Classic Bite Commentary #03 – July 14th, 2002

(2013 Update: Yeah, the first few Bite commentaries had the same generic introduction going. So for the sake of space conservation, I’m going to forgo reposting the same crappy opener over and over again until it changes down the line. So without further ado, let’s get this thing going.)

First time viewing japanese Power Rangers
Just this past week, a friend of mine came back from Japan and brought some souvenirs, including some old Sentai tapes. For those who don’t know, Sentai is a group of series which consist of five (usually) heroes in colorful costumes fighting rubber monsters in their giant mechas. In other words, it’s the stuff where most of the Power Rangers fight scenes come from. He managed to secure a couple of Zyuranger tapes and a copy of GaoRanger vs. Super Sentai. Surely enough, I borrowed his tapes and watched the stuff. Boy I liked what I saw. It’s the route Saban should have taken with Power Rangers but didn’t. It’s a shame the domestic market will never see the light of Sentai, because it is truly some of the best stuff I have seen.

(2013 Update: I haven’t touched a single bit of Super Sentai since this posting, other than some samplings on YouTube. Fortunately, Power Rangers was so dedicated to copying the source Sentai verbatim that it ended up being unnecessary in the long run… Wait, how is that fortunate?)

The Rock Returns… The Same Old Funny Guy
This past week on Smackdown, The Rock returned after returning to King of the Ring only to get his ass handed to him by Undertaker. In general, the Rock screwed with Hogan, Kurt Angle, and Mark Lloyd (to quote the Rock, WHO IN THE BLUEST OF BLUE HELLS IS MARK LLOYD?!), as well as gave a couple of Rock Bottoms for the sake of being on television when he should be gambling his newfound fame away in Atlantic City.

(2013 Update: Rocky’s doing just fine, 2002 Dave. Just you wait…)

Konami Collector Set: Castlevania & Contra
I hear Konami is going to release a Collector Set consisting of Castlevania, Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest, Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse, Contra, and Super C. That would be a great compilation for anyone who has… oh yeah, the compilation is going to be on PC. So far, I’ve only seen this on EBGames.com and am not certain if any other store will have this package. Though I would like to see Dracula X ported over, this is a start. Is it worth it to anyone to buy the set even though they have the old cartridges or even though they can play the games through emulation? Probably not, but if your old set is gone or you feel like being legal, you should buy it. Who knows? If something like this works out, we might get more of these compilations.

(LAST MINUTE UPDATE: This collector’s set has a page on the Konami Hawaii page – don’t ask. Click here)

Hogan. Hogan. Hulk Hate Hogan!
Dave: Hulk, what’s the matter?
Hulk: Hulk mad because puny Hogan won tag belt with puny Edge!
Dave: Wow, Hulk. That’s real devastating.
Hulk: Hulk don’t like puny fake Hulk! Hulk SMASH Hogan!
Dave: Hey man. It’s not like Hogan won the World Belt.
Hulk: Hulk don’t care. Hogan still win belt. Hulk HATE Hogan!

Vince, get the belt off Hogan… NOW!

(2013 Update: On an episode of Smackdown, Hollywood Hulk Hogan and Edge won the Tag Titles for a cup of coffee before losing them back at the following PPV event. I can’t remember what it’s called.)

Michael Myers strikes again… and again… and again…
Went to see Halloween Resurrection last night. I was surprised by the quality of the film. It wasn’t some cheesy, poorly-conceived sequel. It was good. It was certainly better than Jason X. Hell, it was better than “Jason Goes To Hell: The Final Friday” and opens the door for a potential sequel… ’cause, you know, there’s gonna be one.

(2013 Update: Haven’t seen the movie in ages. So I don’t know how well it holds up today.)

Not much happened in the past two weeks, so that’s all I can come up with. Then again, a headache and the knowledge that Hulk Hogan is a champion in WWE will do that to you. Have fun folks. See you next week…
