you what I think of Forever Red.
Rob Siebert’s Forever Red fanfic is an adaptation of the Wild Force episode of the same name, with a shitload of material added and changed around to make it a more enthralling read. Most people herald it as the greatest fanfic written in the fandom to this day. I beg to differ.
And right now, I can hear the predators a-calling.
While it is an excellent overview of the episode, when you get past all the added material and enhanced characterizations, that’s all it really is; an episode adaptation. And while I don’t doubt that it could have stood on its own, I can’t help but find the story somewhat predictable (no shit you’re going to add a zord fight; that’s a no-brainer reading the early chapters), although killing off Aurico was quite a surprise, even though he wasn’t much of a major player to begin with.
I’ve always been under the impression that fanfiction refered to original works based on an intellectual property written by the fans. Forever Red isn’t fanfiction; bear with me. It’s written by a fan, yes, but I don’t call it a fanfic because the story of which is the basis of already exists; the fan merely changes it around to fit his personal vision. It’s called a fan adaptation or a fan revision.
On that note, it is one of the best episode adaptations by a fan conceived, but in my eyes, it can’t be considered great fanfiction. Because the fan is merely augmenting the story told.
“What about heavy revisions and What-If scenarios that drastically change the source dynamic?” says a predator. “Do you consider that fanfiction?”
Sure, because the story is being created anew by the fan.
Random Comics Stuff
JLA 100. The so-called lead-in to the new JLE (Elite) miniseries isn’t all that great. The JLA look like morons, the Elite don’t seem too impressive, and the whole story seemed to be difficult to follow. If this is what’s expected of future JLA issues from this team, I want out.
Why are the X-Men reloaded? Why did they need to be reloaded when stuff was looking good? Why is whenever something good gets reloaded, it ends up being crap? (Hey Matrix Reloaded, I’m talking to YOU!)
That’s it, later.
